All from The Courier, unless noted otherwise. 1 - "Bus v Tram" - 10-2-1962 - letter - from M Stewart of Sydney, say that the move to buses as in Sydney should not be allowed to happen. 2 - "Tram Facts" - 13-2-62 - letter - about the need for a private operator to run at a profit, higher fares - a public authority would maintain concession fares. 3 - "On the Lines" - 13-2-62 - letter - supporting the trammies. 4 - "Bendigo Meeting Moves to Retain Trams" - 12-3-62 - reporting on a meeting of 11-2-62- in Bendigo, well attended. Historically significant for at the time it demonstrated aspects of the evolution of Ballarat Tramways and yields information about the formation of the tramways, the Councils viewpoint and has a strong association with the Mayor of the time.Twenty two page book, produced by photocopying, side stapled and bound with a red plastic binding, titled "Mayor's Special Report Ballarat Tramways", dated 20 September 1971 for presentation to the City of Ballaarat Council Meeting 27 Sept. 1971 and signed by the Mayor, J.A.Chisholm. Note pages 18 and 19 have been reversed. Comprises: Page 1 - map (image 1829i1) - of Ballarat (Ballaarat) showing the horse tram routes in red (appear to have been drawn in with a red pencil). Set of A4 photocopies of 6 years of half yearly reports of The Ballaarat Tramway Company Limited (Horse Trams) from 3/1897 to 9/1902. All reports except the last one comprise a two sheet printed or typeset report giving notice of meeting, directors report, statement of assets and liabilities, share structure and profit and loss account. The last report 9/1902 is typed, and lists assets and credits only on the profit and loss account. Meetings were held at Craig's Hotel, Lydiard St. The Directors report from 9/1900 note the forthcoming sale of the company to the British Insulated Wire Company Limited and the problems of finalising the sale. Yields information about the threats to the Geelong tram system in 1949 and ways that it could be upgraded and extended to continue to serve. Was the first of the SEC systems to close. Has a strong association with the AETA members.A 20 page report + index + cover sheet + drawing foolscap size + estimate - corner stapled. Examining rail, tram and bus services to mainly North Geelong area. Drawing of PCC car- possibly a proposed MMTB car - 45' long. Looks at comparative costs, provision of rolling stock, recommendations for improvement, a comparison between buses and trams and the style of an operating authority other than the SEC. Follows on from the Mr. Hector Bell Jnr's report and comments on his report. Award, Mental Hospitals Ladies Golf Competition, Commemorative Shield, 1930-1932
An Article in The Herald (18 Feb 1931) records that: "FAIRVIEW OFFICIALS - AT the annual meeting of the Associates of the Fairview Golf Club the following office bearers were elected: President, Miss A, Simcocks; secretary, Miss B. Williamson; captain, Miss A. Shiells; committee, Misses Tresise, Walters, Brown and McLachlan. The captain reported that the shield presented by Mr and Mrs Bourne for competition among the clubs associated with the metropolitan mental hospitals had been won by Fairview associates, who will hold it for one year."The trophy has historical significance as an item associated with the Melbourne Mental Hospital in the 1930s and also of social significance in that it relates to recreational pursuits undertaken by staff of the Hospital.Wood and silver plate shield won by the ladies team of Fairview Golf Club in the years 1930, 1931 and 1932. The Golf Club was established in 1928, and was owned and managed as part of the Kew Mental Hospital. The 9-hole golf course was located next to the Chandler Highway and is currently the site of the headquarters of Guide Dogs Victoria. The earliest item dates from 1964, and is a letter from W. D. Birrell, Town Clerk to the Secretary of the Historical Society. The file also includes a National Trust of Victoria listing of classified buildings as of 1981. The most interesting documents in the file are the City of Kew Heritage Advice Note 1-4, compiled in 1991 and which provides advice on Protecting Heritage through Planning, Victorian Buildings, Edwardian Buildings, and 1930s-1940s houses. This child's crinoline skirt was donated in 1974 by Mrs Ella Kohn of Were Street, a life member of the Society. According to then-BHS Secretary Rosalind Landells, the skirt was originally made the fit a girl aged 10-12, but had been modified to add length. Mrs Landells reported that Society members had restored the skirt to the original length and that it would be worn at a costume parade at the Southern Cross on 27 March 1974 by Carolyn Scott.Pale yellow silk half-hoop skirt with cotton lining. Functional object - Object, Stainsby braille writer, 1930-1940's
Henry Stainsby (1859-1925), Supt. of the Birmingham Royal Institution for the Blind, (later General Secretary of the British & Foreign Blind Association) along with Birmingham manufacturer Albert Wayne, introduced their Shorthand Braille Writer, circa 1910-1940. Used at the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind. These machines were often supplied with a case, to deaden the sound when in use. The machine was designed to take down verbatim reports from dictation. As the strip of paper passes automatically through the machine, no time is needed to adjust the paper or the machine for each line. Speeds of 80 - 140 words per minute can be obtained.Contained in a dark blue case which folds down to reveal the keys, this portable Braille writer has six flat keys in front and a space key, attached to a marking device at the back. A roll of thin white paper is mounted on an attachment to the side of the machine, and the paper is threaded along a channel at the top of the machine and comes out the other side in a continuous roll. These minutes include Present, Apologies, Correspondence, Registrations, Reports and Interviews with workers. 16/12/1938 it was noted the Secretary created a brochure called 'Social Justice for the Blind' and other publications for promotion of the organisation. It was also reported re the Institutions decision to pay Christmas pay on the basis of Married pensioners, £3-7-6, Married non-pensioners £4-7-6 per week and single men £2-2-6 per week. The child allowance has been discontinued.
