Cast Iron lace was made in foundries in most cities. There were 42 such foundries in Melbourne alone. It was cheaper to make than wrought iron. "Pig iron", iron ore, was melted in a blast furnace, mixed with alloys and then poured into moulds usually made of sand. Morshead's was a popular department store in the 1950s and 1960s. In this night exposure the famous window displays can be clearly seen. Also at the extreme right of the photograph the verandah over 'the bridge' can be seen - the creek is covered over making an arcade. Also the verandah posts which were all removed in the 1960s and cantilevered verandahs installed throughout Ballarat. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. In 1979, a series of photographs of significant gardens in Kew (Victoria) were taken during a tour by Peter Watts, of National Trust Victoria. These were later purchased to add to the collection. In the case of each photo the colour had badly degraded over time. On 18th June 1853 the 839 ton ship 'Earl of Charlemont' was wrecked near Barwon Heads. Her 450 passengers and crew struggled ashore without loss of life. Among them were John and Anne Morton, their 3 sons and 5 daughters. Before leaving Ireland, their eldest son George Pickering Morton, had married Anne Eliza Burrowes. Their son, Thomas Richard Burrowes Morton, born in Melbourne on 12 March 1854, was usually known as ' T.R.B.' Aged 26 he married Louisa Mary Esther Morgan. In 1909 Louisa Morton had a cottage built at Points Lonsdale and named it 'Dorrington', surname of her Welsh Grandmother. During previous holidays the family stayed at the 'Terminus'.
