Book, Moyle, Col (Sketchy), Indebted: From a Quaker schoolboy to an Australian SAS Soldier, 2017
Indebted is not your usual military autobiography. 'Sketchy's' easy-to-read memoir is both humorous and thought-provoking. It gives a unique insight into jungle warfare during the Vietnam conflict and training and culture in the Australian Army, particularly the Special Air Service. It is a powerful book that will be of interest to both service and non-service personnel.Indebted is not your usual military autobiography. Book, George, Alexander,Hall, David, The Limits of Coercive Diplomacy
Coercive diplomacy is a beguiling, strategy, a subtle mixture of military pressures and diplomatic concessions. It is often erroneously thought to be a low risk strategy which military strong powers can employ to impose their will upon weaker opponents. Actually, however, this strategy can succeed only under special conditions, such as were present in 1962 when President Kennedy induced Khrushchev to remove Soviet missiles from Cuba. When special conditions of urgency, motivation and timing are not present, as in 1965 when President Johnson initiated bombing of North Vietnam, an effort to employ coercive diplomacy may easily lead to ruinous involvement.Coercive diplomacy is a beguiling, strategy, a subtle mixture of military pressures and diplomatic concessions. The war in Vietnam was cruel and costly in every sense, as indeed all wars are! However the nature of this was was not so markedly different from any other armed conflict in which Australian troops had been involved - certainly not to a degree that would justify the creation of a special purpose single interest museum, which is the case of the National Vietnam Veterans Museum - so why does this particular museum exist? The war in Vietnam was cruel and costly in every sense, as indeed all wars are!
