This pavilion is a major feature of the Ballarat Botanic Gardens and is unique in Victoria and possibly Australia.Previously unknown image of Ballarat. The set and its subjects indicate these images were produced to promote Ballarat and were perhaps aimed at tourists.The Statuary Pavilion, erected in 1887, houses classically derived sculptures donated to the city by Mr James Russell Thompson. Series of letters between Frank Shennen, Managing Editor of the Transportation Magazine of Sydney and Lewis Russell regarding cable trams. This information may have formed the basis of an article, "Salute to the Cable Tram" that appeared in the July 1948 issue of Truck and Bus Transportation - see Reg Item 2578. The inscription on the back of the photograph indicates that it is of Chris Stratton, his brother Bill and his mother. This is most likely Christopher John Stratton, 1862-1906. His mother Johanna (née Bentley), widowed in 1863, married Archibald Ferguson shortly afterwards, and the "brother" is likely to be Archibald's and Johanna's son William John Ferguson, born 1866. May's note on the back of the photo identifies the children as "Ida" (Ida Hyatt, May's daughter) and "Mollie Norris".
