A group of widows gathered at Legacy House doing needlework and craft. It is Marion Scammell (see also article in the Answer 1996 at 00889). This photo was published in The Answer in January 1997. Shows one of many activities that the widows were involved in. There were weekly workshops for craft and others for painting. The tapestry instructor was Nancy Crooks. The timetable for activities was published in The Answer each month. These regular meetings and workshops provided important opportunities for widows to meet and be active.A record of the type of activities Legacy provided as a social outlet for widows. Sign, "Ballarat Tramways Alteration to Time-Table", Mar. 1970
Paper sign titled "Ballarat Tramways Alteration to Time-Table" dated 16/3/1970 that has been mounted with a Perspex front onto a manufactured wooden board with a blackened edge and secured with steel mounting clips and a hanging bracket. Used to exhibit or show a SEC timetable alteration announcement or sign that from the given date, a new timetable would apply from that date for Week days and Saturdays. Signed by F.K. White, Manager and printed by Alex King & Sons Ballarat. Original sign is understood to be slightly larger than that mounted on the object. Mounting or securing clips on rear of the object are stamped "Swiss Made PAT" and the hanging bracket "EMO Swiss". 2nd copy of poster added 1/11/2005 - stored in box 01-01-01 - relocated to package with others. Has a strong association with tram crews and the rosters crew workings, possibly inspector (Dave Kellett?) in Ballarat. Prepared by crews from sheets to enable them to know what service times to run, meal times, details of crew changes etc, based on their allocated shift or run from the roster.Twenty two (22) page notebook with white card board covers with a drawing of boy and birds on the front cover and the Eiffel tower on the rear, spiral bound by a red covered wire. The front cover drawing has been overprinted in colour. Headed on the top of the cover is "SATURDAYS ROSTERS" in black ink. Each sheet faint ruled, both sides, with some additional pages fixed in. Has the hand written details of each SEC Ballarat runs, Saturdays runs, - giving sign on times, notes, timetables, which run taken or taken by, meal times, notes with regard to special instructions, finish times notes with corrections and changes. Includes Motormen and Conductors Runs. Image 1 shows covers and image 2, one of the sheets with the runs printed on both side of the page. A photo of widows in Legacy House sorting stamps. The names are unknown. The date is presumed to be late 1990s. The widows clubs have sorted used stamps and sold to a stamp dealer for many years to the present day. It raises funds and provides a purpose for gathering together. The timetable for activities was published in The Answer (prior to Sept 1992 it was called the Melbourne Legacy Widows' Newsletter) each month. Overview of Legacy’s involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme launched in 1980 by Ken Green Legatee. Includes a summary of aims, activities and organisation as compiled by the Outdoor Activities Committee. There was a program to send young legatees on trips on the Alma Doepel through the 1980s and 90s. The articles from the Answer show timetables and criteria for nomination of junior legatees to be selected on the trips. Provides information on each route, summary timetables, who operated the route and places of interest. Published by the Ministry of Transport in conjunction with the Transport Regulation Board, Bus Proprietors Association and VicRail. By comparison with the posters issued at the time of tram closure, can see the changes made to the routes in each city. Significant in being a poster distributed by the SEC in Ballarat to advise passengers of the new timetable to apply from March 1970, reduction in services prior to closure, due to reducing crew numbers and to save money.Foolscap Sheet, glossy one side only, titled "Alteration to Fares", under the SEC and "Ballarat Tramways" heading. The Kew railway was opened in 1887, and diverged from the main (Box Hill–Lilydale) line about half-way between Hawthorn and Glenferrie. From the point of divergence the line was slightly less than one mile long, and it had only one intermediate station — Barker. There were four road over-bridges and two level crossings, including one over the busy Barkers Road. The line supported a passenger and goods service, and was electrified in December 1922, at the same time as the main line to Box Hill. There were a number of peak hour services which ran from Flinders Street station (Melbourne) to Kew, but in 1938 all but one of these were diverted to the Ashburton line, where traffic was growing. This had an adverse effect on Kew traffic, as passengers from Kew needed to cross over a footbridge at Hawthorn to change trains, and the main line trains were usually already crowded by the time they reached Hawthorn. At about the same time the off-peak trains were replaced by road buses. In 1952 all passenger trains were withdrawn, but the road bus service continued for many years. Goods trains were finally withdrawn in 1957, and the railway was dismantled in 1958-59. Ephemera - Badge, Australian Gifts, "V 1929 - 2009", 2009
Produced by Camberwell depot staff to mark the 80th anniversary of the depot - 1929 to 2009. Has the letter of the depot printed on the front of the depot. Metal badge has the name of the depot as well as "V" and "80". On the inside of the card explains the basis of the depots timetable or run number letter V, because it was located in the Vee formed by Riversdale and Camberwell Roads. The second card notes that the depot is not in Camberwell but Hawthorn East and that there are no numbers on the rear wall after a tram crashed through it in the early 1970s.
