Yields information about an accident or collision between a tramcar and a vehicle late 1930's. Gives information about the damage to the tramcar and livery detailsSet of four Black and white photo prints from collected negative of Ballarat (SEC) No. 27 photographed in the depot yard after a collision with motor vehicle or possibly another tram, as the damage is at the roof line, where the two trams tend to hit before hitting at the bumper bar level. Covers the history of the horse trams, the electrification by the Electric Supply Co. of Victoria, (ESCo) the takeover by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), closure in 1971, the formation of the BTPS and the operation of the tramway. Photo used in Keith Kings book, "The Ballarat Tramways" on page 28. Understood to be an ESCo photograph. Tram has "Suttons for Gramophones" roof advertisement, words "Ballarat Tramways" on the top rail above windows and "Coliseum Photoplays"in central window. Two of the four side blinds are in the down position, probably done to show their presence. Tram has a "bulls-eye" type destination indicator. Photographed outside the depot with Lake Wendouree in the background. Photograph is a photo of another print, with the words? "Original Rolling Stock" underneath the original print and the black ink "12" in the bottom left hand corner on the newer print. 1708.1 - as above, but without the "12" written on the photograph. Tram has "Dewar's imperial whisky" roof advertisement, "Bendigo Tramways" on the letterboard, on the front dash, advertisements for "O-T+ drink additive on either side of the headlight and "Silverline Soap" on the panel either side of the bumper bar. Functional Object - Tramcar component, Duncan and Fraser, Duncan and Fraser, Window lifter, 1887
Made by Duncan and Fraser for fitting to horse-drawn tramcars and possibly other products of their Adelaide workshops. See 565 and 8744 for other examples.Demonstrates Duncan and Fraser's workshop practice of putting their name on some fittings.Duncan and Fraser, Adelaide SA window lifter or bracket to enable a horse tram window to be lifted in the window frame. Cast brass, about 40mm in diameter with a right angle lug to enable a person to lift the window. Words "Duncan & Fraser" cast around the outside of the device and the words "Adelaide S.A." cast into the centre. Has been drilled with three countersunk holes. Has brown paint on the lifting portion. On the rear, possibly the letters "5L", scratched into the metal. If this is the case, could have indicated the fifth left hand window as an identification of location. Given to the BTM 1995 by Doug Prosser, of the TMSV, said to be from Ballarat Horse Tram No. 1 horse trams, duncan & fraser, window furniture, tramcar component, tramcars, tramways -

Functional Object - Tramcar component, Duncan and Fraser, 1887?
Bell portion of a tramcar conductor's bell. Approximately. 100mm diameter, about 35mm deep with a raised or bossed hole at the top 4.5mm at the top. Bell possibly cast or pressed brass, appears to have been damaged or repaired due to excess brass in portion of the bell and on the underside where signs of brass welding are apparent. If from a horse tram, would have most likely been made by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide SA. Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, dated Thursday 6/8/1971, titled "Council to count cost of saving some trams". Item reports on the request by the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society (BTPS) to approve in principle, the operation of a working tramway museum in the Gardens Reserve and the use of Wendouree Parade. Notes which tramcars had been allocated to the BTPS by the SEC. Report from the tourism committee, Cr. J. A. Chisholm. Also noted work by Mr. Tom Evans MLA in Securing the SEC depot for temporary storage of the trams. One of large group of newspaper cuttings from John Bainbridge, 7/4/02. Lettered in blue ball point pen and underlined in red. 2225.2 - Section titled "Single Tramcar' (Single truck trams) and detailing the use, number and where the tram was taken to, or disposed to from Ballarat following closure. Lists 16 tramcars. Trams 31 and 32 were shown as SEC Creswick Road. 31 - later to (Kaniva > Haddon > USA). Lettered in blue ink or pencil with red lining. 32 - Maryborough, then to BTM Collection. 2225.3 - Section titled "Bogie Tramcar' and detailing the use, number and where the tram was taken to, or disposed to from Ballarat following closure. Lists 10 tramcars. Lettered in blue ink or pencil with red lining. Note a number of the bogie trams have since relocated since the list was prepared. Book finished with red tinted edging. Book published by The Electrical Review Limited, London in 1920, 8th edition. On inside end paper, has ESCo Ballarat office stamp with date 30/9/1924, a glued in white sheet of paper with handwritten notation "To be returned to Mr. P. Bath Motorman No. 51, City Office 9.1.63" and on bottom left hand corner a "Tait Book Co. 90 William St. Melbourne" label that has also been glued in. Provides notes on the artists, their thoughts on the projects and details of the project. Sponsored by the Victorian Ministry for the Arts and Ministry of Transport. Specification document comprising printed cover, eight typewritten pages (black carbon copy) and two photo pages of a J.G. Brill Co. of Philadelphia PA, Birney Safety Car. Specification No. 100, revised 1/10/1919. On the printed cover, which has three holes for a clip on the left hand side, printed with the Birney Safety Car trade mark, the names of the J. G. Brill associated companies (American Car Company of St. Louis, G. C. Kuhlman Car Co. of Cleveland Ohio, and Wason Manufacturing Company of Springfield, Massachusetts). On the inside of the front cover and on the outer back cover is the Brill logo. On the inside of the back cover is a floor / seating plan of the Birney Safety Car, giving overall dimensions, location of equipment etc. Item secured with one brass clip in the top left hand corner. The eight typed pages details the specification of the construction of the tramcar, equipment details etc for a single truck, double end Birney Safety (tram) car.
