Late WWI German gas mask tinThis item was used by German soldiers to house and carry gas masks to protect them against chemical weapons during WW1Late First World War German field grey carry tin for gas mask. One tan cotton strap for wearing over the wearers shoulder. Shorter tan cotton strap with button hole to attach to wearers belt. It is not sure which of the two Dowseys from Bendigo it is. The two are; David DOWSEY No 2133 enlisted in the AIF in 6th reinforcements 14th Batt on 21.5.1915 age 34 years 11 months. Embarked for Egypt 17.6.1915, embark for Gallipoli 1.8.1915, hospital with sore feet 11.10.1915, rejoin unit 21.10.1915, WIA 26.11.1915 GSW to Arm, during recovery gets himself into a bit of trouble, hospital 8.3.1916 with Influenza, rejoin unit 10.3.1916, hospital again two days later with Influenza and then classed Rhuematism, returns to Australia 11.5.1916 classed Chronic Rhuematism. Edward DOWSEY No 5526 enlisted in the AIF in October 1916 Tunnelling Coy reinforcements on 13.3.1916 age 29 years 1 month. Embark for England 25.10.1916, embark for France 4.6.1917 and attached to the 1st Tunnelling Coy, WIA 15.2.1918 GSW to Left shoulder, returns to Australia for discharge 11.12.1918 and discharged on 1.3.1919.Brown, wooden frame with white inner edge, glass front with brown cardboard backing. The ribbons belonged to Jack Grinton No 1043, 38th Batt AIF. Part of the Grinton collection which included hundreds of negatives and developed photos taken by Jack Grinton during WW1. As theses shoes are from Turkey and from the period of the early 1900s they may have been bought back from that country as a souvenir after WWI. Members of the Barton family went to WWI . Manufacture of slippers circa 1920s and represents early Turkish style .These slippers are considered rare due to the intricate workmanship in leather. They have historical and good Provence significance due to being donated by a local man who possibly bought them back from WWI . Two brown slippers, left and right foot. Leather soles and gold patterned (circle and fish like) embroidered uppers. A long, 13cm leather strip upward curled, extension fastened at tip of sole.
