Photograph - Mylon's Reo Gas-powered bus, 1940s
This 1941 Reo bus was owned by the Mylon Bus Company in Wodonga. The gas bag was used for fuel to compensate for the shortage of petrol during World War II. The Reo, powered by gas, could run 40 miles on 1,100 cubic feet. Albury and Wodonga Councils pruned back the trees so the bus could pull into the kerbs without tearing the gas bag, and the Albury Council put in a special gas pipeline to the corner of David Street where the bag could be refilled. Street lights could also cause a problem for the bag's safety. The driver in this image is Alf Jackson pictured with the Mylon boys, Phillip, David and Bernie. In 1906 Patrick Mylon started a passenger transport service in the Albury-Wodonga border area with horses and cabs. His son Jack went into business in the late 1920s, and his grandson Bernie joined the firm early in 1970. When Patrick started with the horses and cabs, each cab carried eight passengers and he always had two horses per cab. As the business expanded, Mylons used a range of buses and coaches including Reo, Chev and Bedford vehicles. During more than 100 years of service to the Wodonga region and beyond, Mylon Motorways received many awards for Excellence and Tourism. On 2nd July 2008 the company, including its 31 buses and 45 staff members, were transferred to the Dyson Group. This image is significant because it captures innovations made to cope with fuel scarcity during World War II and represents an important Wodonga business.A black and white image of a Reo gas-powered bus owned by Mylon Bus Lines Wodonga. Orbost & District Historical Society
black and white photograph, late 19th century - early 20th century
This is a photograph of Alice Swallow's hotel at Cabbage Tree. The settlement of Cabbage Tree Creek is located on the Princes Highway, 27 km east of Orbost in East Gippsland. The first white settler arrived in the valley in 1887 cutting a dray track from Marlo to the south-west. Several families cleared the alluvial flats, growing maize, peas and beans and raising pigs, cattle and sheep. Later the farmers milked cows, sending cream to Orbost. In the late 1890s, small quantities of alluvial gold were found in the creek. A school commenced classes in 1913, but enrolment was small and at times the school operated part time with several other small schools in the area. The school building served as a hall for the district. From the 1920s the Cabbage Tree Hotel catered to drivers on the improved Princes Highway. (info. from Victorian Places)This is a pictorial record of Cabbage Tree, East Gippsland in the late 20th century. It shows a building that no longer exists.A black / white photograph of a small, single - storey wooden building in a bush setting. There are people standing in front of the building with a horse and wagon nearby. In the foreground is a wagon with four horses hitched to it and the driver seated behind the horses. -

Tait collection: item 40 of 62 This document gives the details of the Will and Probate of Edward Jones, an engine driver who died in Warrnambool in January 1895 at the age of 69. He had previously been a resident of Port Fairy. He left real estate to the value of £640 and personal estate to the value of £187. The beneficiaries of the will were his daughters, Margaret and Mary Jones. The lawyers connected with this document were Ernest Chambers and the legal firm of Fletcher and Mackay. Ernest Chambers had legal offices in Port Fairy, Koroit and Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century and the signatures of two of his law clerks, Thomas Goodall and John White are included in this document. James Fletcher had a legal office in Port Fairy and in Warrnambool in the 1870s and in Warrnambool in the 1880s (Koroit Street). In the late 1890s he commenced a partnership with George Mackay who had previously had his own practice in Warrnambool.
