Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. MELBA THEATRE, WODONGA operated in the Shire Hall building on the corner of High Street and Melbourne Road (Elgin Street), Wodonga. The Shire Hall was built in 1890. The date on the facade of the building represents the date of the formation of the Shire in 1876. In December 1929, Enterprise Pictures were screening films in the open air theatre adjacent to the Shire Hall or sometimes in the hall itself. In 1943 “Melba Theatre, Shire Hall” was advertised with that name for the first time. In 1948 Mr K Bounader, a picture proprietor from Holbrook with 39 years in pictures behind him assumed control of the Melba Theatre, Wodonga. The Bounader family continued to run the theatre well into the 1960s. The hall was also used for functions such as school socials and concerts. Competition from drive-in theatres and television had an impact on theatre audiences. Finally, the Melba Theatre screened its last film in 1968. A school speech night in 1969 is the last known event in the Melba Theatre. Wodonga Shire was created in 1876 when the colonial government agreed to ratepayers' petitions to have their part of the local government district severed from the Yackandandah Shire to form a new municipality. After meeting for 14 years in rented premises, in the Prince of Wales Hall, Wodonga Council built its first Shire Hall on the corner of High and Elgin Streets in 1890. In January 1877, a contract was let to add the brick building to the existing structure. This court house opened in June 1877. This gabled court house was designed by architect Peter Kerr and was constructed at a cost of £1,325. It served as the court house until it was replaced in 1920. It was then used as a private residence for many years. THE WODONGA POWDER MAGAZINE was built by Edward Hope in 1877-78 to the order of the Ministry of Trade and Customs. It was built of brick and contains a brick arched ceiling vault to absorb any explosion The Wodonga Powder Magazine stored explosives for use in deep lead gold mining and public works in the district. The original construction cost £330.05.6. WODONGA'S SECOND POLICE STATION - This building was located on the west side of High Street near the railway line at the corner of High Street and Bond Street. The building in the background was the Bond Store which was later repurposed to become the Court House. This Police Station, which began operation on this site c1905, had originally been the house of the customs officer. It had a front office and a Sergeant's and an Inspector's office as well as 2 barrack rooms and a laundry at the rear. In the backyard was a blue stone cell block and a night soil toilet, as well as a stable used previously for horse and carriage. Opposite the police station was a boarding house which supplied meals to prisoners. WODONGA'S SECOND COURTHOUSE The Court House was situated in the Customs or Bond Store building alongside the Wodonga Police Station in 93 High Street. This was on the west side of High Street at its intersection with Bond Street. The building was converted to the courthouse in 1920. In early 1964, the courthouse building was burnt beyond repair and furniture and other property destroyed. The cause of the fire was never found. The Police Station was lucky to survive but only because of the efforts of the local Fire Brigade. After the fire, the court was held first at the old Fire Station premises near where the present Wodonga Post Office, then it moved to a vacant building in Mitchell Street which was later turned into a Child Care Centre. The Court House had to be relocated after the earlier building had been destroyed by a fire in 1964. In 1966, the new Wodonga Police Station was built but lay empty and idle for about three months. The reason given was that no furniture was available. After this situation was remedied the station was opened on December 23, 1966. The previous police station was vacated and pulled down. The new station was built in front of the new court house, which had been operating for approximately 12 months. The Police and Court House continued to operate on this site until they were again relocated in 2002. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection, including a series of photos of buildings in High Street (formerly Sydney Road), Wodonga. The CWA Hall officially opened in 1938 having been built on land granted by the Wodonga Council. Wodonga Infant Welfare Centre also occupied part of the building until 1959. Last meeting of the CWA in that hall was in held in December 1983, with the Council resuming ownership of the land to build the current day Post Office. Country Fire Brigade’s new fire station opened in High Street on 31st March 1940. The building comprised an appliance room for housing the fire engine and plant. The floor had been especially treated to enable dancing when the occasion warranted. There was a meeting room, a station-keeper’s bedroom and a repair shop. A shower room and modern kitchen were also included. The Fire station relocated to Smythe and Stanley Street corner which opened in 1977. Mate opened his first store in Albury in 1850. The company was sold to Burns Philp in 1946, although they continued trading as Mate’s. Burns Philp policy was to maintain the identity of stores they took over with the same staff and management. The Mate’s store in Wodonga was built by local builders A. B. and M. A. Chick. It was a 3 level development in High Street opposite Woodland Grove. It included a mezzanine eating area. Mate’s closed in 1976 when Burns Philp sold the business to Waltons. In 1987 they became Venture Stores. This building also later became Highpoint and Fosseys which closed in 2000. Woodland Grove is located in the triangular reserve at the corner of High and Hovell Streets, Wodonga. ‘Woodland Grove". It was named in honour of John Woodland at the same time as the opening of the band rotunda in September 1920. John Woodland, Wodonga Shire’s first president, was born in Kent, England, in 1829 and came to Sydney with his parents in 1839. He arrived in the Wodonga district about 1853, where he created a successful carrier's business. He first lived on the Old Barnawartha Estate and a few years later purchased land at Green Hills, Wodonga West, where he farmed and also ran a hotel. The hotel licence was relinquished to give attention to duties as secretary and clerk of works to Wodonga Shire, which was then the Wodonga Riding of the Shire of Yackandandah. He was a main agitator for the separation of Wodonga district from Yackandandah Shire. This was successful in 1876, and he became the first president of Wodonga Shire. He held this post for two years, then taking on the role of shire secretary in 1878 until 1913. He concurrently undertook the role of clerk of works (engineer) from 1896 to 1907. As clerk of works he prepared the plans and specifications for, and supervised the construction of the big bridges on the Albury road and at Bonegilla and other important works. In his mid 70s, he proffered his resignation on a number of occasions but it was not accepted. Despite physical weakness and impaired vision, John continued his duties to the end, with the help of his daughter Rose Murphy. The Wodonga Post Office was constructed on the corner of Sydney Road (High Street) and South Street in 1874. It was Wodonga’s second Post Office. The original post office opened on June 1, 1856 near Wodonga Creek. This building was originally built of red brick, although it was later painted over in white. It had an attached residence in South Street and was connected to it by a door. The residence was later demolished to move the mail boxes which had faced High Street, to South Street. The brick Telephone Exchange was constructed in 1946 behind the Post Office but separated from it. It operated as a manual exchange until the late 1960’s or early 1970’s. In 1985 a new post office was opened further south in High Street. This building, greatly renovated, is now part of the Wodonga Community College.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century. In 1906 Patrick Mylon started a passenger transport service in the Albury-Wodonga border area with horses and cabs. His son Jack went into business in the late 1920s, and his grandson Bernie joined the firm early in 1970. When Patrick started with the horses and cabs, each cab carried eight passengers and he always had two horses per cab. As the business expanded, Mylons used a range of buses and coaches including Reo, Chev and Bedford vehicles. During more than 100 years if service to the Wodonga region and beyond, Mylon Motorways received many awards for Excellence and tourism. On July 2, 2008 the company, including its 31 buses and 45 staff members were transferred to the Dyson Group. Tooles Disposals on the corner of High Street and Stanley Street Wodonga Jewellers was opened by Gordon and Flora McWaters in 1951. Over the years it has occupied premises at 3 different locations in High Street. Tooles Disposals, formerly Tooles Motors was established in 1939. It was taken over from William Dobbie, Automotive Engineer who set up his business on this site about 1929. It was opened by Pat Toole and later taken over by his son Bill. The Disposals part of the business was expanded in 1963 and eventually took over the entire building. The central Wodonga building was sold in 2011 and Bill and his wife Debbie moved the stock to their warehouse in Bandiana. They operated from Bandiana while also focusing on online selling. This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.Wodonga, High Street West Businesses including Kwik Stitch Fabrics, T.A.B., Housing Advice and Referral Service, Nolans Sports Store, Pares House and the Terminus Hotel. The Terminus Hotel was built in 1873. It was purchased by Annie and George Allen in 1879. In 1888 they added extensions including a billiard room, a dining room and 18 other rooms. After the death of her husband, Annie Allen continued to run the Terminus Hotel. She later married John Haldon and was licensee of the hotel until 1893 when the license was transferred to William Carkeek. Carkeeks owned the hotel from 1900 - 1903 and again from 1906 - 1909. It was destroyed by fire in 1998 and the building demolished in 1999. In 2021 it is the location of Tristar Medical Centre. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. The One Way sign was for drivers coming from Stanley Street. Parking meters were introduced in High Street in 1977 and remained until 1996. Arch Sloman was the first Manager.
