Melbourne Legacy
Leisure object - Toy Bear, Legacy Bear $20 - Army, 2021
In the 2000s Legacy released a range of Legacy Bears to expand the merchandise available for sale during Legacy Week and at other fundraising opportunities during the year. This bear is in an Australian World War 1 uniform and slouch hat. He was given the name Digger. The term "digger" was military slang for Australian and New Zealand soldiers. It became closely linked with the principles of mateship during World War I. This Digger bear reminds us of the endurance, courage, ingenuity, good humour, hardiness, and resourcefulness the ANZAC forces showed during the Gallipoli campaign and other WW1 campaigns. This was a special edition of the bears. In 2021 the price was increased to $20 per bear.An example of the type of products sold along with Legacy Badges for fundraising in the 2010-2020s.Legacy bear dressed in a World War 1 uniform with a printed cardboard tag.Printed tag gives the price as $20.legacy appeal, fundraising, legacy bear -

Australian Nursing Federation aged care campaign badge, 2006
Button distributed to and worn by Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) members. The ANF has been campaigning for more funding and qualified nurses to improve the quality of aged care for the past several decades, and continues to do so. The 'Aged care nurses worth more not less' campaign was run throughout 2005-2006 during private aged care enterprise bargaining negotiations. Claims focused on unsafe staffing levels and an inadequate skill mix of registered and unregistered staff. The Royal Australian Nursing Federation became the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) in 1989, and then became the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation in 2013, suggesting this badge is from the 1990s or early 2000s.Circular pink and black plastic badge. Tin Tobacco / Cigarette, Circa 1900s
This particular brand of tobacco (State Express 555) was first made in 1915, and was most popular in Asia and China. The number triple 5 was mooted as a sacred number, and may have contributed to its high level of demand by Asian smokers. This would have been a favourite "smoke" for the Chinese emigrants, and especially those who settled in rural areas of Australia. In the era where 'male' type of activities such as motor racing, were sponsored by tobacco companies, roll your own cigarettes was ingrained as a macho male requirement. It was only in the early 2000s, when cigarette advertising had greater restrictions attached to the product, that the roll your own, and cigarettes in general, became less "cool". This particular cigarette tin would have also been useful for roll your own (ready rub tobacco)The significance of this particular Qantas cigarette tin to this rural region is that it demonstrates that overseas travel by plane was not only for the affluent city dweller but also available, and not impossible to the inhabitants of the Kiewa Valley. This cigarette tin also may hint that the influx of Asian immigrants into this region where able to visit relatives back in Asia without too much effort. The use of a Qantas cigarette tin in the Kiewa Valley also suggests a degree of affluent there or tourists from elsewhere. This tobacco tin relays a long ago era, when personal contact, and not something that has been written down by some "unknown", was valued as the true appraisal of a member of the community. This was especially relevant in a small regional area such as the Kiewa Valley. Although social networking was not as fast then as the internet provides now, appearances, manners, fashion and etiquette with first impressions high on the order of evaluating someone in the community. Pointer such as the brand of tobacco smoked was part of the rural assessment method. Up until the demise of the Australian Tobacco Industry, circa 2004, the Kiewa Valley and surrounding district was part of a vibrant producer of tobacco leaves. The remnants of this industry still remain today but the drying sheds (for tobacco leaves) are now used to store hay for the valley's dairy and beef cattle industries. This tobacco/cigarette tin is constructed from tin plated thin rolled steel. The lid is attached by two pressed and formed (from the main frame) hinges using the nip and tuck construction method. The outside lid and frame has a yellow colour anodised to the metal. On the front of the lid are the following printed: "STATE EXPRESS" ,in yellow print, and below this are two horizontal lines in brown and central to these are the numbers "555" . Below this appears and within a 'royal' crest, in yellow writing on a brown circular background "STATE EXPRESS". Below this, in brown print, "PICCADILLY, LONDON". On each side of the tin are printed in brown colour: front side" ARDATH TOBACCO CO. LTD. PICCADILLY, LONDON" . On the left and right sides are printed in brown colour "20 STATE EXPRESS 555". On the rear side is with smaller print "MANUFACTURED UNDER ARRANGEMENTS WITH THE POPRIETORS". On the inside of the lid printed in red colour, are the following words, the royal crest and sketch of the winged kangaroo(symbol of the QANTAS logo). Within a red elongated square border, are the Royal Crest and in very small red print "BY APPOINTMENT TO HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN" underneath in slightly larger print "STATE EXPRESS" The print underneath this and in smaller print is "CIGARETTE MANUFACTURERS ARDARTH TOBACCO CO. LTD." Next to the royal crest and in much larger print is "STATE EXPRESS" and underneath this ,the numerals 555 with the words "CIGARETTES" below. The lower half of the inside lid has the following words and the "flying" kangaroo(winged). These words in written (running free hand) style "Specially packed for QANTAS(in red print). Underneath and in smaller print is "AUSTRALIA'S OVERSEAS AIRLINE". On the bottom of this tobacco tin is stamped into the metal surface, the number"704"qantas supplied cigarettes, roll your own, cigarette tins, smoking accessories, personal effects, tobacco containers, tobacco -

Tin Tobacco, early to mid 1900s
This early tobacco tin was manufactured in England and imported to the "colony" Australia at the beginning of the 1900s. This manufacturer had won the Gold Medal at the Liverpool International Exhibition in 1884. This tobacco would have therefore been very expensive to purchase making it a must for the wealthier client of the Kiewa Valley. The Golden Flake Cavendish smells of the man of wealth and position. In this era the type of dress and the brand of tobacco smoked showed everyone at first glance where the man using it was on the social ladder and his pecking order. With the demise of tobacco smoking in the early 2000s clothes themselves do not show the pecking order in that quickly visualised manner, as at the time of manufacture of this tobacco tin. In the 21st century the level that men are in the socio economic field is realized on "the social information" available on the internet. The remnants of this industry still remain today but the drying sheds (for tobacco leaves) are now used to store hay for the valley's dairy and beef cattle industries.A dark metal tobacco tin covered in a bright metallic gold fleck pattern with a black frame on the lid around a drawing of a woodsman with a musket and axe sitting on a stump overlooking a valley that reads "Pioneer Brand", next to a company seal incorporating a wreath, eagle and shield. The front side reads "Richmond Cavendish Co./ Limited/ Liverpool." and the right and left side "Golden Flake Cavendish". The bottom has the same woodsman feature as the lid. The back side is an elongated diagram featuring tobacco leaves and plant summit. Inside lid surface has a half torn coloured (red, black and green) sketch on paper of the woodsman scene depicted on the top lid.The following inscriptions are displayed on the top and inside lid and on the bottom tobacco tin: "PIONEER BRAND" and to the left of the scene the "SEAL OF THE COMPANY TRADE MARK" Both side of the ens have the following words in large thick print "GOLDEN FLAKE CAVENDISH" and each is contained withih a black boarder.pipe tobacco, cigarette tins, smoking accessories, personal effects, tobacco containers -

Wooragee Landcare Group
Photograph, 27 August 2004
This photograph was taken on Friday the 27th of August 2004 as part of an event called 'Direct Seeding Expo'. This event was one of many held by the Wooragee Landcare Group in the early 2000s which aimed to educate the local community on certain agricultural and biodiversity conservative techniques. This particular photograph shows attendees at the property of Neil and Anne Nankervis, inspecting sites where direct seeding had been used ten months earlier. Three different direct seeding techniques were demonstrated during the day by several experts in the field. Direct seeding involves the sowing of seeds directly into the soil to achieve germination and establishment. It is an alternative to planting seedlings in a contained nursery plot. This direct method is intended to mimic a more natural process of growth, revegetating larger areas in a more efficient manner. This photograph is significant as it provides evidence of a project undertaken by the Wooragee Landcare Group in the early 2000s to educate members of the public on alternative and potentially more efficient methods of planting seedlings. The Wooragee Landcare Group has been instrumental in the co-ordination of programs relating to biodiversity protection in the local area, providing great assistance to landholders.Landscape coloured photograph printed on gloss paperReverse: WAN NA EONA2N2. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 2007
This series of 3 photographs were taken in 2007. They were taken to show the new protective case for the Burke Museum world globe, made by Kurt Wagner. The three photographs show different angles of the globe and case. This series of photographs is of social significance to the people of Beechworth and the surrounding shire. The case was made by local woodworker Kurt Wagner and therefore shows the bond between the Burke Museum and the community of Beechworth through their collaboration. Additionally, the photographs provide an interesting perspective on late 2000s museum interior design as it is possible to see how this part of the museum was set up in 2007.Coloured rectangular photograph printed on photographic paper.5567.1 / 5567.2 / 5567.3 globe, 2007, burke museum, beechworth, kurt wagner, protective case, world globe, woodworking, museum styling, 2000s, community involvement -
The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 02/12/2005
This series of photos all depict Burke Museum curator Beryl Witkowski. The invitation was created in 2005, the other photographs seem to be throughout Beryl Witkowski's career, however it is not possible to determine exactly what date they are from. The photographs show Beryl in front of the main museum building, standing beside exhibits, receiving awards and holding antiques. This series of photographs are centred around the Burke Museum curator Beryl Witkowski. The collection consists of an invitation that features mid-2000s photo editing and numerous photographs of Beryl throughout her career. The invitation provides artistic/ aesthetic significance for its interesting photo editing technique, as photo editing was becoming increasingly popular during this time. Socially, the collection of photographs are significant to the community of Beechworth and to the Burke Museum. As a curator Beryl would have had significant influence over the running and display of the museum, therefore having photographic evidence is a way for the community to reminisce and connect. Some coloured and some black and white photographs printed on paper.7599.1 Obverse: You are invited to Beryl's Bash, 'for her sins, 30 year's at the Burke' 2 December, 7pm-10pm, 2005 at Robert O'Hara Burke Memorial Museum, RSVP to Burke Museum, 03 57 28 8067 / 7599 7599.1 Reverse: and Christmas Party at the Burke Memorial Museum on 2 December, 2005 7-10pm, RSVP to the Burke by 29th November / 7599 7599.2 Obverse: Library Burke / Burke Museum / Open 10am- 5pm 7599.2 Reverse: Burke Museum / Robert O'Hara Burke Memorial [Mus]eum / Exhibitions / Notices / 1856 7599.3 Obverse: Newsagent / Est. 1853 / (illegible) invitation, christmas party, staff party, burke museum, beechworth, beryl witkowski, 2000s, employees, curator, celebration, 2000s photo editing -

The old Sunbury CFA station was situated in Evans Street where part of the Sunbury Shopping Square has been built. It was opened on that site in 1914. In 1969 a newer fire station was built in Evans Street on the opposite side of the road and closer to Macedon Street. From 1969 until 1978 the old fire station became a scout hall. In the early 2000s two new fire stations were built away from the main shopping area. One was built in Jackson Street, opposite the Ball Court Hotel and the other one was built on the corner of Gap Road and Elizabeth Drive. By locating them out of the immediate shopping centre which had become quite busy, it meant that access in and out of the new stations was quicker. Photograph - Codling Collection 01 - High Street Wodonga - Butcher and Tuck Shop, 1980s
Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. These buildings held a variety of businesses over many years. The building on the left operated as a butcher shop, but at times was also a cafe and the site of Whitehouse Motorcycles in the early 2000s. The business on the right at various times operated as "The Tuck Shop", a cafe, a milk bar and grocery shop. For a short while in the late 1930's/early 40's it was run by Sister Hughes after she had conducted the private hospital on the corner of High and Stanley Streets in the 1920's to 30's.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.A black and white image of the butcher and tuck shop near St. Augustine's convent, Wodonga.wodonga businesses, high st wodonga -

The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, c.2000s
This is a photograph of two people (James Toole and Beryl Witkowski) amid celebrations for St Patrick's Day at the Burke Museum in an unknown year. St Patrick's Day is traditionally an Irish religious holiday, but has been adopted in countries such as Australia to celebrate an idea of Irish culture. These celebrations often include wearing green clothes, especially a shamrock hat, and drinking beer, all pictured here. This celebration appears to be taking place within the Burke Museum itself, with museum's iconic stained glass oval window in the background. The Museum, situated in Beechworth, holds a collection of over 30,000 individual objects - including this photograph. James Toole (left) was the 'face of the Beechworth Post Office' until his retirement in 2015, following a 45-year career in mail service. He is a Friend of the Burke Museum, volunteering on projects such as crafting the Burke Museum's float in the 2018 Beechworth Bakery and Beechworth Honey Grand Parade at the Golden Horseshoes Festival. He is known for his flamboyant character. Beryl Witkowski (right) was a historian and curator for the Burke Museum, retiring from her position in 2016. She was involved as a Friend of the Burke Museum from at least 2004.This photograph is significant to the Burke Museum and Beechworth as it depicts two prominent, contemporary members of the museum's paid and volunteer staff in the museum itself. It highlights both how the staff interacted with the museum through celebrations and how the museum itself was used in capacities other than object display. The photograph can also be used to interpret Australia's relationship to the St Patrick's Day holiday, especially given the presence of Irish immigrants to the Beechworth area in the nineteenth century.A colour, square photograph printed on rectangular photographic paper.First Card: WITKOWSKI, Beryl / TOOLE, James / BMM 3067 / Databased Second Card: Burke Museum / 3067 /burke museum, beechworth, museum staff, celebrations, st patrick's day, beer, australia, st patrick's day celebration -

Booklet, Warrnambool & District Pipes & Drums Cookbook, Early 2000s
This cookbook was produced by the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums, partly as a fund-raiser and partly as a promotional exercise. A Pipe Band was formed in Warrnambool in 1906 with twelve foundation members. Simon Fraser was the original Pipe Major and the band has had some changes of name since its foundation. The band was not operating for some time during the years of World War One and again during World War Two but today under the name of Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums it performs at concerts, dinners, band competitions, official functions, street parades etc and has won both Victorian and interstate Championship titles. This book is of interest as an example of a fund-raising exercise by a local organization early in the 21st century. This is a soft-cover book of 94 pages. It is a cookery book published by the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums. It has a blue cover overlaid with plastic and is bound with plastic rings. The front cover has the logo of the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums. It has an introduction, an acknowledgements page and two pages of information on the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums organization.Front Cover: ‘Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums Cookbook’cookbook, warrnambool, warrnambool and district pipes and drums -
