These five photographs were most likely taken in the 1970s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Photos .1P to .3P are annotated with the name of the technicians written on the back. Although Photo .4P is not annotated the technician is positively identified. In these five photos the technician is applying a UV-sensitive pigmented dye emulating one of the print colours to a white opaque polyester sheet mounted on a rotating table in a whirler. The coated sheet was dried before placement in a vacuum light frame beneath a stud registered map negative. They were then exposed to a carbon arc lamp. If there was more than one negative – typical for a type impression or 1st proof, the process was repeated for the other negatives of that print colour. There was a single exposure for composite negatives which was typical for the 2nd and final proof - the pre-press proof. The sheet was removed and washed with water and dried leaving the exposed colour impression. The technician repeated this process using process or spot dyes for remaining publication colours. Type impressions were a combination of the map grid and the topographic features in their correct print colours, forming a base for the cartographer to accurately position map names and symbols on a clear film overlay. The pre-press proof was a cost-effective way of producing a one-off visual copy of the map or chart product. It enabled cartographers to perform a quality inspection and correct any faults before publication. The Planata Printing Press was one of the replacements for the George Mann Printing Presses. It was more reliable than the Komori Printing Press however procurement was difficult when spare parts were required. The Planeta Printing Press was built in East Germany and was in service at the Army Svy Regt from 1976 to 1994. These two photos were most likely taken in the volleyball court area of the Army Survey Regiment, part of the grounds of Fortuna, Bendigo, in c1989. The occasion was probably to farewell SSGT Kevin Boehm, who was a cartographic draughtsman, after 22 years of service in the ADF. It is likely Bendigo Toyota was approached to loan their miniature Toyota Tarago; a vehicle used for marketing purposes. The novelty of this quirky “drive past” event was that Kev was well known as a part-time car salesman and often took the opportunity of assisting new staff in buying a car. Kev was a qualified pilot and often took time on weekends to take unit staff and their families on recreational flights over Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga. The purpose of the training was probably to provide personnel a practical knowledge of navigation and map reading, RATEL and Survival in the Field, vehicle camouflage, teamwork and leadership. This set of 16 photos of the Christmas Children’s Party were taken in the and the grounds of Fortuna, Army Survey Regiment in 1992. The Christmas party was an annual event enjoyed by the soldiers’ families, featuring amusements such as the ‘pig train’ and pony rides, a historic fire engine provided by the Golden Square Fire Brigade with Santa on board and refreshments such as cordial, lollies, ice creams and fairy floss. Single members readily volunteered to assist in the running of the party. An occasional highlight was displays of military hardware such as tanks and APC from the Puckapunyal’s Armoured Centre. Catering staff/contractors taking a break outside the kitchen are also featured in this collection. The Army Survey Regiment Wives Club was instrumental in establishing the Tennis Hut, featuring in photos .1P to .5P. The Wives Club initiated many social events. MAJ Ray Redman appears in his mess dress by the Roman fountain, serving a silver service morning tea to CPL Pat Drury, as a result of a losing bet on the 1991 Rugby League Grand Final. Pat Drury was a very keen rugby league supporter and followed Penrith, who lost its first Grand Final appearance to the Canberra Raiders in 1990. Penrith reversed the result the following year against Canberra winning their first premiership. This is a photograph of LTCOL Peter Constantine AM, who was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1975 to 1976. He then assumed command of the School of Military Survey (SMS) from 1976 to his retirement in January 1982. LTCOL Constantine was one of RASvy’s most revered officers in this era, with 32 years of meritorious service as a leader on active duty in Vietnam in 1969 and the commanding officer of the Regiment and School.
