This Shirley College school badge belonged to Gladys Elvira Linton, nee Richardson (b. 1891). Shirley College was a private girls' school situated in a large single-storey house in Seymour Grove, Brighton from around 1898 until 1912. The school was first run by the Misses Bird and later by Miss Elizabeth Stewart. Gladys married First World War veteran and Brighton local Richard Vivers Linton in 1919. She looked back fondly on her days at Shirley College and helped to organise school reunions well into the 1930s, long after the school itself was gone.Metal Shirley College school badge in the shape of a hollow crest containing the interlocking letters "S" and "C". The Scantlebury family moved to Cheltenham from Linton. The father, George, was a medical practitioner. His daughter, Vera, became an early woman graduate of medicine at the University of Melbourne. Mary Margaret Baird, born circa 1834, was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Logan, of Butterdean, Berwickshire. In 1860 in Victoria, she married Matthew Hamilton Baird, a well-known pastoralist and grazier, the owner of Mt Bute Station near Linton, as well as other rural and metropolitan properties. Margaret Baird lived at Mt Bute in the 1860s and early 1870s, after which it is understood she lived mostly in Melbourne. She died in 1910 at 'Waratah', Clendon Road, Toorak. Margaret and Matthew Hamilton Baird had nine children born between 1861 and 1877, not all of whom survived to adulthood. They are both buried in the Linton cemetery.Framed, hand-coloured/modified photograph of Margaret Baird. Caroline Lewers, née Murrell, b. 1867 at Happy Valley, was a daughter of Ambrose and Mary Murrell. Prior to her marriage, Caroline Murrell assisted her mother to manage the Victoria Hotel in Linton. In 1910 she married William Ochiltree Lewers (son of Annie Lewers and Samuel Lewers). Caroline's sister-in-law Lily (Mary Lillian) Murrell, née Young, was born in Birmingham, England, and migrated to Australia with her father James Young when she was seven. In Australia James Young changed his name to Clarke and was known as James Young Clarke (Lily also used this surname). James Young Clarke moved with Lily to Linton, where he ran J Y Clarke's tobacconist and barber shop in Sussex Street. Lily Clarke married William Murrell, son of Ambrose and Mary Murrell, in 1901. They lived at Daylesford and other localities before returning to Linton in about 1912, when William Murrell took over management of the newsagency. Found at Wet Flat ("Chinaman's Flat") near Linton, an area once occupied by many Chinese miners. This object was once thought to have been the lid of a container (possibly one used for storing snuff) and it is sometimes referred to as the "Chinese tin lid".Small, flat, rectangular piece of metal on which Chinese characters have been inscribed. It is understood that the fragment may once have been part of a container used to store tea leaves or spices. James Garland Colliver lived and worked in Linton between 1863 and 1875, when he moved to Donald. He was actively involved in Linton's business and community life. (See Colliver family file at LDHS.) This photograph may show two adjacent business premises on the east side of Sussex Street, north of Clyde Street: Edwin Ball or Ball Brothers, blacksmiths, and J.G. Colliver, "Machinist". The Ball and Colliver families were related and are understood to have worked collaboratively. Some pieces depict animals, others are letters which can be combined on a plastic backing piece to form a custom-made stamp.
