Used to preserve cheese, butter, cream and meat and to set jellies. Invented circa 1900 at Coolgardie, W.A. and was in use until electric refrigeration became available.

During the Victorian goldrushes of the 1850s thousands of Chinese migrants arrived to seek their fortunes. At that time many came to the lucrative gold fields of Northeast Victoria. After the Gold rush, many Chinese migrants returned home. However, a number settled in the area as merchants, hawkers and market gardeners in surrounding towns including Wodonga, the Ovens, King, Buffalo River and Kiewa Valleys. They also rented lands and established themselves in the hops and tobacco farming industries. Items of Chinese origin made their way into many households. Importation of Chinese mass produced items such as this lantern continued well into the 20th century and were common domestic items across Australia before households were connected to electricity.This item is representation of kerosene / paraffin lamps used throughout Australia to provide lighting inside and outdoors prior to the widespread availability of electricity.A small hurricane lamp with a rounded tank and small carry handle attached to the top. A larger handle is also attached at the top of the frame. It has a lever to open the glass tank. It has a metal base which is filled with kerosene. It has a screw knob to open the kerosene receptacle. The metal hood also has vents. The Chinese characters around the base translate to "Shanghai Guanghuaheng".Around base : Chinese characters. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This homemade photographic printing frame was built by Louis Haeusler (b.1878) and demonstrates his engineering capabilities. Rather than purchase the required materials for his home dark room processing, Louis would make any tools he needed from found materials around the Haeusler family home. Louis’ photographic equipment is among the many objects in the Haeusler Collection that represent home and social life in early twentieth century Wodonga. The item is handmade and unique, with well documented provenance. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history. Sally MILLER (1949-2015) Sally Miller completed undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Fine Art at the Sydney College of the Arts, and in 1995 a Master of Arts, Visual Arts by research at Deakin University. Miller lectured at the Ballarat University College (later Federation University) School of Arts in Printmaking and Drawing from 1994-1998, where her roles included Coordinator, Honours Program, Coordinator Printmaking, Lecturer in Printmaking and Honours Supervisor. In 2000 Sally Miller was an invited Artist-in-Residence and guest lecturer in Drawing and Printmaking at the School of Art, Australian National University, Canberra. She later became Art Director of Art Unlimited studio for adult artists with disabilities for St Laurence Community Services. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Wes WALTERS (06 August 1928 - 19 August 2014) Born Mildura, Victoria From 1940 to 1945 Wes Walters attended the Ballarat High School. He then studied architecture at the Gordon Institute in Geelong, followed by art at the Ballarat School of Mines (a division of the Ballarat School of Mines). During his time at the Ballarat Technical Art School (later Federation University Australia) Walters studied under Neville Bunning and Taylor Kellock, and was awarded the Ballarat Ladies Art Association Scholarship in 1948. He next moved to Melbourne to work as a commercial artist with the George Patterson advertising agency. Each evening Walters studied life drawing at the Victoria Artists’ Society and taught himself anatomy. Wes Walters excelled in both abstract and realist art. He won the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s Minnie Crouch Prize for watercolour art in 1953 and 1956. He won the prestigious Archibald Prize in 1879 for his portrait of Phillip Adams. Artist's Statement: I spent time visiting the barracks, museums, libraries, gaining information, making special pencil drawings and colour notes, when and where possible. Preparatory drawings for larger paintings were always on detail paper. The reason for this was I could use both sides, correfting mistakes on either side, until a satisfactory end. I use this procedure so that the surface of the painting paper was not effected by erasion. The final drawing was traced on having rubbed a stick of charcoal on the detail paper. I have used this procedure from my early days as a commercial artist. In drawing each horseman fully and tracing each horseman fuly in his place in relation to the whole and rubbibg out the parts covered by the nearer objects. Such essential things as legs and shadows are sure to be in the right place. Most of the pencil drawings of the palace gates, and other features I needed had to be made from a standing position. all these were filed for future reference. Everything had to be in the right proportion to the palace gates. The procedure for the Escort is as follows: If the Life Guards mount the escort an officer of the Blues rides at the right of the coach by invitation. The Guards officer rides on the left. Then follows the Standard flanked by a commissioned officer on the right. The trumpeter on the left. The trumpeter rides on a white horse. He has a selection of twelve different uniforms. After that follows the unit. The stirrups used by the officers are squarish. The troopers stirrups are a conventional form. All personnel riding and on no account rise in the stirrups as normally they would at the trot. This modifies the ragged impression of heads bobbing up haphazardly - their behinds become acclimatized in time." Gift of the Artist, 1981. Allan BERNALDO (05 August 1898-25 June 1988) Born Creswick, Victoria Allan Bernaldo won a scholarship to the Ballarat School of Mines to study Architecture. He received a certificate of merit in 1917, and the Ballarat School of Mines President's medal for the most meritorious Art student. Allan Bernaldo was editor of the Ballarat School of Mines Magazine in 1918. He became known as a commercial artist, teacher and water-colourist who specialiesd in horses and flowers. He died at St. Ronan’s Nursing Home in Armadale, Victoria and was buried at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, with his wife Florence Victoria May Elliott, who predeceased him in 1966. Sydney PERN (c1876-1967) Dr Sydney Pern began practicing medicine in Yarram before setting up practice in Ballarat. He was a competent artist, and as an amateur anthropologist collection Aboriginal artefacts during travels in Central and Northern Australia. Dr Sydney Pern died aged 91 on 23 October 1967, and is buried in the Ballaarat New Cemetery. The ethnographic collection was housed at his home, 10 Raglan Street North, before being donated to the Ballarat School of Mines Museum. When the museum was closed in the 1960s Dr Pern requested that the collection pass to the City Council, and from there it was housed at the Gold Museum. An artwork by Sydney Pern was exhibited in the 1958 Crouch Prize at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. John Andrew GARDNER (1906-1987) Born Camperdown, Victoria John Gardner studied at the Nataional Gallery School Melbourne. He later travelled with Rex Battarbee through central and eastern Australia. He initially worked as a commercial art before taking up painting full time and became known for painting bush landscape and Aboriginal life in oils. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The suite of lithographs for the book was started by John Brack in September 1981 and finished and published in December 1982. The book was launched with a series of original conte drawings, from which the lithographs were based, in Realities Galleries, Melbourne. As such a high cost of production was involved in the binding of the book, only fifteen copies were originally bound for exhibition and sale at the show. Subsequent to this approximately another thirty copies were bound, making a total finished edition of fewer than fifty copies, far less than the anticipated 200. A number of the 50 hors commerce editions have been sold as individual plates through auctions and galleries. A number of sheets were recently discovered through the estate of Brack’s art dealer Rudy Komon (1908-1982). John BRACK (1920-1999) A key Melbourne artist who lived in Canterbury, Melbourne. This image of a nude is most probably John Brack's wife and is drawn in his studio, a pristine space with immaculate floors often seen in many of his paintings.His most famous work '5 pm Collins Street, Melbourne' featured on an Higher School Certificate (HSC) English exam and gave Melbourne children the opportunity to critically analyse this image. Brack's large abstract canvas of the Battle of Waterloo, "The Battle", was completed in the early 1980s and features pencils march across the canvas in ordered motion. This biography was written by Dr Susan Paterson. Framed lithograph in black ink on white paper depicting nude woman, with smaller nude woman image on verso. Kenneth JACK AM MBE RWS, (5 October 1924 – 10 June 2006) Australian watercolour artist Kenneth Jack who specialised in painting the images of an almost forgotten outback life; old mine workings, abandoned ghost towns, decaying farm buildings. He became a professional painter at the age of 39 after giving up his job as senior instructor at the Caulfield Institute of Technology. In 1977 he was elected to The Royal Watercolour Society and in 1982 was awarded the MBE, and the Order of Australia (AM) followed in 1987.
