Photograph - Bones Day - Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo versus RAAF School of Radio, Laverton, 1984, 1985 and 1988
These five photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio in November 1984, 1985, and 1988. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The “O.H.A.R.A Rock” seen in photo 6276.2P was awarded to PTE Zahra for the lowest score in rifle shooting. He had to lug it with him for the rest of the evening. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. Photograph - Capturing Topographic Features with a Wild B8 – Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1980
These four photographs of SPR Santina (Argetto) Straube capturing topographic features – plotting with a Wild B8 stereo plotter were most likely taken in c1980. Introduced in 1966, the Wild B8 stereo plotter was used for plotting topographic detail and contours. These analogue machines were manually controlled by adjusting the control knobs for the orientation of the 3D image. The B8s used a nine-inch square photo image on a film or glass diapositive which allowed highly accurate extraction of map features. At first, plotting by B8 and B9 equipment was undertaken at the aerial photography scale of 1:80,000 in pencil onto a controlled plotting sheet. Sheets were then inked up and reduced photographically to the 1: 100,000 publication scale for scribe impression production. In these photos SPR Santina (Argetto) Straube was plotting with a pencil or ink pen mounted at the far end of the pantograph arm. The plotting procedure was upgraded to direct plotting in ink with photographic reduction to publication scale. In 1975 four B8s were upgraded with tri-axis locaters as part of the Input Sub-system to enable digital extraction to AUTOMAP 1’s topographic database. When AUTOMAP 2 was introduced in 1982 these B8s were upgraded, and additional machines added to expand the Army Survey Regiment’s digital capture capability. This is a set of four photographs of a technician capturing topographic Features with a Wild B8 stereo plotter in Air Survey Squadron – Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. 1980. The photographs were on 35mm negative film and were scanned at 96 dpi. They are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. .1) to .4) Photo, black & white, c1980. photograph - Aerotriangulation Production – Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1980
This collection of five photos was most likely taken in 1980. Wild PUG4 point transfer devices were used by technicians in Air Survey Squadron to stereoscopically view the photography containing the survey control points and the mapping aerial photography. The Control points were transferred from the control photography to the mapping diapositives of aerial photography by drilling their locations into the photographic emulsion. The Zeiss (Jena) Stecometer analytic stereocomparator for air photography was introduced at Air Survey Squadron in 1963. Aerotriangulation production was expedited using computers for analytical photogrammetric processes. The technician accurately measured between pass, tie, and survey control points on aerial photographs.Air Survey Squadron Aerotriangulation Section - Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. c1980. Photograph - CSP In-house Bid Announcement, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, 1994
This is a set of 14 photographs of an All-Staff meeting held by the lake at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 24th of April 1994. At this meeting CO LTCOL Duncan Burns announced that under Defence’s Commercial Support Program (CSP), the In-House bid submitted in 1993 by a team led by then CO LTCOL Bob McHenry was successful. The In-House bid proposed the establishment of an organisation based at Fortuna to carry out non-core production with 150 of the 373 Survey Corps positions converted to Defence civilian positions. 110 of the Defence civilian positions would be filled voluntarily by military personnel under Section 81B of the Public Service Act 1992 with the remaining 40 positions filled by Public Service recruitment. Other options offered to Survey Corps personnel were postings to 1st Topographic Survey Squadron in Enoggera, QLD, transfer to another Corps in the Australian Army or discharge from the ADF. The In-House bid also proposed 143 Survey Corps military positions to remain at Fortuna to perform ‘core strategic non-sovereign tasks.’ However, Army subsequently decided to abolish the 143 positions, disband 4th Field Survey Squadron, Adelaide, SA and lastly, the demise of the Royal Australian Survey Corp in June 1996. This period of the Army Survey Regiment’s history is covered in more detail in pages 160 to 162 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4.This is a set of 14 photograph of an All-Staff Meeting held at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 24th of April 1994, to announce the success of Army’s Defence’s Commercial Support Program (CSP) In-house Bid. Photograph - Cartographic Production – Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1960 -1975
This is a set of 10 photographs of Cartographic Squadron technicians undertaking map production tasks in at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1968 to 1975. Production was undertaken on the top floor of Fortuna Villa. The Fotosetter type setting machine shown in photos .1P and .2P. replaced the letterpress method of type production in 1956. CPL Arty Lane specialised in the operation of the Fotosetter type setting machine for many years. For more information on the Fotosetter, see page 71 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. The computer based Editwriter Model 7500 typesetting system shown in photos .3P and .4P. was introduced in 1975 as a replacement to the aging Fotosetter. It was operated by a specialised technician, who generated a large variety of map type styles and sizes quickly and reliably, as well as text panels. Output on Copy proof adhesive backed stripping type film replaced messy wax and spray adhesives in 1978. The Editwriter capability supported all RASvy units and its contractor type setting requirements. The Aristo Co-ordinatorgraph shown in photos .5P to .7P was introduced in 1962. It was a large heavy steel framed light table with a scribing head that moved in a XY direction using a vernier calibrated measuring scale to 0.001 of an inch. Whilst hand operated it was much quicker and accurate than manual grid and graticule calculation, plotting and scribing. The history of co-ordinatorgraphs is covered in more detail with additional historic photographs, in pages 50 to 51 and page 88 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. The scribing process as shown in photos .8P to .9P was the cartographic process of drafting features such as drainage, relief, vegetation, roads and culture on specially coated map reproduction material. The cartographic technician scribed out the map feature such as a contour to a specified line width on the map sheet, using a tool affixed with a sapphire tipped cutter. Photograph - Orthorectification Equipment - Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1975, c1988
Orthophoto mapping provided the Survey Corps with the capability to produce map products quickly in the event of a crisis. These are four photographs of equipment used by the Army Survey Regiment to produce orthophotomaps. The Wild GZ1 orthophoto projector shown in photo.1P was introduced in 1973 and was the first equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography. Height profiles were originally produced on a PEB8 Stereo profiler and later were software generated. Photos of the PEB8 are available in Victorian Collections item 6222.17P, photos .5P and .6P. In the same era the IBM 1130 computer; OMI/Nistri AP/C-3 analytical plotter with coordinatograph, OP/C orthophoto projector and Zeiss Planimat D2 stereoplotters were introduced. Orthorectification is the process of removing geometric distortions and scale errors/variations from images. Images have tilt and relief distortions that make it difficult to compare accurately a map and an image of the same geographic area. Once an image is orthorectified, features on the image are shown in their planimetric locations. The WILD OR1 orthophoto projector and workstation shown in photos .2P to.4P was introduced in the mid-1980s. It was the second-generation equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography, replacing the system introduced in 1973. See items 6124.5P and 6133.4P for more photographs of orthorectification equipment. These four photographs of orthorectification equipment were taken at the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1975 and c1988. The photos are on 35mm colour slides and scanned at 96 dpi. They are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. .1) - Photo, colour, c1975, Wild GZ1 orthophoto projector. .2) - Photo, colour, c1988, WILD OR-1 unrectified colour photo in carrier, orthorectified and re-scaled colour image. .3) & .4) - Photo, colour, c1988, WILD OR-1 Orthorectification Workstation.1P to .4P – Some of the equipment is annotated on the frame of the 35mm slides.royal australian survey corps, rasvy, army survey regiment, asr, army svy regt, fortuna -

Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia. Two black and white photographs of two men dressed in suits standing together and shaking hands in one photo. Photograph - Fortuna Falcons Football Team - Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo, 1995
This set of nine photographs was taken at an Army Survey Regiment Australian Rules Football social game at Golden Square Football Oval, Victoria in 1995. It is possible the game was between Product Construction Squadron and Data Acquisition Squadron, as it is apparent there are a mixture of Officers, WOs SGTs, CPLs and SPRs in each of the two teams. It is unlikely it was against another unit as it seems the CO LTCOL Duncan Burns and his counterpart are involved in the coin toss, and neither was wearing football boots.
