Date is approximate - early 1930s. Mr Oswald Joyce and Mr Bert Lamble used to ride their bicycles to the country to find work when they became unemployed. This included reworking old gold mines. Here they are seen leaving for Enoch's Point where they fossicked for gold during the Depression. A check of the electoral rolls points to this being the home of Frederick Harry Percival Lamble, labourer, born in Collingwood. He and his family continued to live at 87 Essex Road until his death in 1968 and his occupation is consistently given as labourer. The rotunda was built in 1912 by Clarence Montgomery for the Surrey Hills Progress Association and the local community and dedicated to John Gray, "a highly respected and revered citizen". Surrey Hills Brass Band regularly gave concerts in the rotunda, provided music for regular 'loyal' celebrations and also for silent films held in the gardens. The rotunda was quite elevated off the ground due to the slope of the gardens and the bioscope was stored in the room underneath. This was later used as the infant welfare centre until the Progress Association built a dedicated facility for these purposes. The rotunda was demolished in 1972. Clarence Montgomery, carpenter, was living in Sunbury Crescent in 1914. By 1916 he had moved to 83 Croydon Road where he lived for the rest of his life. Clarence was born in 1869 in Taradale, son of John Montgomery and Jane Ford. He married Sarah Ann Ingram in Echuca in 1894. Their children were: 1. Annie (Mrs P Paynter) born Echuca in 1895 2. William Henry born Echuca in 1897 3. Christina Mary (Mrs F Meyers) born Echuca in 1898 4. Violet (Mrs G Ewing) born Echuca in 1902 5. Clarence George Ingram born Echuca in 1906 and died aged 7 months. Violet became a tailoress and Christina a dressmaker. William became a carpenter like his father. Sarah Ann Montgomery died at their home in June 1932 aged 62 years. Clarence died in August 1946 aged 77 years. They are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (P-EB-0020). John Gray was "actively associated with all movements for the benefit of neighbours and fellow citizens". [Quote from the official tribute on his death in 1909.] He was very active in the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the early 1900's. The rotunda built in the Surrey Gardens by the Progress Association in 1912 was dedicated to him. John Gray was born in 1861 in Eldorado. He died on 7 December 1909 in Surrey Hills and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M0472). He married Emma Beckett in 1888 at 'Guildford Villa' in Essex Road, the Beckett home. They are listed in both the 1903 and 1906 electoral rolls in Arundel Crescent; his occupation is given as bootmaker. The Alan Holt property register identifies this as 24 Arundel Crescent, known as 'Tumberumba'. John and Emma had a large family: (Gunner) John Robert Gray (1888, Surrey Hills - 21 June 1917, France) Benjamin Walter Gray (1890, Surrey Hills - 1949, Heidelberg) Herbert Harry Gray (1892, Surrey Hills - 1959, Queensland) William Beckett Gray (1897, Surrey Hills - 1899, Surrey Hills) Norman Douglas Gray (1901, Surrey Hills - 1947, Sydney) Evelyn Lizzie Gray (1906, Surrey Hills - 1983) Evelyn married Reginald Roberts and donated a number of photos to the collection. The donor Violet Ewing (nee Montgomery) was Clarence's daughter. She married George Isaac Henry Ewing (blacksmith) in 1934. They inherited the family home at 83 Croydon Road. Although constructed 5 years after their opening, this rotunda was a central feature of the Surrey Gardens which was planted to a design adapted from one suggested by the renowned landscape gardener and botanist William Robert Guilfoyle (1840-1912). Rotundas were a key feature of many late nineteenth and early twentieth century public parks. This particular rotunda was notable for the Chinoiserie influence reflected in its roof. Surrey Gardens are now regarded as one of the City of Boroondara's heritage gardens and this image is significant as evidence of the design of the rotunda which is no longer extant. It is also significant as evidence of the extent of the role of the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the provision of public facilities. Maitland' was built in 1889 for Thomas Zeplin, who was a Professor of Music. He owned all the land bound by Union Road, Wilson and Montrose Streets and the railway line. 1 Bedford Avenue stayed in family ownership until purchased by Camberwell Council in 1986, initially for a car park. However it was renovated to become part of Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. It was opened on 23 November 1990. No 3 Bedford Avenue was built for Thomas Zeplin's daughter and named 'Mervyl' or 'Merryl'. Mrs Brodecky (donor) was the great-granddaughter of Thomas Zeplin. The 2 girls are granddaughters of Thomas Zeplin. Electoral roll information: 1972 & 1977: Albert Vojteck Brodecky, manager, 1 Bedford Avenue. 1977: Ray Nanette Brodecky. There are 2 copies. Thomas had this built for his son and family. The house was occupied by his family, though sometimes rented out. His great-grand-daughter Mrs. A. Brodecky sold to the Camberwell Council in 1986. Image was originally copied by Chatham Primary School for inclusion in their pictorial history "A Patchwork of People - Chatham Past and Present" [ISBN 0 646 29370 2], by Susan Barnett and Julia Ashby, published in 1996 for the school's 70th anniversary. This afternoon dress belonged to Clara Johnstone Miller (nee Bell, 1866-1910). Clara was the only daughter of Mr James Bell, a councillor of the Shire of Leigh (today a part of Golden Plains Shire) and owner of Woolbrook Homestead in Teesdale, near Geelong. In 1888, Clara married prominent businessman, racehorse owner, racing identity and pastoralist Septimus Miller (1854-1925). Septimus was the sixth of seven children born to Henry 'Money' Miller and Eliza Miller (nee Mattinson). 'Money' Miller was a well known financier and politician and reputedly one of Australia's wealthiest people in his time. In 1889, Clara and Septimus moved into the house 'Cantala' in Dandenong Road, Caulfield. They had one child, Gwendoline Stewart Miller, who died in 1902 at the age of thirteen of diabetes - a largely untreatable condition at the time (insulin would not be discovered until 1921). Clara died in 1910, aged only 44. Septimus subsequently married Helen (nee Henderson), with whom he had a son, Ronald (1915-1990). The Millers were buried in the Brighton General Cemetery in a large Gothic-style vault. Upon Clara's death, Septimus sent much of her clothing and Gwendoline's to her mother Mary Bell. Some of these items were passed down to two of Clara's nieces, Miss Mary Bell and Mrs Lois Lillies, who donated them to BHS around 1973.A salmon (pale orange pink) corded silk afternoon dress with orange beaded embellishments, consisting of a bodice (.1) and skirt (.2) from c.1890. The bodice features a high standing collar with triple pleated bone silk chiffon trim along the top line, under the chin. This same chiffon is also secured in two pieces gathered and secured under the collar and and at the waist adding volume over the bust line and partially obscuring the jacket closing. The chiffon is secured at the side into the main fabric of the bodice by the beaded embellishment. The pink seed beads are sewn in lines of five beads one after the other creating a diagonal design that tapers from the shoulder to the waist. The bodice is boned around the front and back and secured down the centre font by nineteen hook and eyes and additional cotton tapes. Further beading details the bottom centre front and base line of the bodice. The shoulders have been repaired with replacement fabric to match, from our records it appears that the repair work was performed in circa 1974 but no record exists of the original shoulder design and if the repair was an exact copy of the original. The repaired shoulders feature a small frill around the shoulder yoke and top of the arm. The sleeve is fitted and three quarter finishing just below the elbow. The base of the sleeve is also trimmed with the pink bead design and bone three pleat chiffon trim. The back of the bodice features shaped panels contouring the jacket neatly in at the waist and then splitting and splaying out over the fullness of the skirt. The skirt appears to have been floor or ankle length held at the waist by a wide waistband. The skirt openings have been altered from the original currently featuring two openings secured by press studs. The skirt is gathered to the waistband at front and back creating fullness. The album contains photographs of travel, sheep, farms, stations, people and landscapes from around the world. Mary Selina Inglefinger was born in 1856 in Kings Plain, NSW and was the eldest daughter of Joseph Inglefinger and his wife Maria Viktoria Bertel (Barthl), both of whom were born in Germany; they applied to come to Australia in 1854. They had 10 children, the first 8 born in Kings Plain. In 1879, Joseph Inglefinger bought James Staig's farm in Boundary (Warrigal) Road, near the corner of Bona Vista Avenue, Surrey Hills. The 1903 and 1905 electoral rolls list them in Boundary Road. In 1875 Mary married Charles Simpson, stepson of James Staig in Scots Church, Melbourne. They had 3 boys and 3 girls. This photograph was donated by Mrs Howard whose aunt, Dorothy Christian, attended Lauriston from 1904 to 1908. Lauriston’s very first sports photograph is in 1905, of our students standing with their hockey sticks to mark their participation in the Girls’ Schools’ Hockey Association. Hockey was without doubt the “Queen of Games” at Lauriston during the school’s early decades. The school’s founders Miss Margaret and Miss Lilian Irving were firm believers in the character-building nature of team sports and were instrumental in establishing hockey as a competitive sport for girls in Melbourne. Lauriston’s founders Lilian Irving one of the two sisters who founded Lauriston, saw hockey played in England and brought the game back to Melbourne. Lilian arranged for the first girls inter-school hockey match, between Lauriston and Ruyton in 1903. Her sister Margaret subsequently joined with Mary Morris of Melbourne Girls’ Grammar to establish the Girls’ Schools’ Hockey Association in 1905. The Association organised regular competitions between schools. Hockey dominated Lauriston’s sporting life until well into the 1950s, with regular class, house, inter-school, and staff-student matches.
