Photograph, Knox Collection, Survey camp for Colac-Beech Forest railway, 1901
Plans for a rail connection between Colac and Beech Forest had been drawn up in 1884 and 1889 but proofed inconclusive because of the enormous cost involved in building a railway in such difficult terrain. Because of the financial depression in the early 1890s such expenditure went of hold. Towards the end of the decade planners recognised that a narrow gauge could be a viable alternative and it was taken up by the community, Parliamentary representatives and the government, although Victorian Railways administration was against the idea. This was overridden. The 1898 Parliament approved a 2 foot 6 inch gauge from Colac to Beech Forest although strict financial limits were set. The route was to be the most direct and the infrastructure the most basic. Construction began in 1900 entailing very steep grades and myriad curves until it finished in 1902. Surveyors and their assistants came before and during the track laying for the whole distance.B/W. Slide, Legacy Camp 1956-7, 1957
A colour slide of boys and two legatees near a green bus on Burke Road in 1956-57. It is probably at Blamey House in Kew, as other slides show camps at the residence during summer holidays. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image the best available.A record of camps being organised for children.Colour slide photo of boys near a green bus in a cardboard Kodachrome mount.Handwritten on front 'Legacy camp 1956-57'. Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, Legacy camp, Balnarring East, 1929
One of the earliest camps held for Junior Legatees, showing tents, charabancs and fashions of the day. Legatee Stan Savige had a property in the Balnarring area and some camps were held on his property. Names noted on the back of the photos include: Pat Hanna, Aaron Beattie, Stan Savige, Sandy Lowe, Bill Pearce, Lyn Rule, Donovan Joynt, Carl Carleton, George Collins, Bill Pearce, Rupert Hely, Norman Stafford. Some of these were founding legatees. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started in the early years of Legacy with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built in the 1930s. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children.A visual record of a camp run for Junior Legatees, with founder Stan Savige in one of the photographs, showing the accommodation and activities.Folding wallet, brown and cream with black printing, set of sepia photos varying sizes, 1 negative for 00061.7Wallet: 00061.1 “77283” (pencil), Kodak (Australasia) marketing text Photos: 00061.2 “Legacy Camp, Balnarring Xmas 1930/Taken by Aaron Beattie/Pat Hanna rear/Bill Pearce Lfront Lyn Rule/Donovan Joynt Centre Front/Carl Carlton Right Front/Child unknown/extreme left 2 unknown poss. from Bendigo Club” 00061.3 “N 481” 00061.5 “N 481” 00061.6 “Legacy Club Camp Hut/Balnarring East/ 7. Cradle, January 1940
Creator Walter Kiessling was interned in September 1939, leaving his pregnant wife, Rosa, alone in Melbourne. After visiting Walter in Dhurringile Interment Camp and then Camp 1, wife Rosa then appealed to Camp 1 Commandant Major Schrader for permission to have Walter visit her and the baby in hospital under guard escort. Soon after, permission was given to take the baby to Camp 1 for a christening with a Lutheran Pastor. While inside Camp 1, Walter and his internee friend Rudolf Schultz crafted the cradle for the baby.Wooden cradle with painted floral decorations and heart shaped holes in the ends.INTERNMENT CAMP TATURA AUSTRALIA JANUARY, 1940kiessling, cradle, woodwork, internment camp woodwork, major schrader, walter kiessling, rudolf schultz -
