The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. Cast iron lace was made in foundries in most cities. There were 42 such foundries in Melbourne alone. It was cheaper to make than wrought iron. "Pig iron", iron ore, was melted in a blast furnace, mixed with alloys and then poured into moulds usually made of sand. The Hildersheim Rose is also known as the 1000 year old rose bush, and is the oldest known living rose in the world. It grows on a wall of the Hildesheim Cathedral, a Catholic cathedral in Hildesheim, Germany, that is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The cathedral and the adjacent St. Michael's Church have been on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1985. The Cathedral was destroyed by Allied bombers in 1945 during the Second World War, but the roots of the rose bush survived and it blossomed again among the ruins. The 8 diatonic scales bells were cast in London and arrived in Bendigo in 1873, being rung for the first time at Easter 1876. However due to the unsafe nature of the bell tower the bells could only be chimed rather than rung from 1880. In 1963 they were returned to London for recasting and on their return they were installed at a lower level of the bell tower. Oliver Heyward was born in Tasmania 16/3/1926 and died in Melbourne 15/12/2003. He was a Tasmanian Rhodes Scholar in 1949 and was ordained into the Anglican Church in England in 1954. He initially served in England before returning to Tasmania and then Victoria. Upon his enthronement as Bishop in 1975, he became the 6th Bishop of Bendigo from 1975 - 1991.
