The local parish church, St Andrew's in Alwington, goes back to the 13th Century, and stands in a picturesque environment, with magnificant views across the Yeo Valley. It is the Pine-Coffin family place of worship, with various members of the family having been Patrons of this church over the centuries, and naturally many of them have been interred there over the years. http://www.alwingtonparish.org/531-parish-church.html The DARK family lived at Alwington before emigrating to Victoria in 1851.W. Carlisle Cathedral The Priory near the cathedral was founded in 1122 by King Henry I. There were earlier buildings on the site. Ten years later the priory church became the Cathedral and the Kind created the diocese of Carlisle. The building is constructed of red sandstone. Celebrated architect Ivo de Raughton who lived a few miles south of Carlisle designed the intricate masonry. Many interesting features are recorded about Carlisle Cathedral in tourist brochures and its homepage, however they do not mention the many mason’s marks clearly visible on the stone columns inside the Cathedral. There have been hundreds of marks recorded, some being similar to those on the Yarrowee Channel in Ballarat. mason's marks, carlisle, cathedral, stonemasons, mason's marks -

Photograph - Colour, Dorothy Wickham, Monument in Town Square, Devizes, England, 2017
Devizes is a medieval market town in the centre of Wiltshire, 16 miles from Stonehenge and 8 miles from Avebury. The building of a castle in Norman times dictated the layout of the town which is still visible. It contains over 50 Heritage Plaques. There were people in Devizes locality in prehistoric times and a Roman villa once stood on The green. The Wiltshire Museum is home to one of the best Bronze Age collections in Britain and includes finds from around Stonehenge including the famous Bush Barrow gold. Some convicts that were tried at the Devizes Assizes were transported to Australia. Amongst these was John Chew, transported to Tasmania, but later his family settled in Victoria.devizes, bear hotel, staircase, window -

Photograph - Colour, Dorothy Wickham, Earth Banks, Old Sarum, England, 2016, 01 November 2016
William the Conqueror inherited Old Sarum from the last Saxon king of England. It was an ideal site for a royal castle. It was here in 1070 that William paid off his army after a long and bitter campaign in northern England. It was here in 1086 that he called together all the major landholders in England so they could swear allegiance to him. It was a crucial moment. The Domesday Book was being written, a threatened Viking invasion had only just been averted and William's eldest son was in armed rebellion. Old Sarum was an important place where this Norman king of England held power. In 1794 the Ordnance Survey set out to check the accuracy of the first mapping of Southern England, which had begun ten years earlier. From a point just below Old Sarum Lieutenant William Mudge laid out a base-line 36,574 feet (11,253 metres) long. From each end of the line the positions of distant places were plotted using a huge theodolite made in 1791 by Jesse Ramsden. The accuracy of the process, which was repeated all over England, depended on Jesse Ramsden's craftsmanship and on William Mudge's surveying skill in setting out this first base-line from Old Sarum. The nearer end of Mudge's line is marked by an inscribed stone beside the modern A345 at Old Sarum. King William devised the Domesday Book, considered to be the first listing of land owners in England. Among the names is that of D'Arques, from Normandy, France. Descendants of this family later emigrated from England and settled in Victoria, Australia under the surname 'Dark'. ordnance survey, william mudge, jesse ramsden, william the conqueror, old sarum, saxon, 1086, england -
