This jumper was worn by John Court as an employee of Orbost Shire Council. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council.Local governments play an important role in the lives of citizens in Australia. Local government authorities exist to provide services and amenities to local communities, and are also responsible for regulating and providing services for land and property in their district. The Fashion & Design collection of Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants' clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. While the collection includes some examples of international fashion, most items were handmade or purchased in Melbourne. Clothing. Navy blue, wool, fully lined blazer, presumably worn by a drum section member as the right sleeve has a cloth badge, embroidered with a drum. Long sleeves are elaborately decorated with red felt and gold braid, and finished with three gold plastic buttons bearing the impression of a laurel wreath, and horn as a replica of the British Light Infantry. Two splits on back - one on each side of centre back. Red felt with four peaked stripes of gold braid, on the lower right sleeve - possibly indicates rank of the drummer. Red felt epaulettes trimmed with gold braid and buttons (as above). Two false pocket flaps - one either side of front. Fully lined with a woven patterned taffeta. Sleeves lined with cream polyester (?) with a self stripe. A red felt tab on either side of front revere collar, bearing a metal Leidertafel badge on each tab. One inside pocket on right front. Two large (20.5 cm X 20.0cm) pockets, with rounded lower corners - one on either side front. 14 cm X 13 cm breast pocket with rounded corners of the lower edge, and embroidered Olympic Rings and wording ''Olympic Games 1956 Official''. Fully lined - body in black satin, sleeves in cream satin. Double breasted, with four 2cm diameter flat silver metal buttons. Stitched button holes. 1.5 cm diameter flat silver metal buttons - one at each wrist. Padded shoulders.On inside right hand breast pocket, Wardrop ''My Tailor'' of melbourne and provincial Centres. White embroidered cotton Christening gown. Eleven cm deep bodice with five vertical front neck to bodice and skirt seam, panels of embroidered cotton.Neckline has a casing with drawstring of cotton tape. Cap sleeves gathered at neckline edge, and outer edge trimmed with embroidered cotton. Skirt gathers to the bodice. Bodice also has a casing and drawstring tie, leaving a centre back opening from neck to skirt. Skirt is 84 cm long, and has an elaborately embroidered centre panel - full length. Two bands of embroidered cotton edge the centre panel. Embroidered "bobbles" similar to french knots extend full length beside the embroidered bands, and also form part of the embroidery on the bands. The gown was made by Merle's Grandmother for the christening of Merle's grandmother Geuer's son in 1885.costume, children's, christening gown
