The “Glengarry” beached at Marlo The schooner Glengarry was a well-known trader on the Gippsland coast and had been stranded on a number of previous occasions including at the Natural Entrance joining the Gippsland Lakes to Bass Strait – Ninety Mile Beach, Lakes Entrance, c 1877 . In May 1898, the vessel struck a submerged object while crossing the Snowy River bar at Marlo and was beached, eventually becoming a total loss. Until t he railway came to East Gippsland goods were shipped from Marlo to Melbourne. This is a pictorial record of a well-known trading ship involved in that river transport.Three copies of a black / white photograph of the Schooner Glengarry wrecked in 1891 at the Snowy River entrance at Marlo.schooner-glengarry shipping transport-orbost -

An early black and white photograph taken near the entrance gatehouse to "The Hermitage" at Narbethong in Victoria. An early black and white photograph taken near the entrance gatehouse to "The Hermitage" at Narbethong in Victoria. "The Hermitage" was built by photographer John William Lindt as a home and guesthouse in 1894. John Lindt had previously photographed the mountain scenery of the Black Spur and purchased 71 acres and subseqently built his home and guesthouse from where he continued his career. "The Hermitage had a garden designed by John Lindt's friend, Ferdinand von Mueller, who was at one stage the Director of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens. The garden featured New Guinea tree houses from which John Lindt made frequent panoramas of his property and the surrounding forest of towering mountain ash. Aged 81 Lindt died of heart failure during disastrous bushfires on 19 February 1926 at the Hermitage. He was survived by his wife Catherine who continued to run ‘The Hermitage’ guest house before she retired to the city.the hermitage, john william lindt, narbethong, victoria, black spur, ferdinand von mueller, melbourne botanic gardens, new guinea, catherine lindt -

Photograph, Cato Park -- Ornately Decorated Entrance -- 2 Photos -- Coloured
Two colour photo of Cato Park ornamental entrance gate that replaced the old entrance gates in c 1930's. The new entrance gates were donated by Mr. Frederick Cato and the park renamed from Victoria Park to Cato Park. The coat of Arms over the entrance gate was donated to Stawell Borough Council in 1926 by Mr. P. Whelan a native of Stawell. Mr. Whelan or better known as "Whelan the wrecker" demolished more than a quarter of central Melbourne buildings so new buildings could be erected on the old sites. The coat of arms came from "Burke & Wills Building" that once stood on the corner of Russell & Collins Street Melbourne. Two colour photographs of Cato Park ornamental entrance gate. Both photos are of similar views with the lake in the background and rotunda behind the gate. The main difference between the two photos is the colour of the rotunda roof, one red the other green. Judging by the increase in tree growth and pathway under the entrance gate the photo with the green rotunda roof must be the more recent photograph. stawell
