Basal Area Angle Gauge
Foresters usually measure the diameter of trees at Breast Height – traditionally 4 foot, 6 inches – now 1.3 m – which is termed Diameter Breast Height Over Bark (DBHOB). Basal Area is the cross section of the tree trunk at breast height, and the sum for the stand or group of trees is expressed square feet per acre (after 1973 it was expressed in square metres per hectare). Lots of skinny trees, or a few fat ones, can have the same Basal Area, but when combined with the number of stems, Basal Area is a good indicator of stand density. Two common methods are used to measure of Basal Area – fixed area plots and angle count sampling. 1. Fixed area plots require setting out a small area, commonly 50 m x 20 m, and measuring all the trees at breast height, and doing some quick sums. 2. Angle count sampling involves a simple sweep of the forest from a fixed sampling point using a relascope, dendrometer sight, angle gauge, or glass wedge prism. This wooden builders ruler has been shaped at one end to create a shallow angle (usually less than 3 degrees). Standing in one spot, a sweep is made with the wedge held to the eye, and trees are counted as either “in” or “out”. The number of trees is multiplied by conversion factor of the wedge (10 in this case) to estimate basal area. It’s very quick and effective.Basal Area Angle Gauge The two ends fold up and one end (on the right) has been reduced in width to create a shallow angle for the viewer Home made by cutting down a wooden builder's ruler Many forestry students made their own Basal Area Angle Gauges and its thought this may be oneforest measurement, forests commission victoria (fcv) -

Trophy, E. G. Morris Shield, 1921
Edgar Gordon Morris was a prominent sportsman in Bacchus Marsh from around 1909 to 1918. He was regarded as the best all-round cricketer in the district and was also Secretary of the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. He was also a playing member of local football and tennis clubs. From about 1919 to 1921 Morris had been living in Swan Hill. His death at the age of 35 was reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express on the 5th March 1921 and was received with great sadness in sporting circles in Bacchus Marsh and district. To perpetuate his memory a shield to be presented to the premiership team each season in the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. The E.G. MOrris Shield was first presented for the 1921-1922 season. This item is of historical significance because it is associated with a particular person, Edgar Morris, a prominent sportsman and sports administrator in the Bacchus Marsh area. It is of comparative significance because it is representative of a shield design for a perpetual sporting trophy. The Shield also provides some research value by preserving and commemorating the memory of a prominent individual sports person in the Bacchus Marsh area.A silver plated shield created to perpetuate the memory of E. G. Morris. Enclosed inside a timber frame and sealed with a glass top. The shield is ringed by smaller shields with inscriptions identifying the premiership winning teams in the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association between 1921 and 1930.The E. G. Toolern Vale and Coimadai are small communities near Bacchus Marsh and Melton. The two small communities combined to form an Australian Rules football club around the early 1920s. The club name appears in the Bacchus Marsh and Melton local newspapers during football seasons between 1924 and 1930. In 1928 the club were premiers in the Junior division of the local football association. The Junior division was not an under age competition but a lower level competition than the main or senior level local competition. Toolern Vale-Coimadai defeated Darley by nine points in the 1928 Grand Final. A very detailed report of the premiership game was published in Bacchus Marsh Express on 1st September 1928, page 4. This image appears to be a rare example of a photograph of a football team representing the Toolern Vale-Coimadai district. It is an import documentary record of football in a small community. A black and white photograph print mounted on mounting board, showing a group of 24 men arranged in three rows along side a grandstand. Eighteen men are in football guernseys, six in civilian clothes. Board and print are split top to bottom, and a small part of the image is missing due to a tear. At bottom of photo: 'Toolern Vale J.F.B Club' and written in dark ink and barely legible is '& Coimadai' On the reverse in pencil: 'Premiers; A. Document - TYPEWRITTEN ACCOUNT OF JOH MCCAVISTON'S WONDERFUL ESCAPE FROM THE HUSTLERS REEF MINE, 1873
Typewritten 10-page account of ''John McCaviston's Wonderful Escape'' (from the Hustlers Reef mine, 1873). Detailed story of shift boss, M'Caviston who descended into the flooding mine to warn workers below (who had actually left somewhat before) and who was himself trapped. The water in the shaft rose to a much higher level but M'Caviston was saved by being able to take refuge in a drive that had a 'stulling' (a mound of stones under a raised portion of the drive - allowing for an amount of trapped air). The account concludes as follows: ''The preservation of his life was discussed from a scientific point of view, and diverse opinions were expressed, and doubts (sic)'' (there is no page 11). No date on this document; handwritten on front page is ''The Flooded Mine'' ''By G Mackay'' (Occasional handwritten notations to text)document, names of bendigo pioneers, bendigo goldfields -

Photograph - Fred Rochow Railways Collection - Shunting at Shelley Station, 1961
The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. Shelley Railway Station - Shelley was once Victoria's highest railway station, located 781 metres above sea level. The Shelley Railway Station was opened in 1916 and closed in 1979. The railway was used early in its life to transport farmer’s livestock from the Upper Murray to Wodonga. From the 1950s the railway was used heavily to transport equipment and machinery from Wodonga to the Upper Murray to help build the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme. The Snowy Hydro Scheme was completed in 1974 and after several years of low level use, the railway was closed. Some remnants of the Shelley Station passenger platform can still be seen today, along with some information boards. The Shelley Railway Station now forms part of the High Country Rail Trail. This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Left to Right: Fireman Bert Cadman, Driver Wally Riley, Guard Hugh Fraser. Locomotive S300 - the ‘Matthew Flinders’ The S class diesel locomotives were built by Clyde Engineering in 1957 for the Victorian Railways. Designed as premier express passenger diesels, they assumed the ‘S class’ title from a fleet of steam locomotives. They were also given names of famous Australians. The S300 took the name ‘Matthew Flinders’. In 1962, S300 was converted from the Victorian broad gauge of 5’3” to the New South Wales gauge of 4’8.5”, in order to operate the new Southern Aurora between Sydney & Melbourne. As the locomotive grew older it was removed from these duties and was sold to Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia (CFCLA) in 2004. It is now owned by a private owner and is on loan to the Canberra Railway Museum.railways wodonga, fred rochow, wodonga railwaymen, s class locomotive -

Eric was born on 11 August 1906. He started cleaning with the Victorian Railways on 26 November 1926. Eric passed his Driver qualification on 1 December 1943. "Heavy Harry" - H220 was the only locomotive constructed in this class. The H class is the largest locomotive built to operate on the Victorian Railways. He was built at Newport in 1941 as the first of three mighty locomotives to haul the Overland Express to Adelaide, each to take the place of two ordinary locomotives. H220 entered service on 7 February 1941. Known as “Heavy Harry”, he never fulfilled his destiny, because bridges and tracks were not strong enough to carry his 260 tons (with tender). The war put an end to plans to strengthen the line and to build the other two locomotives. As a result, the locomotive spent its entire service life on the Northeast line as this was the only other line on which it could operate. It was used mainly on fast goods trains with an occasional run on an express passenger train and typically completed five return trips a week between Melbourne and Wodonga, covering around 1,875 miles per week. H220 continued in service until it was withdrawn for an overhaul on 20 May 1956. H220 was stored rather than overhauled, and never returned to service. It was written off the VR locomotive register on 30 April 1958. and was put on display in the Newport Railway Museum in 1962. In April 2008, 50 years after its official withdrawal from service, H220 was added to the Victorian Heritage Register. railways wodonga, fred rochow, wodonga railwaymen, locomotive h220, "heavy harry", eric molloy -

Scrapbook Album, The Colour and Texture of Eltham, 1997, 1997
Put together by a member of the Eltham Gateway Action Group (EGAG) in participation with various artists, writers, local business people and other local citizens and sent to Minister Maclellan, Planning Minister in the Kennet Government in protest of proposed plans to sell the former Eltham Shire Office site at 895 Main Road Eltham in order to develop a Shell Service Station and Hungry Jacks fast food outlet. The purpose was to express what is unique about the character of Eltham, why people live and work there and why such a development would be out of character and inappropriate for the Eltham Gateway along with alternative development proposals. This protest was the catalyst for the formation of the Eltham Gateway Action Group, which later evolved into the Eltham Community Action Group (ECAG).Scrapbook album approx 40 x 30 x 4 cm, black hardcovers and 36 double page openings, numerous blank pages.alan marshall, alistair knox park, alistair knox, alternative proposals, ampitheatre, artists, betty langley, bohdan kucyk, bootmakers cottage, bridge street, cultural heritage map, david armfield, diamond creek, diamnond valley news, eltham art house theatres, eltham community action group, ecag, eltham gateway action group, egag, eltham library, eltham traders, eltham, flavour of eltham, george stebbing, gordon ford, hamish knox, helen lucas, hungry jacks, janet r boddy, jarrold cottage, jarrold family, john pizzey, jon weaving, lena skipper, letters, local business register, 895 main road, main road, eltham shire office, matcham skipper, ming mackay, minister maclellan, montsalvat, mudbrick, newspaper clippings, peter dougherty, peter glass, pioneers and painters, railway line, shell service station, shelltham, protests, shillinglaw cottage, shire of eltham, nillumbik shire, st margaret's anglican church, todaro, trestle bridge, wingrove cottage, charles symons wingrove -

Sculpture - Public Artwork, Akio Makigawa, Point to Sky by Akio Makigawa, 1999
Point to Sky is one of Akio Makigawa’s final works, the commission was completed posthumously. It is the only public artwork by the celebrated Australian-Japanese sculptor of this scale located in regional Victoria. You will see two stainless steel forms, a smaller more rectangle form and the towering geometric form, with seed pod shapes at the peak. These forms represent the house, the artist is expressing that home is a shelter and also a place for gathering. The house form grows into a tower to symbolise the achievements of mankind and the action taken to protect the rights of the community during the Eureka Stockade. The top seed pod is gold, referencing Ballarat as the centre of the gold rush in Victoria, as well as representing the sun as the source of life. The paving of the forecourt was designed in bluestone, typical of the work of Makigawa. Stainless steel panelling and shaping on armature. Set into raised platform of bluestone pavers.Point to Sky, 1999 / Akio Makigawa (1948-1999)/ stainless steel/ Born in Japan, Akio Makigawa arrived in Australia in 1974. Work on paper - Paintings, Academy of Science, Canberra
The Shine Dome is one of seven projects that the Royal Australian Institute of Architects has nominated to the World Register of Significant Twentieth Century Architecture. In 1956 six architects were invited to submit plans for the Academy of Science's new building in Canberra and the Academy's building design committee selected Grounds Romberg and Boyd's proposal designed by Roy Grounds. It features a shallow arcaded concrete dome, sheeted in copper and was one of a number of domed buildings that appeared around this time internationally, expressing the optimism of the post-war years. It perfectly reflected the Academy's ambition to champion excellence in Australian science and promote international scientific engagement. Paul Wallace, a well-known Melbourne renderer, drew this perspective of the proposed design, possibly for the competition submission, in 1956.Coloured perspective of the Academy of Science buiding in Canberra.Printed text on attached sticker, 'ACADEMY OF SCIENCE, CANBERRA / 1958 / Grounds, Romberg and Boyd, / Architects'.
