Diary of Walter Leslie Clark's experiences in World War 1. Begins with his embarkation from Port Melbourne in 1917. Sample : Example: ' we arrived at our destination Port Said and disembarked on a grate warf crowded with wood and produce, and also a huge quality of munitions of war of almost every size, slowly the troops ahead of us filled on board the ship that was desgined to bear us on another stage of our journey' (sic). Pair of matching shirt fronts 11400.602 Pair of identical pieces if pintucked linen shirt fronts. Very fine white linen. Very soft. Centre tuck is 2.75cm wide and perfectly plain. This is bordered by a 2.75 panel of five groups of pintucks. Each group has a 1mm tuck and a 4mm tuck. The outside panel has twenty three 1mm tucks. A card handwritten by the donor Elsie Bailie reads: Dress shirt fronts hand sown by French nuns, brought to Australia by Rev George Thorne of St Saviour's C of E Serpentine. Two handwritten notes. Rectangular piece of heavy white paper. Handwritten in ink "Dress shirt fronts, hand sown by French nuns, brought to Australia by Rev. George Thorne, Stv Saviour's C of E, Serpentine." Left hand lower corner - probably a later addition "1230" Donor Elsie Bailie was born in 1895 and died in 1988. Rectangular piece of heavy white paper. Handwritten in ink "George V Lansell baby clothes. Purchased "Dendorah" Auction Donated by Josephine Bailie. Josephine was born in 1917 and died in 1983. The Desert Song" is an operetta based on the uprising of a Berber group against French Colonial rule in Morocco. The music was by Sigmund Romberg and the lyrics were a collaboration between Oscar Hammerstein II, Harbach and Mandel. Re Mr Henry Jones, gold buyer. Article by ''Joch'' from the Bendigo Advertiser Centenary of Bendigo Supplement, 1951. Half page typewritten copy of Bendigo Historical Society Newsletter. Sovereigns. The dollar in those days was worth approximately 4 shillings and 2 pence each. French, Spanish and Dutch etc coins were all exchanged, and cheques were cashed after banking hours at a moderate charge.
