The Gold Discovery centenary (1851-1951) monument in its original position in Albert St, Ballarat facing Sturt St, with the original public toilets behind. The monument features a replica of the Welcome Nugget, found in 1858 and the world's largest at that time. The monument also lists the weight of gold removed from the large "deep lead" mines, with a model of surface buildings of a mine sitting on top. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. It was disbanded following the end of the war. 20th Light Horse was the only light horse regiment to serve overseas in WWII.Rare copy of Regimental magazine produced while on overseas service, WW11Regimental magazine of the 20th Australian Motor Regiment ( AIF ) titled " Black and Gold " prepared and printed while posted at Merauke Dutch New Guinea 1944. Human Impacts on Australian Beaches was a landmark environmental study which provided a 'snapshot' of the health of 1612 beach areas around Australia. This nationwide study (which built on the success of the 1994 State of Our Surf Report) was put together by the Surfrider Foundation Australia with the support of more then 340 individuals and 70 organisations around Australia. The report was authored by surfer/environmentalist/artist Michael Legge-Wilkinson from Newcastle, New South Wales. Human Impacts was launched officially by Peter Garrett, leader of Australian rock band Midnight Oil at the Bondi Pavilion, Bondi Beach in May 1996.Human Impacts built on the success of the 1994 State Of Our Surf Report, released by the Surfrider Foundation Australia in 1994. Human Impacts was the first major report to specifically examine the environmental health of 1612 of Australia's beaches. A limited 500 copies of this report were produced, the majority of which went to education institutions, libraries, community groups and government departments. This surfboard was ridden by Australian surfer, Layne Beachley at competitions around the world for the 2003 ASP Professional World Surfing Tour. In 2003 Layne won her record sixth straight World Professional Surfing Championship. Layne would go on to win the word title for a record 7th time in 2006. Layne Beachley learned to surf at Manly Beach in Sydney. She is the first woman in the history of sport to win 7 professional world titles.The surfboard is of world significance. It was ridden by Layne Beachley, Australia's most successful competitive surfer, when she won her record sixth straight World Professional Surfing Championship in 2003.Layne Beachley surfboard shaped by Stuart D'Arcy in 2003. Situated at the end of Fraser Street, Diamond Creek. The Diamond Creek Gold Mine was the largest in the Diamond Valley Shire with a shaft depth of over 290 metres at the peak of its development in 1915. The surface plant was quite large with four boilers and five steam engines working the battery, winder, water pump, air compressor and lighting generator.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.'
