Black and white photograph mounted onto heavy cardboard. Image is an ESCo tram near the intersection of Doveton St. and Sturt St. travelling west along the south side of Sturt Street. Photo appears to be taken soon after opening of the electric trams, as the tramway is well paved compared to the rest of the street which shows vehicle tracks etc. Small horse drawn vehicle crossing in front of the photograph. Shows buildings along the north side of Sturt St. and the building at the SE corner of Doveton St. ESCo tram has destination board on the front dash of the tram. Book - 28 pages, colour covers with colour and black white photos titled "Ballarat's Heritage Tramway", Tells the story of the Ballarat Tramways and the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society. Written by W. F. Scott for the BTPS in 1993. Was an update of previous versions. Covers the history of the horse trams, the electrification by the Electric Supply Co. of Victoria, (ESCo) the takeover by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), closure in 1971, the formation of the BTPS and the operation of the tramway. Includes a list of the Museum tramcars at the time, details of the trams, many photos and a map of the system, depot layouts. Images of each page included in the image file. Photo appears to be taken soon after opening of the electric trams, as the tramway is well paved compared to the rest of the street which shows vehicle tracks etc. Small horse drawn vehicle crossing in front of the photograph. Shows buildings along the north side of Sturt St. and the building at the SE corner of Doveton St. ESCo tram has destination board on the front dash of the tram.Yields information about the appearance of Sturt St soon after the opening of the electric tram service in Ballarat.Printed colour postcard of an ESCo tram near the intersection of Doveton St. and Sturt St. travelling west along the south side of Sturt Street. Titled "Sturt Street, Ballarat" in the top left-hand corner and overprinted, embossed in gold, with the words "Christmas Greetings". On the rear of the postcard is a letter to Miss Hancock, Pitt St. Rockdale NSW, from a W.H. Nicholls. Message in pencil, address in ink. Postcard made by "WTP" Has a "Victoria One Penny" stamp. Does not appear to have been cancelled. Assumed used in 1905. On the rear of the second copy is a note to Miss Gibbs of Mole Creek Tasmania, dated 22/12/1907, sent from South Melbourne. See Reg. Functional Object - Tramcar component, Duncan and Fraser, Duncan and Fraser, Window lifter, 1887
Made by Duncan and Fraser for fitting to horse-drawn tramcars and possibly other products of their Adelaide workshops. See 565 and 8744 for other examples.Demonstrates Duncan and Fraser's workshop practice of putting their name on some fittings.Duncan and Fraser, Adelaide SA window lifter or bracket to enable a horse tram window to be lifted in the window frame. Cast brass, about 40mm in diameter with a right angle lug to enable a person to lift the window. Words "Duncan & Fraser" cast around the outside of the device and the words "Adelaide S.A." cast into the centre. Has been drilled with three countersunk holes. Has brown paint on the lifting portion. On the rear, possibly the letters "5L", scratched into the metal. If this is the case, could have indicated the fifth left hand window as an identification of location. Functional Object - Tramcar component, Duncan and Fraser, 1887?
Bell portion of a tramcar conductor's bell. Approximately. 100mm diameter, about 35mm deep with a raised or bossed hole at the top 4.5mm at the top. Bell possibly cast or pressed brass, appears to have been damaged or repaired due to excess brass in portion of the bell and on the underside where signs of brass welding are apparent. If from a horse tram, would have most likely been made by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide SA. Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, of Monday 20/9/1971, titled "Last trip by man who was on the first" in the Outlook profile Section of the newspaper about Mr. Charles Rollan who was a passenger on the last Sebastopol tram and rode on the horse trams on the Sebastopol line. Noted that a photo of Mr. Rollan was in the supplement Section of the newspaper. See Reg. Item 269. Mr. Rollan, 91, who was a compositor for the Evening Echo newspaper, retold stories about the horse tram days. One of a large group of newspaper cuttings from John Bainbridge, 7/4/02. Item has been folded for inclusion within a scrap book. Printed colour postcard of an ESCo tram west bound at the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard St. Ballarat, c1905. Has a number of horse drawn vehicles and pedestrians in the picture. Taken from the Post Office tower looking south west, with buildings on the south side of Sturt St., west of Lydiard St in the view. Has the Robert Burns statue in the bottom left hand corner. Titled "Sturt Street, Ballarat" along the bottom edge. On rear of postcard are the words "Post Card", and guidance where the message may be written and space for the address. In the stamp section, details for Inland 1/2d stamp needed, and for Foreign 1d. The first paragraph notes the visit to the premises, now a Bed & Breakfast known as "A Special Occasion". Black and white photograph of Ballarat No. 32 soon after arrival at the Lydiard St. terminus on 23/7/1961. Tram showing SPECIAL on a Victorian School Railway Clubs Association Tour (VSRCA). Photo taken by Dave Macartney. Date was shown as 25/7, but later corrected - 12/2006 Tram has Cinzano roof advertisements and advertisements for White Horse Whiskey and The Age newspaper on the front dash panel. In the background is the shelter at the terminus. Photo also shows the trolley pole pan placed at a terminus to assist with the location of the trolley pole at night. Ballarat Tramway Museum South Gardens Reserve Wendouree ...Copy of "Plaint Summons No. 39" lodged at the County Court, Ballarat May 1901, titled "Nankervis vs The Ballaarat Tramway Company Limited." Cost claimed was L100 (100 Pounds). Comprises: 1. Cover sheet, on pre printed form, filled out in light black ink and with pencil notations giving a sum of L28/9/6 and L30/0/0 (settlement figure?). Pinned with a brass clip to the cover sheet, which is in poor condition at edges is a handwritten sheet giving particulars of the demand and other details. 2. Copy of Interrogatories for the demands - three sheets of typed paper, pinned together to a typed cover sheet with a brass clip. Dated 15/4/1901 and signed by the W.E. Johnston, Deputy Judge. 3. Copy of handwritten statement by a person (a doctor?) who called on Mrs. Nankervis to assess her condition and circumstances - dated 28/3/1901. 4. Copy of handwritten letter from T. Anderson Robertson (Barrister and Solicitor) of Lydiard St. Ballarat, dated 27/2/1901 to the Chairman and Directors of the Ballarat Tramway Co. Ltd. advising them of the accident and seeking compensation. 5. Letter as for item 4, but dated 18/3/1901 detailing the accident and seeking L50. (50 pounds) settlement. - three separate sheets - handwritten letter. In the cataloguing sheet is an e-mail from Alan Bradley outlining how the documents were obtained.
