Document - Manuscript, Robin Boyd, New Life For Our Cities, 1965
Boyd asks "What sort of cities do we want?" Various alternatives were discussed at the 14th Royal Institute of Architects convention 1965. The theme of the convention was Civic Development, accompanied by a public exhibition "Man in the Street". A fairly clear definition of the ideal shape for our urban character emerged. It was accepted that congestion, dullness and ugliness would become even more of a problem. Boyd offers a bird's eye view of the nature of our cities as we move progressively outwards.Original manuscript of an article published as ‘New life for Cities. Book, Dawn A Lee, Daughter of two worlds, 2002
The biography of a Victorian Koori woman who traced her family lineage back to the first contact between Indigenous Victorians and the founder of Melbourne. Daughter of Two Worlds by Dawn Lee begins with a tragic affair between Eliza Batman, the wife of Melbourne pioneer John Batman, and William Willoughby, Batman's right-hand man and a pillar of Melbourne's early Wesleyan church. The book also unearths the remarkable truth behind a family legend that Dawn Lee's great grandfather was a mysterious white English lord who met her great grandmother, Susannah, a full tribal Gunditjmara woman.maps, b&w photographsgunditjmara, dawn a lee, aboriginal victorians, victorian history -

Photograph, Original would have been taken towards the end of Bulu's life in the early 1870s. The photo was dated "30 March 1933 THE ARGUS"
Joeli Bulu was one of the first missionaries to Fiji. Not a Christian when he grew up but was converted after listening to John Thomas in Tonga. The king of Tonga had just been converted to Christianity and asked for volunteers to go to Fiji as a missionary. His reception in Fiji was not welcoming, but he was such a tenacious chap and because he was likeable he became one of the most influential missionaries in the South Pacific. He was a rascal as a young man in Tonga and the meeting with John Thomas was the thing that changed his life. Very well regarded now in Fiji. His active period was the 1838 to 1870 - John Thomas came to Tonga in 1826. From Wikipedia: Joeli Bulu (Siaoeli Pulu) (around 1810-May 1877) became a Christian in 1833. He was one of a band of Tongan teachers who came to Fiji in 1838, and pioneered the work of the Christian Church in this group. He served the Church in Fiji for almost four decades. He came to Lakeba by canoe, and was appointed to help with the printing of catachisms and passages of Scripture. Lorimer Fison translated Bulu's oral account of hislife. This was edited by George Stringer Rowe and printed in England in 1871 with the title, "Joel Bulu: The Autobiography of a Native Minister in the South Seas". He served first at Lakeba and then at Rewa, and after that the station was closed because of the wars, at Viwa. John Hunt sent him to investigate the possibilities of establishing the work in Vanua Levu, and to that field he was later appointed. He was the first Pacific Islander to be placed alone in charge of a circuit - Ono, in 1848, and also the first to be ordained (1850) as a Native Assistant Missionary. After this he served at Nadi (Vaua Levu), Bua and Cakaudrove where he pioneered the work before any white missionaries were established there. Afterwards he was appointed to Bau. He died in May 1877 and his grave is beside that of John Hunt at Viwa Island.B&W photo, no backing, print from The Argus files, dated 30 March 1933. Ceramic (bowl): Alexandra COPELAND, Alexandra Copeland, Vanity, 1/9/1994
This bowl is part of a series completed in 1994 on the subject of the sin of 'Vanity' / A smug looking woman flirts coquettishly with a manservant who helps her to put on her shoes / The people depicted on the bowl are dressed in 18th century costumes / The court of Marie Antoinette of France is evoked / The blue and white drawing is in the style of 18th century woodblock prints and was drawn freehand / The bowl is signed and dated on the base / The technique is traditional tin glaze (majolica, maiolica or delft) / Coloured oxides were painted onto a clear glaze which had been opacified with tin oxide, and then fired at 900 degrees / The bowl was exhibited at Christine Abrahams Gallery, Melbourne in 1994 / A bowl from the 'Vanity' series is held in the Collection of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston, Tasmania. Copeland's parents are John and Betty Hipwell, one of the founding members of Potters Cottage (an influential ceramic collective that grew out of Nillumbik) / Copeland grew up surrounded by this artform. Reg Preston (another founding member of Potter's Cottage) introduced her to the Majolica technique which has influenced her ceramic work to this day / This bowl is characteristic of Copeland's speciality and mastery of the Majolica technique. This bowl is hand painted with an image of a couple flirting (man-left side and woman-centre) in 18th century French dress / Decorative circle and polka dot pattern along the rim and underside of the bowl / The bowl is predominantly painted in cobalt blue and orange colour using the Majolica (maiolica or delft) technique; a traditional tinglaze method of application. Coloured oxides are painted onto a clear glaze which has been opacified with tin oxide / The bowl is then fired at 900 degrees.Underside has in colbalt blue artist signature and date / 'A. Ceramic (plates): Alma SHANAHAN (b.1924 - d.2015 Melb.), Alma Shanahan, Horse Power - The Flip Side, c.1965
Alma Shanahan (1924-2015) was a Victorian potter who came to live at Clifton Pugh's Dunmoochin art colony at Cottlesbridge, on Melbourne's outskirts in 1953. Unable to join the co-operative proper, as she was a potter, not a painter, she built her house at the top of the hill, 135 Barreenong Road, Cottles Bridge. The c.1953 house is historically, aesthetically and architecturally significant because it is a good example of the design and ethos of mud brick dwellings synonymous with Eltham and features the extensive use of recycled materials, which was characteristic of the 'Eltham style' of architecture. Like the others in the artist community, Alma Shanahan built her own residence in stages out of local materials. Shanahan was later joined by neighbours and Dunmoochin potters Peter and Helen Laycock. She trained for a term with Peter Laycock but was otherwise self-taught, basing her practice on the teachings of Bernard Leach. After Pugh's death in 1991 she became the longest standing Dunmoochin resident. Her works are incised with her full name. Alma Shanahan was a part of the Dunmoochin Artist's community whose (other) members (Kevin Nolan, John Howley, John Olsen, Mirka Mora, Peter Laycock, Helen Laycock, Peter Wiseman and Chris Wiseman) made an important contribution to Victoria's cultural history. From the mid 1950s Pugh persuaded a number of other painters, as well as potters and other artists, to come and live at Dunmoochin and they formed one of Victoria's most important artist communities. She started potting around 1961 (aged 37). "Horse Power" was made using Chullora clay, which indicates it was made during her first seven years of production. Horse Power is about man's search for "energy" and how the "energy" can turn around. Made from Chullora (Sydney) clay. Glazed stoneware plates (x2) with brush decorations resting on hand made ceramic stands. Plate one: 2006.64.1VA (Horse Power + stand) shows a figure on horse back with blue foliage in background. Plate two: 2006.64.2VA (Flip Side + stand) shows a horse with figure under it's hooves.
