8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection
Document - Order of Service Wangaratta
A memorial rock was installed in the grounds of the army depot at Sisley Avenue in 2003 to commemorate the Charge at the Ney undertaken on 7 August 1915. When Victorian Mounted Rifles departed the depot there was uncertainty as to its future so the plaque was removed and lodged with the museum. The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The 8th Light Horse AIF was disbanded in 1919, but soon after re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. As Japanese threat to the mainland declined the regiment was disbanded. (From Glen Stuart). Photos taken from Centenary Bridge c1947. HMS Glory (inner East). HMS Implacable (outer East). HMS Indefatigable (outer West). Unknown freighter at Inner West. Ships still in wartime grey and used to transport personnel and equipment back to Australia after the war, before returning to England. PMHPS assume that these five photos (3354.01 - .05) were taken on the same day. See Glen Stuart's comment above. HMS Glory, Implacable and Indefatigable with attendant destroyers Tuscan and Armada arrived in Port Melbourne on 23 January 1946 and returned to England in 1947. [This series of photos 3354.01 - .05 as well as 3361 and 3362 came to PMHPS from the Moe Historical Society via the St Kilda Historical Society. Notations in pencil on the back along the left had edge indicate they came from "C W Ward photo, 355 High St, Prahran, Melbourne". Each photo bears the date 9-12-1947 in the top left corner. It is not known what this date refers to. Possibly it is when the photo was printed. Another notation on each photo says "Port Melbourne, taken in 1920". This is definitely incorrect and "NOT" has been written underneath this comment.]British aircraft carrier, HMS Glory (inner east) and unknown freighter (inner west) at Station Pier. Container - Box, HMAS Voyager, c1957
A gift to Ron Cochrane, a member of the Navy commissioning team of HMAS Voyager. The box was handmade by two brothers CLARK/E (?) from Benalla. The signatures done in ball point pen belonged to the crew attached to the portside Forward Mess. They presented the box to Cochrane who was responsible for the Mess as a token of appreciation. Ron Cochrane R46195 served as a Leading Hand with the Royal Australian Navy between 1951 and 1957 and served on numerous ships including HMAS Voyager between 6/2 - 6/10/1957. He was born on 20/3/1933 at Ballarat East. Daring class destroyer, Voyager, was the first ship of her class to enter Australian service, and the first all-welded ship to be built in Australia. During the night of 10 February 1964, Voyager and the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne collided off Jervis Bay, when the destroyer passed in front of the carrier during post-refit sea trials. Voyager was cut in two by the collision, sinking with the loss of 82 of the 314 people aboard. This was the largest loss of Australian military personnel in peacetime, and the subsequent investigations resulted in the holding of two Royal Commissions—the only time in Australian history this has occurred.Cream painted wooden box with metal hinges. There is an inscription and ship on the lid and autographs written in ink on the underside of the lid. On top of lid - HMAS Voyager 1957 On bottom: Bills, bills and more bills !!!!!!
