He was able to stay with one of the trustees and learn farming. At twenty one years, he took over the farm and the care and responsibilities of his three sisters. In 1892 he married Miss Louisa Ashcroft. They had six children: Dorothy Penrose, Allen Stephen Penrose, Clifton Horne Penrose, David Lindsay Penrose, Eleanor Weir Penrose and Norman William Penrose.
