This is the 14th edition of the magazine. This magazine belonged to William Hunter (1893-1971), a resident of Tatura and Mallacoota. He was a soldier, surveyor and amateur naturalist. Peter Dawson was a Distiller and Whisky Merchantat 99 Maxwell Street, Glasgow. By 1891 Dawson had already made a name for himself in the United Kingdom as a blender of whisky and practical distiller. This illuminated address was given to H.H.Smith, the Warrnambool Mayor, for his work with soldiers returning to Warrnambool and district during and after World War One. On the same occasion Smith was also given an armchair by the mothers, sisters and wives of Warrnambool returning soldiers. Henry Huntingdon Smith (1857-1941) started his own bakery business in 1885, firstly near the corner of Fairy and Koroit Streets and later building his own shop at the corner of Lava and Fairy Streets (Monaghans Pharmacy today). Smith was one of the most admired men in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century. He was a Warrnambool Councillor from 1918 to 1937 (Mayor for two terms) and served continuously on the Warrnambool Hospital Committee for 39 years. He visited patients at the Hospital twice a week. He took a particular interest in the welfare of returning soldiers and it was said that there was not a returned man or woman whom Smith did not greet on his return to the district. Smith also was a tireless worker for the Methodist Church as an office bearer and a Sunday School teacher. Smith was also Vice President in 1937 of the first Warrnambool & District Historical Society. This document is of particular interest as it is a good example of the type of illuminated address produced during the early years of the 20th century. It also shows clearly the respect and love that Warrnambool people had for Henry Smith, a great volunteer worker in the community. This is a piece of cream-coloured parchment paper with a margin ruled in black ink and handwriting in blue and black ink surrounded by red ornamental scrolls and flourishes. The paper has an address to H.H.Smith and is followed by 74 names and the date (1920). The paper is inserted into a piece of red leather cloth. This has folded edges and an ornamental gold pattern around the front edges and a gold border around the back edges. There are two holes at the top of the folder and these have metal surrounds. The backing folder is rounded at the top edges. ‘Warrnambool, 6th December 1919. To H.H. The Peter Lalor statue by Thomas Nelson McLean is said to be a striking likeness of Lalor who is remembered as the leader of the Eureka Rebellion. The artist has depicted Lalor’s missing arm which he lost in the Rebellion efforts on of 3rd December 1854 and 4 bronze relief panels depict major events in Lalor`s life including his involvement at Eureka and in Parliament, where he served as the Speaker of the House. The cast bronze statue stands at a grand scale of 3 meters high and is mounted on a pedestal of polished Aberdeen granite. The statue was gifted to the citizens of Ballarat by James Oddie, who founded a number of Ballarat institutions and was the first chairman of the municipality. It was unveiled by then Premier of Victoria Duncan Gillies on 26 January 1883 to a cheering crowd reported to be in the thousands. The commission cost £2,200. This booklet is a compilation by Carrol Preston, of photos and articles in various publications, principally the Snowy River Mail (published in Orbost). These articles relate to the loss of two Orbost young men, Simon Bommer aged 25, and Peter Savoury 27. On the 10 September 1967, these young men were last seen in a small boat at the Snowy River entrance, and were never seen again.This booklet is significant because is records most of the printed reports from 1967 of the deaths of two young men from the Orbost district who were lost in a boating accident near the mouth of the Snowy River. David Adam, pictured on the right with his wife, Judy, joined the International House Council in 1966, served on the Executive and Finance Committee in the 1970s, and became Chair of the Council from 1979 to 1986. Judy Adam served on the Ladies' Auxiliary throughout the period. Peter Bobeff, on the left of the image, was the resident law tutor at International House from 1965 to 1967, departing upon his marriage. He returned to serve on the Executive and Finance Committee in the 1970s and 1980s, and became Chair of the Council from 2001 to 2008. After the Eureka Stockade the government offered a reward for the leaders of the rebellion. Peter Lalor's name is incorrectly spelt 'Lawlor' in the poster, which suggests the correct pronunciation of Lalor.A Eureka Stockade reward poster as reproduced in Withers 'History of Ballarat'. McDonald Smith is famous for paining in the tradition of tonal impressionism, with most of his works painted in oil. This influence of the European Impressionist art style is clearly seen in his artwork Flower Study. The notion of light, an impressionist theme, is depicted by the use of a tonal colour palette and varied brushstrokes.
