Stawell Post Office on corner of Wimmera and Main Streets. Erected 1875. Phone box and car at right of photo. Directional sign on the left side of the building. The Fruit Vegs building on the right side has replaced the Akins building on the right side in an earlier photo.Black & white photograph of a two storey building built in 1875. Stawell Post office built in March 1875 replacing the 1860 weather board building in the early Township of Stawell. The stucco exterior was described as modern Italian, and the building had excellent proportions. Special reference was made to the use of slate from Great Western. The foundations are of solid granite. The difference in this photograph to 85.01 would be approximately 100 years. Stawell Post Office possibly before 1880's on Corner of Wimmera and Main Street. Stawell Post Office on corner of Wimmera and Main Streets. Erected 1875. Telegraph pole and streetlamp in foreground. Akins store visible at right of photo. The building has 3 arched doors & 6 arched windows on the ground floor and 8 square windows on the top story. Two chimneys on the roof and a wrought iron square fence on the roof. The outside of the building has not changed while the interior has been remodelled several times. The early Postmasters and their families lived upstairs. The main room originally included the Telegraph office where operators worked at machines, sending and receiving Morse code messages. Later alterations were made for a telephone switchboard room downstairs, with trunk line equipment upstairs. This stamp was made by C G Roeszear & Son Melbourne. This was passed to me by my mrother, Mary Elizabeth Millane Nee Markham. She told me that, for as long as she could remember - and from at least 1920 - this stamp had been used by her mother, Bertha Jane Markham (nee Cruse) when she was Post Mistress at Mitcham and that she, ( that is, my mother) had continued to use the stamp in her own shop (Cnr Station St and Whitehorse Rd) from 1944 to 1957. This stamp was used in Mitcham Post Office continually from 1920 to 1944 at which time the Post Office was removed from the building; it was then used in the shop at the same location until June 1957.Mrs Markham's Paid Brass stamp Wooden bull shaped handle attached to a brass oval shaped stamp with words PAID IN FULL Mrs Markham was postmistress at Mitcham.It was part of her shop & dwelling cr Whitehorse Road and Station Street.Building on WCC Heritage overlayPaid in fullmetalcraft, bronzeware
