(Arts and Culture) The variable quality of the original recordings has meant digitisation has not been possible for all interviews. Transcripts have been provided where possible.The series of oral history interviews (1983-1990) captured the memories of some active early members of the Portland Council for Encouragement of Music and the Arts. First hand memories of the formation of the organisation in 1945, early activities of its groups, fundraising and building of the CEMA Arts Centre provide a window into community life in Portland and District in the post WW2 era. ... post-war years. ithaca ww2 A foolscap size bound minute book ...The minute book is a record of the meetings of the Executive Committee of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society from July 1944 to April 1955. The minutes are written in Greek. The minutes recorded provide an insight into the decisions of the Executive Committee and philanthropic activities of the club and its activities within the Ithacan community in Melbourne during the closing years of World War II and the immediate post-war years. A foolscap size bound minute book with leather binding on the spine and brown leather corners. There is green cloth on the covers with blue marbled paper on the inside covers and white cotton tape reinforcing the inside of the cover. The pages on the outside edges are red. Number 3 has been written in black on the front and there are two white labels stuck on the front cover. ithaca, ww2 -

... to Australia many of the post WW2 Greek immigrants who settled ...On the right is Stathi Raftopoulos and his business partner Pangiotis (Peter) Giannoudis. The photograph, taken in Sydney in 1972, at a meeting of men involved in the Greek theatre/film industry. One of the men is a Mr. Heliopolis, a member of the Greek Heliopolis Theatre visiting Australia. Stathi Raftopoulos was active in promoting Greek film and live performances in Australia from the 1950s through to the 1970s. As a result of the efforts of Stathi Raftopoulos to bring Greek theatre and films to Australia many of the post WW2 Greek immigrants who settled in Australia were able to enjoy entertainment from Greece. Stathi was a partner in the Cosmopolitan Film company which had a number cinemas in the inner suburbs of Melbourne in the 19600s - early 1980s. Although they screened almost exclusively Greek films, they were the first to bring Indian films to Australia.A black and white photograph of seven men sitting around a table in a cafe. -

It was the period of post WW2 mass migration which saw many nationalities ...An advertising poster for the 1955 All Nations Festival which was presented by the Australia Red Cross Society, Victorian Branch. Nina and Olga Black participated in the festival and were featured on the poster (seated at front first and second from left) wearing Greek traditional costumes. Other recognisable national costumes are Scottish Piper and Dutch.The event held in 1955 by the Australian Red Cross promoted multicultural Australia and members of the Ithacan Philanthropic Club participated. It was the period of post WW2 mass migration which saw many nationalities making Australia their home.Photocopy of a poster for the 1955 All Nations Festival. Some villages were totally destroyed resulting in many people forced to relocate and a further wave of emigration to other countries, including Australia.Following the post WW2 migration from Ithaca, the earthquakes brought about yet another wave of migration from the island. It was the last most significant period of migration from the island.A black and white photograph of ruins caused by the earthquake which occurred in the Ionian Islands in 1953. -

Part of the Alfred Boland collection, refer Cat No 2473.Canvas "Square" bag with shoulder strap bypass buckle. Colour green/brown. Both sides have little pockets, kept shut with press studs. The top lid is kept shut with an American Pattern clip and post system. Inside the bag are two little pockets. The bottom 'Pocket' covers the drain hole. The photos were in a collection of George Henry Haw No 128091 RAAF, enlisted 0n 22.3 1943 age 30 years initially in 79 Sqd RAAF Laverton. His overseas service is listed as from 16.6.1943 to 1.10.1944 on Goodenough, Kiriwina and Los Negros Islands. Then Madang from 5.6.1945 to 22.10.1945. Other service was Townsville QLD. Discharged from the RAAF on 18.12.1945 with the rank of LAC in No 2 Medical Recieving Station. Los Negros is in the Admiralty Islands, Goodenough is north of Milne Bay and Kiriwina is in the Trobriand Islands north of Milne Bay.Five photographs B & W relating to RAAF service in the Islands; .1) Group photo showing 51 personnel with an Aircraft behind. .2) Group photo showing 39 personnel with an Aircraft behind. .3) Three personnel standing beside a post with distances to various places. Dorothy Woolcock's recording was damaged, but the full 1983 transcript and most of the audio have survived.
