A wide range of souvenirs have been produced to commemorate Wodonga and its landmarks over time. These items document key changes in Wodonga and its heritage. The Water Tower and Soldiers Memorial have been key landmarks in the centre of the main street. The Water Tower was in operation from 1924 until it ceased operation in 1959. The original Soldier Memorial was dedicated on Tuesday 18th November, 1924.Small china and glass pieces carrying scenic views of holiday destinations were a popular kind of souvenir during much of the 20th century. This photograph is from the Ivy Child album and shows a scene across the Kalorama Valley. The roof of the Kalorama Homestead is right of centre with cultivated areas around it. Walter Jeeves would have been the owner at this time. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. They can't fire too often as they are short of ammunition, they would get thousands here I suppose. The gun that does fire here has killed more than any other gun in the war. Box of Slate Pencils (Griffels), The Box, Early to Mid 20th Century
Slate pencils were used extensively in primary schools throughout The Netherlands.These pencils may have belonged to a child who attended school either towards the end of or post WWII when there was a scarcity of paper and books. Rectangular light green cardboard container which slides open to reveal 7 slate pencils. The lid is busily illustrated with scenes of English Victories on Sea and Land including Trafalgar and Waterloo. The upper halves of the slate pencils are covered in paper decorated with various designs.In the left margin of the picture are the words: "Designed in England". Underneath the Trafalgar scene is the quotation: "England expects that every man this day will do his duty." Under the Waterloo scene is the quotation: "Up Guards and at them!" In the right margin are the words: Copyright ENT * STAT HALL. GES.GESCHUTZT. In the centre are the words The Box enclose a crown surmounting a coat of arms which in its turn surmounts crossed slate pencils, then the words SLATE PENCILS and Made in Germany. In pale ink the name Harold is written above the picture. education -

This watercolour painting depicts a scene at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, showing some of the buildings and one of the vessels in the lake. The artist, Alfred A. Perry, lived in Victoria at the time of creating this painting. This painting is significant for its association with Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. It shows a point in time, September 22nd, 1979, at which time the Ship's Chandler store was on the north of the lake. In 2022 the Ship's Chandler' is on the south of the lake and has been there for many years..Painting behind glass, framed in wood, black outline with watercolour. Depicting a scene of vessel at anchor on water, crane on wharf, buildings on track, valley and hills in background. Location is Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. In 1960, the University's Student Representative Council produced a thirty minute colour film called 'Don't Send Your Daughter', designed to showcase the activities of first year students ("freshers") for high school students and their parents. The film starred Susan Stone and Christopher Carr as "two typical freshers", and some scenes were shot at International House, with the film played for a University audience in September 1960. Tin Biscuit/Tea, Early to mid 1900s
This biscuit/tea caddy was probably targeting the "theatre going" family or those who liked looking at the colourful shakespearian scenes. This item however demonstrates that the rural (Kiewa Valley) appreciation of classic English plays was, in this time period (early 1900's), just as strong as in the larger towns and cities. This item also presents the period in which the "olde" Elizabethian phrases and words were taught in regional high schools. Although this speech pattern and phraseology was of a specific time period and going out of fashion when Australia was first settled it was an inherited form of communication(higher social/economical level). In the context of the rural Australia "scene" and in this time frame of the elite "boarding school" generation this item was a visual reinforcement of the education level and position of the family who owned this tin.This item is highly significant because it not only presents the social aspects of early life in the Kiewa Valley but also the variety of educational levels and economical variations of the rural population within the Kiewa Valley. The egalitarian perception of the inhabitants of the Kiewa Valley was still at the infancy of early Australian social interactions. This biscuit /tea container was however a leveling of the socio-economic playing field of the time.This biscuit or tea tin, has besides having an outer lid (hinged), it also has an internal lid(with a circular finger grip). Although the shape is rectangular it has a slight concave bulge at each side of the centre of each of its main frame. It is made of pressed light steel and has a raised floor. The corners are bevelled and the outer lid has a bevelled slope ridge in parallel to the extremities of the main tin frame. There are painted scenes from the following Shakespearian plays on each side of the tin; "As you like it", "Hamlet" and on each of the bevelled corners are the portraits of Shakespeare(in the middle), the caricature mask faces of "the theatre" above and on the bottom section the "Director's chair"food storage, kitchen table container, domestic educational storage, shakespeare illustrations -
