School or Class ...This card was presented to George Davidson when he passed the Junior School examination held by St. John's Tonic Sol-Fa Association in 1877. The Tonic Sol-Fa was a technique used for teaching sight singing, invented in the 18th century and further developed, popularised and used extensively by singing teachers in the 19th century. The St. John's Tonic Sol-Fa Association was an extension of the choir of St. John's Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool and the conductor (and the teacher whose name is on this card) was T. L.Campbell. He was a well-known singing and music teacher in Warrnambool in the second half of the 19th century and specialized in the teaching of the viola, violin and violincello. George Davidson (1860-1941) was the son of John and Isobel Davidson, pioneer settlers in the Warrnambool district. This card is of some interest as a memento of the music scene in Warrnambool in the second half of the 19th century with references to T.L. Campbell, a music teacher, George Davidson, a pupil and a school of music, St. John's Tonic Sol-Fa AssociationThis is a small white card with a blue scroll border and blue printing on one side and printed information on the other side. The card has handwritten details in ink. It is stained, torn at one edge and has signs of silverfish damage.Tonic Sol-Fa Method of Teaching to Sing - Mr George Davidson has passed the examination for the Junior School Certificate. School, Warrandyte showing various teachers and students ...Photos include: Log building which the students constructed and used as a co-operative shop, Primary Class, Science class outside their classroom, Government meeting held in the outdoor theatre, Janet and Lawrence Nield. "Koornung School, Warrandyte was established by Clive and Janet Blake Nield in 1939, after they had visited progressive schools in Europe and America. They believed children should be given freedom to grow while learning to accept responsibility; that school should be a miniature democracy and education not a preparation for life but experience of life itself. A government of children and all staff (whatever their jobs in the school) met regularly, made the rules and dealt out punishment for breaking them. The few rules set down by staff related to health and safety, for instance, no pupils were allowed to go into the river without supervision. The school could not have been started at a worse time. Food rationing and coupons, petrol shortages and men at war limiting teaching staff made difficulties. It was an expensive school to run. Financial difficulties became more serious and eventually the school had to close in 1946. Efforts by the children and a Board of Management of notable people failed to save it. Janet Nield (M.A., Dip Ed.) was an inspired teacher of history. She was one of the few women at Melbourne University at that time to gain a Masters degree in history. The Nields left Melbourne to live in Sydney, Clive to work at Sydney University in lecturing in Education and particularly interested in Colombo Plan students. Janet devoted herself to children as a Lay Analyst. She was awarded the title of Training Analyst by a meeting of international psychoanalysts in Europe. - Pat Scott (Mrs Wynne Scott), a former member of staff at Koornung School Collection of five black and white photographs a, letter and descriptive material relating to Koornong School, Warrandyte showing various teachers and students and Connie and Alec Smith's studio.schools, koornong, warrandyte, danila vassilieff, lorna carter, adrian rawlins, teachers, janet nield, clive nield -

Painting - Portrait of William Abendigo Thompson, c 1890
... ? That knocks me out! Who’s your board school teacher? What’s he about... your board school teacher? What’s he about? Chock a block ...William Abendigo Thompson was English bare-knuckle boxer born in Nottingham, 1811- 1880 and whose name is (allegedly) borne by the City of Greater Bendigo. One of 21 children he started fighting aged 18 and began prizefighting aged 21. His career spanned from 1832–50, and is said to have lost only one fight. Later in life, after spending time in prison he became a Methodist evangelist preacher. While the artist and date of production of this work are unknown the initials JJLh (or n?) are just legible lower right on canvas. Other clues for an approximate date of creation include the similarity in composition of this painting to a popular aquatint of Bendigo by Charles Hunt Senior (1803 - 77). Based on the markings on the back of the canvas for Rowney and Co and the address given, we can ascertain that the canvas itself was manufactured between 1884 - 1896. The painting also includes an extract of the Conan Doyle poem 'Bendigo's Sermon' which was written in 1911. Given these three factors, a date for the painting can be surmised as post 1911. Stretched made by George Rowney’s is one of very few artists’ supply businesses with origins in the 18th century still trading today, as Daler-Rowney, albeit no longer in family hands. The business has been a significant supplier of canvases and panels from the 1810s. ... Creed, Miss Boes a dressmaker and O'Doherty the Catholic school... and O'Doherty the Catholic school teacher. In 1874 Dr Rastrick ...The land was bought in 1853 by John Smith and he built the house. The house was offered for sale in 1866 when George Barnacle bought it and named it 'Warwick Cottage' after his birth place. it was offered to short term tenants such as the surveyor Creed, Miss Boes a dressmaker and O'Doherty the Catholic school teacher. In 1874 Dr Rastrick was a tenant and in 1878 it was occupied by the grocer William Searle and his sister a dressmaker. Barnacle offered the cottage for sale in October 1885 advising that the iron roofed stone cottage , 4rooms, detached kitchen and outhouses had been previously occupied by W.C.Uncles and at that time William Muhleg Carpenter. It ultimately sold privately to Miss Beatty and she continued to rent it to tenants. James Kilbride was the tenant in 1887-88. The cottage was sold in 1888 to Isaac Smale. The house continued its tradition of housing dressmakers with Mrs Barby carrying on that profession in the 1940's,50's and 60's.
