This water wheel was located on the Steavenson River in Marysville. Barton's Store was established by Thomas John Barton in 1864. Thomas John Barton was born in 1836 in Gloucestershire and after his father died in 1850 arrived in Melbourne in 1852 along with his mother, adult sisters, younger brothers, his uncle, his uncle's wife Suzanna and their family. Thomas tried gold mining at Woods Point but found it too difficult. He then partnered with Ewen Hugh Cameron to provide the miners with meat. In 1864 they purchased a plot of land in Marysville and set up a butchers/abattoirs and from there began their business of taking supplies to the miners at the nearby Woods Point and Jamieson goldfields. In 1865 the business was firmly established and Thomas married Selina Croker at Heidelberg and brought her back to Marysville. Their first home was 'The Chestnuts', which included the store, and was situated on the town side next to the Steavenson River. Sadly, in 1876 Selina died of complications after giving birth to their sixth child. Thomas was in need of a nanny to care for his six children, including the newborn baby, and so he employed Emily Ada Sparke, who is the eldest daughter of the local school teacher. Thomas and Emily subsequently marry in 1878 and they go on to have a further 10 children over the next several years. Thomas assisted in the establishment of the first school in Marysville in 1870 and remained a very active member of the community including as a Councillor for the Shire of Healesville, Shire President and he was also appointed as a Justice of the Peace. Thomas died in Carlton in 1911. After their father's death, his sons Fred and Frank took over the family business, which was then known as Barton Bros Store which continued to operate until sometime in the 1970's. John Herman Muller No 1102 enlisted in 8th reinforcements 8th L.H Regt on 2.7.15 age 22 years, embarked for Gallipoli 20.8.1915, hospital with Mumps 25.10.15, return to unit 17.11.1915, embark for Alexandria 25.12.1915, hospital 16.9.1916 with Tonsilitis, WIA 19.4.1917 GSW to chest, left leg & arm, hospital 28.11.1917 with Diarrheoa, hospital 1.9.1918 (unclear), promoted T/Sgt 13.3.1919, discharged from the AIF 9.12.1919. Edgar Percy Muller No 3227 enlisted in 26th reinforcements 8th L.H.Regt on 9.11.1916 age 18 years 7 months. Attended Signal School 10.11.1916 to 14.2.1917, embarked for Egypt 20.2.1917, hospital 26.6.1917 with Debility, return to unit, WIA 1.12.1917 GSW to Chest, return to unit 9.1.1918, hospital 4.6.1918 with Malaria, return to unit 31.7.1918, hospital again 9.8.1918 (appears to be Malaria severe), return to unit 29.10.1918, discharged from the AIF 20.10.1919.Memorial Book Australia's Roll of Honour 1914 - 1916. Possibly produced as one of a series of photographic post cards of various areas of the Mission especially of the Chapel in the pre-war WW2 period of the 20th century. There are several such cards in the MTSV Collection. The Chapel, opened in 1917, was a special fundraising project of the Ladies Harbour Light Guild and was originally dedicated as a Memorial Chapel in remembrance of those who served in the Merchant Navy of WWI. The Chapel is still used for marriages, baptisms,funerals and memorial services, and is often referred to as St Peter's, the Mariners' Chapel. Photographic postcards were produced soon after the new 1917 Mission to Seamen building was first opened. Available to supporters and visiting seafarers alike, effectively promoting the Mission and the role it played in ensuring both spiritual and pastoral care available to seamen and shipping to and from Australia.
