.1) On rear: 10 days furlough to England. I left the trenches on the 22nd Dec and arrived in England on the 27th and left again on the 6th Jan for the Somme. I had a Bon Time. This fits in with James Archibald TODD No 2418 AIF. By his records this was 1917 - 1918 leave. Refer Cat No 1340P for his service details. .2) On rear: France 2.6.18. Research shows the person in photo is Chas Thomas CASSIDY No 3800 9th Reinforcements 22nd BN AIF. Enlisted 22.7.1915 aged 20. Embarked 8.2.1916. The photos were in a collection of other cards and photos that were related to “Lena RICHARDSON” (.1) Believed to be "Harold Stanley RUFF" No 621, enlisted on 20.7.1915 in B Coy 29th Bn AIF age 20 years, embarked for for Egypt 10.11.1915, transferred to A.A.O.Corp, returned to Aust in1919. (.2) Believed to be "Reginald HART", (born Bendigo), No 4512, enlisted 7.7.1915 in the 14th reinforcements 6th Bn AIF age 18 years, embarked 28.1.1916, KIA 19.8.1916. The date on the card is approx one month different from actual. (.3) Believed to be "Reginald Bruce DAVIS" No 4471, enlisted 13.7.1915 in the 14th reinforcements 7th Bn AIF age 18 years, embarked 28.1.1916, transferred to the 57th Bn, returned to Aust 2.1.1919. Both letters to “Lena” are from Tom WATT. As well as his signature someone has written his name as in blue pen. One letter is just signed “Tom” the other “Gunner T H Watt”. It is believed this is "Thomas Henry WATT", born Bendigo. He had pre war service in the 67th Bn Senior Cadets, no dates given. Regt No 3670 shows he enlisted on 20th or 28th Dec 1915 in the 8th reinforcements 21st Bn age 20 years. It shows he embarked just 9 days or 1 day later on 29.12.1915. He transfers to the 60th then 57th Bn and then on 17.3.1916 5th Div Artillery. he is mustered as “Gunner” and transfers to 5th DIV DAC (Ammunition Column) on 25.5.1916. (.1) The letter is dated Dec 7.12.1915 two weeks or so prior to enlistment dates. The end of the letter talks about being sick and possibly missing going with the next draft. There are 3 other sketchy records showing enlisted 12.7.1915, 5th DAC 15.7.1915, AWL Bendigo 4.11.1915. This would fit in better than enlisting and embarking in not much more than a week. Tom married Margaret McCALL in Scotland 25.4.1919 prior to coming home. Letter content, “Dear Marjorie, This is a picture of the ship I was taken to when wounded. I am now in hospital and doing well. I was very lucky to get of so light. Sgt Major English and Sheehan were both wounded. I will write more as soon as I can use my right hand, Love to all from Chas”. Chas is, Charles Bowmont Taylor MC, No 99 A Coy 5th Batt AIF - 57th Batt AIF, WIA 25.4.1915 GSW to right hand. Sheehan is believed to be, Edward Robert Sheehan No 97 A Coy 5th Batt AIF, WIA 25.4.1915 BW to Knee (Bullet wound). He was WIA 3 times altogether. English is believed to be John Graham English No 51 A Coy 5th Batt AIF, WIA 25.4.1915 GSW to left foot. He was WIA once more. Refer also 4206.2. Photo print of the Hospital Ship HMHS “Gascon”.
