Bendigo Weekly from Friday, September 8, 2000. Article by James Lerk ''Discover Bendigo, Bendigo Arcade's fiery farewell''. This well known Bendigo landmark was lost through attrition and fire. At 10.30 pm on October 3, 1974, smoke was seen coming from the arcade building. Miss O'Shannessy, the owner of the baby wear shop had switched on a heater that accidentally ignited some of the shop's contents. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Pall Mall: Sandhurst circa 1860s. In January, 1865, land in Pall Mall sold for 90 pounds per foot. In 1867, the Duke of Edinburgh visited the town. The Prince Albert Hall was erected next to the town hall for the Prince's visit. Unfortunately, the hall burnt down just hours before his arrival. A torchlight procession to mark the occasion saw the model of 'Galatea', manned by four boys, aged about eight, catch fire and result in the death of three people. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. The Apothecary's: the residence and surgery of Dr. J. McIntyre Eadie. Lured by gold fever in 1852, John McIntyre came to Bendigo from Scotland. In 1855 he married Jean Grant (sister of Dr. James Eadie) and immediately formed a partnership with Eadie to establish an apothecary (chemist) shop at View Point, Sandhurst. James Eadie had arrived at the diggings in 1854 from Scotland. The partnership was dissolved in 1869, yet Dr. Eadie continued his work as a surgeon until 1897. Michael Gabriel Giudice (1882-8/12/1947) was the son of Baptista and Rosa (nee Lang). In 1907 he married Beatrice Annie Harvey. Michael is listed as an agent and in 1931 is living at 451 Hargreaves St., Bendigo with his wife Beatrice.Black and white photograph mounted on rectangular grey board. This is a Bible with a heavily embossed cover with pressed gold panels featuring gold lettering , scroll patterns and images of Biblical scenes and saints. The spine has scroll patterns and gold lettering. Inside the front cover the spine has been reinforced with blue adhesive tape. The spine and the front pages are partly detached. The pages are gilt-edged and contain printed text and black and white and colour illustrations and a handwritten name in black ink. The Kiewa Valley Rifle Club belonged to the Australian Rifle Clubs. They were in Military District No. 304 and operated as early as the 1920's. In 1876, an Australian Rifle Team, consisting of shooters from N.S.W. and Victoria, was the first team ever to officially represent Australia in any sport in international competition. In 1885, the first civilian Rifle Club was formed. After 1901 Rifle Clubs came under army control. In 1921, they were reconstituted as a purely civilian organisation where they have remained ever since.This letter is evidence that the Kiewa Valley Rifle Club existed in 1946 enabling its members to participate in a sport that had 12232 members and 313 Rifle Clubs in Victoria by 1939.Letter- Dated: May 9th 1946 from Acting Secretary, A. William George Gray was born in Hazel Glen in 1869 and grew up at "Cleir Hills", Queenstown. He was the son of George Gray and Elizabeth Gray, nee Edwards (1843-1901). He married Frances Hurst in 1897. William and Frances would settle in Hurstbridge and operate Allwood Nurseries. He was also a Councilor for the Shire of Eltham. 1912-1919, serving one term as President. George and Frances children were Hurst, Sylvia, Clarice, George and Sheila. He died in November 1942, aged 73. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' W Stephens operated a foundry in south Melbourne around 1900 the company made many cast iron architectural and domestic items that were decorative in design and used in the building industry of the time. Stephens Excelsior Foundry specialised in making decorative cast iron balustrades and brackets with intricate lacework used on verandas in the late Victorian period found in Australian homes. The company also made many other items of cast iron including fire grates down to wheel barrow wheels as their 1901 and 1908 catalogues describe. A domestic item made by one of Melbourne's early foundries that specialised in making decorative architectural cast iron items of all types that can be seen in many building still in use today throughout Australia.Fire grate cast iron with four legs and back support. Commonwealth Federation Memorial unveiled 1903 corner of Lower Main St and Barnes Street Stawell. The memorial commemorates the Federation of the Australian States into the Commonwealth of Australia on the 1st January 1901. The memorial cost 100 pounds and has a foundation supporting 4 columns of Scottish rose granite. The base & caps of these columns are of black marble. Around the tops of the columns are the names of the six States. George Robson and George Gray, Stawell's monumental masons who carried out the work were also thought to be responsible for the design. The first Mt Dandenong State School opened in a shed on the property of William Ferguson on the corner of Blythe and Old Coach Roads. The first teacher was Miss Ethel Gruber who opened the school on May 11th, 1897. It wasn’t until 1901 that the school shifted over the road into an old school building that was moved up to the new site from Ringwood. All the old buildings were demolished to make way for a new school that opened in 1991. There are many old, European trees that were planted in the grounds during Arbor Days.
