Amy Elizabeth Porritt was born on the 21st of March 1915 on Atkinson Road, Beechworth to Thomas Frederick Rodan and Maud Isabel Dowling. Her family had strong associations with Australia's oldest continuously operating newspaper, the Ovens and Murray. Both her grandfather and father worked on this newspaper and played a significant role in continuing its operation. Amy was well-known in the Beechworth community and is remembered fondly for her generosity and her love of cats ‘they are all I live for’ she would often say. She was an avid gardener and had a beautiful garden at 47 Finch Street. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke. Miss Amy Elizabeth Porrit's account of her life in Beechworth and the local area during the 20th century is historically and socially significant to the cultural heritage of the region. She details important historical events and hardships in the region's history that had a lasting local, regional and national impact, including Australia during war time, economic struggles, and women's societal roles in a rural area. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' Mr Jack Tully was born in 1927 in Box Hill Doncaster to Irish decedents. The youngest of three children, one brother and two sisters, Jack and his family took after the family orchard after his father died. After years of running the business side of the orchard Jack moved to Beechworth in 1957 purchasing an orchard and becoming a grower. Jack grew mainly apples in his orchard creating job opportunities for locals and elevating his worth in town. He speaks highly of Beechworth; he is a valued and respected member of society. He enjoyed a round of tennis with his wife. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. Desmond was born in 1931 in Beechworth but left at age 11 (in 1944) to be educated in Melbourne at Scotch College but returned to the town for holidays and when he was finished with school. Desmond is the son of Raymond Zwar who was 1 of the 3 brothers who owned the Tannery in Beechworth. He worked there when he was 19 for a year in 1950, when the first Baltic migrants came to town. In 1951, Desmond left Beechworth to work in Albury for a newspaper called the "Border Mail" before moving to Melbourne to write for the "Melbourne Herald". He was later known for becoming a writer, having produced 17 books under his name at the time of the interview. Prior to 1901, sailing pilot cruising cutters were "Boomerang", "Corsair", "Anonyma", "Proserpine", "Rip", "Mavis" and "Hawk". In 1901 the pilots took delivery of their first steam powered pilot cutter, "Victoria", 46 metres in length, built at Williamstown. "Victoria" was followed by "Alvina", "Akuna", "Akuna II" and in 1953, "Wyuna", a twin-screw diesel electric pilot cutter 63 metres long. "Wyuna" served until November 1979 and was then sold to the new Nautical College at Launceston for use as a training ship. The system for getting pilots on and off ships at sea was for the ship to stop dead in the water with the wind and sea broad on the beam. George Burnett Barton (1836-1901), lawyer, journalist and historian, was born on 9 December 1836 in Sydney. He practised journalism rather than law for which he had qualified in 1860. This is Volume 1 and covers the proposals for colonising New South Wales, the transportation and the early years of Governor Phillip.This is a detailed history of New South Wales compiled from original records and is a very useful research tool.A hard cover 625 pp book with a dark brown cover. John (Jack) Joseph Hogan was the son of Cornelius Hogan and his wife Bidella Dillon and was born in Birchip in 1898. He married Kathleen Bridget Kell in 1920. Kathleen was the daughter of Martin and Bridget Kelly and was born in Kalpienung (35km from Wycheproof) in 1901. The Old Post Office Store was established in 1850 at 191-193 Main Street Bacchus Marsh. In 1863 Thomas Taubman was the house and store owner and storekeeper. In 1866 he opened a branch of the Savings Bank at these premises. In 1876, he left the district. He died in 1901 as the result of a train accident at Moreland.Post Offices are an essential service in any community particularly in the nineteenth century when mail services were the main means for personal and commercial communication over distances. This image is one of the earliest images of a post office in Bacchus Marsh and is therefore an important documentary record of early postal services in the Bacchus Marsh area.This image is of a photographic copy of an original photo. Shown is a double-fronted store and Post Office in two sections , with a group of six men standing at the front. The building appears to be of weatherboard, with shingled roofs. Built in different styles, the two buildings may date from different periods. The buildings are unified by a single verandah supported by seven pillars along the front of the store. A sign erected between two of the pillars reads T. Taubman. On the brickwork a sign reads POST OFFICE above a number of noticeboards. Various items can be seen at the front of the store.
