Geoff Grant's notes on the envelope that contained the negative - says that this was the first tram to run on the Bourke St. route. In 1944,45 or 46 Friday 24 Jan did not occur - see attached calendar sheet - a perpetual calendar of the Internet 1/97 but would have occurred during 1947. Possibly left over stock from previous three years being finished off? Sample length (260mm long) of 107mm2 trolley wire supplied by Metal Manufacturers (Port Kembla Wire and Rod) - November 1996, Used in ceremony of 26/11/1996 when Victorian Minister of Transport, Alan Brown handed over the Trolley Wire (2km) to Museum. Worn piece of old trolley wire (330mm long) of 89mm2 (?) cad copper wire. Taken from an old wire joiner within depot to be used as a sample of worn wire for use in ceremony of new trolley wire hand over on 26/11/96, when Victorian Minister of Transport, Alan Brown handed over new Trolley wire (2km) to Museum. Black & White photograph of 16 ESCo tramway staff in front of the Grenville St. shelter at the east end of Sturt St. Photo taken before shelter moved in August 1923. On door behind standing staff is visible part of word "traffic" Personnel in uniform, though with varying shirts, jackets and some caps. On far right of photograph, is H.P.James, with words "dad" written in ink at his feet. Photo mounted onto card with black paper, photograph has rounded corners, card is depressed to receive photograph and then a rectangular depression around the photograph again. Certificate, John Phillips, BTPS Driver's Certificate, mid 1980's
BTPS Tram Drivers Certificate printed on fawn stippled paper with brown ink printing and BTPS Tram loco on left BTM corner. Stamped No. 1 and dated as issued to Driver Gavin Young on 22/12/74. Signed by R.Gilbert Traffic Manager. These certificates were printed in the mid 1980's and backdated to when the driver's passed their exams. On the reverse side there is no printing and it is a white sheet of paper. Note: Used for driver's certificates until the BTPS was renamed to the BTM, then a new type issued. Functional Object - Trolley Wire Sample, Trolley Ear
Short ear (3 screw) with worn trolley wire bent at either end. Ear - brass, with clamp on fitting used to hold trolley wire in position and steel bolt, steel spring washer. Trolley wire cut about 40mm on either side. One side has pulled out of ear - has no groove on one side. Shows how ear has worn while in service. Screws could not be removed while attached to wire. Piece of worn trolley wire (copper, probably cadmium copper) taken from north bound trolley wire between poles 9 and 17 (Loop and St. Aidans Drive) on 4/3/1997 during replacement operations. Is badly worn on one side. OK on the other side - slightly curve with worn side on the outside of the curve. Green (Oxidized) and sides, dark brown on top. Has been cut at either end. Has been stamped for Dave Kellett's traffic number.Piece of chrome plated steel rod bent at 90 degrees and shaped at longer end to give a square shape for use in external doors on SECV Ballarat Trams - known as a square key. Was used to secure doors in both open and closed positions. Has been stamped 67 on one side at short end.
