Programme, Invitation and Programme for the Naming Ceremony South Wing of the Education Building T Ian Gordon, 1995
Ian Gordon played a prominent part in both the development of the Mt Helen Campus and in the progress the Institution made prior to becoming a University on 01 January 1994; In 1973 he was appointed President of the Council of hte newly created State College of Victorian at Ballarat (SCVB) which absorbed the former Ballarat Teachers' College. As President, he led the merger of the SCVB with Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (BIAE), the tertiary division of the School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat. Out of the merger the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE) was established on 01 July 1976. Ian Gordon, a partner in the Ballarat law firm Heinz and Gordon, became the first Vice-President of the new Council and was involved with the plan to transfer the former SCVB to the Mt Helen site. In June 1981, Ian Gordon became President of the Council of BCAE and held that position until June 1989. He remained a member of the Council of the BCAE (later Ballarat University College) unti l31 December 1993, the eve of the creation of the University of Ballarat. He was the only person to remain a member of the BCAE and the BUC Councils for the whole of their existence. Thomas Crouch Watts was born on March 7th. 1865, to Joseph and Susan Watts. Before the real estate business commenced, Thomas and his brother were in partnership as booksellers and stationers in a shop at View Point. Thomas lived in a fine house in Rowan Street, which was called 'Ottawa' Thomas started his real estate business in the early 1900s in a shop in View Street. His daughter Edna was the book keeper and typist, Stewart Watson was the salesman and Stanley Phipps (Edith Lunn's father) was the property manager and valuer. When Thomas Watts died in 1914, his daughter took over the running of the business. She married Stewart Watson in 1918. Eventually the name of the business was changed to Bishop and Earl. From a letter from Edith Lunn re T.C. Watts & Son. 'The firm of T.C. Watts & Son later became Bishop and Earl. When the firm of Bishop and Earl ceased to operate after the death of Edith Lunn's father, S.P. Bishop, Miss. June Parry, Secretary of the BHS was a member of staff. June rescued all the photos of properties listed for sale from the office and placed them into the custody of the BHS.' Black and white original photograph mounted on grey board. 3163 Pte W J Smith enlisted in to the AIF on 29 September 1915 and embarked from Fremantle on the Argylishire. On arrival Pte Smith was take on strength to Pioneer Training Battalion and was then transferred to 5 Pioneer Battalion. Pt Smith returned to Australia on the Berrima and arrived on 02 January 1919, was discharged on 22 March 1919.This Victory Medal is the original that was issued to 3163 Pte W J Smith.Victory Medal. K class locos were first built in the 1920's This one was built in 1941 and was the 20th loco to be built. It entered service on the 28th/7/1941 and was withdrawn from service on the 1/10/1970. It is believed to have travelled a total of 421,708 miles or 674,733 km during its 29 year working life.This is a K class steam locomotive, No. 169. Wheel configuration: 2-8-0, gauge: 5'3" (1600mm) The K 169 was the 20th (of 53) to be built. It is black in colour with red pin stripping down the side.K169 in white lettering on the sides and the front. -
