Max COWARD ( -1991) Born Ballarat Max Coward was training to be an art teacher at the Ballarat Technical Art School from 1937 to 1941. He enlisted in the A.I.F. and was a Naval Trainee at Flinders Naval Depot in 1941. During these years Max Coward was described as a cartoonist and illustrator, and was was attached to the Naval Intelligence Division in 1945, producing stories and drawings for the Navy newspaper Dit. His work was reproduced in the Christmas annual, HMAS Mk IV and the Army educational journal, Salt. He was a foundation staff member at the Burwood Teachers' College art department when it opened at Box Hill in 1954, transferring to the Burwood Campus in 1955. Upon his retirement he moved to Queensland to start a graphic arts consultancy. Coward was active as a printmaker during the 1970s. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Framed limited edition linocut by Max Coward. 'Hen Party' uses simplified forms reminiscent of the shapes gracing 'moderne' interiors of the 1950s and 1960s. The simplification of form and decorative pattern achieved through repetition shows the influence of Paul Klee's work and imagery. lls 'Hen Party' lower centre edition '8/28' lrs 'Max Coward 64' art, artwork, max coward, printmaking, alumni, hens, linoprint, linocut -

Work on paper, 'Sun and Moon Nature' by Kees Hos, 1964
Kees HOS In 1956 Kees and his wife Tina made a new life with their two children in the arts community of New Zealand. In Australia Kees established the art school at Gippsland College of Advanced Education in 1971 with a radical multidisciplinary approach to art education. He generously delivered encouragement and opportunities to many people including lecturers, visiting artists and students. His small team literally built an art school from zero. Temporary accommodation in an old factory and service station in Morwell moved to three student-built studios on the Gippsland Campus. His highest recognition was 1997 when the names of Kees and Albertine Hos were added to the Wall of Honour in the Garden of the Righteous at Yad Vasheem in Jerusalem along with many others who put their lives on the line against the biggest killing machine the world had known. The ‘hiding-place’ in Kees and Tina’s home was discovered but Tina managed to rescue a baby as her own while the Jewish parents were transported to Auschwitz and Dachau. Kees was on the run using his printmaking skills to forge passports but was eventually captured and jailed, the war’s end saving his life. Manual, Post Master General's Department, Postmen's Manual, 1964
When the Commonwealth Post and Telegraph Act was passed in June 1902, and a national Postmaster General's Department (the PMG) was established the responsibility for the nation's mail and telephone services fell on Post Offices. The Bendigo Post Office, built in 1887 and situated on Pall Mall was the central distribution centre for receiving and delivering telegrams and continued to deliver communication and postal services until 1997. Now a Visitor Centre, dedicated volunteers at the Post Office continued to demonstrate and educate the public about the daily workings of the Post Office up until 2019 when Covid 19 disrupted every day life and Ted Rankins, the last Post Master and a long term telegraph volunteer at the Post Office, died. Manuals were issued to postmen to guide them in the delivery of letters and parcels and were small enough to be carried with them. This manual was used by the Bendigo Post Office postmen and is part of the postal collection donated by the Rankins family in memory of Ted Rankins,. Small, creamed coloured cloth covered manual. Contains forty four printed pages and two blank end pages covering all aspects of how to correctly deliver the post. Topics include 'Behaviour', 'Deceased Persons' and 'Bicycles' amongst many others. Book is bound and contains many extra additional paragraphs stuck in on appropriate pages noting changes and amendments. Additional amendments in handwritten red pen also occur on pages 28, 29 and 36.Front cover; Postmen's Manual / Australian Post Office Various annotations and updates throughout. ted rankins collection, bendigo post office, bendigo tourism, city of greater bendigo tourism, post office collection -

Book, Maria Edgeworth, Castle Rackrent, 1964
With her satire on Anglo-Irish landlords in Castle Rackrent (1800), Maria Edgeworth pioneered the regional novel and inspired Sir Walter Scott's Waverley (1814). Politically risky, stylistically innovative, and wonderfully entertaining, the novel changes the focus of conflict in Ireland from religion to class, and boldly predicts the rise of the Irish Catholic bourgeoisie.Bib, notes, p.127.fictionWith her satire on Anglo-Irish landlords in Castle Rackrent (1800), Maria Edgeworth pioneered the regional novel and inspired Sir Walter Scott's Waverley (1814). City of Kingston
Photograph - Black and white, 27 February 1964
Cheltenham is a suburb in the City of Kingston that was originally established as a rural market gardening community. The area is bordered by Highett. The previous market gardens, farms and paddocks have gradually been sub-divided into housing and industrial estates. The Methodist Children's Home Methodist Homes for Children and St John of God Training Centre on the site of the future Southland shopping centre has not yet been demolished. The recently built Cheltenham High School is visible and the increased urbansation of the area is evident. Some farmland remains including the Le Page homestead. The developing urban area of Cheltenham within the City of Kingston. Document - Report, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), "Tram changeovers for 12 months 1-7-63 to 30-6-64", 1964
Details the numbers of tram defects by type due to a variety of causes by depots. Allows for analysis of the reasons and possible solutions. Note the numbers for "soiled" trams - probably someone was sick on the tram (drunk), and collisions - not just minor scrapes. Gives the mileages per defect and overall miles per defect. Signed Ken Hall, Works Manager. Yields information about the background for change over of operational trams by depot.Foolscap duplicated sheet detailing "Tram changeovers for 12 months 1-7-63 to 30-6-64" - Form No. R229tramcars, tramways, mmtb, depots, safety, running sheds, defects, accidents, failures, mileages
