Trench Art is the name given to objects manufactured by both soldiers and civilians from shell casings, bullets, shrapnel and miscellaneous battlefield debris, and is predominantly associated with World War I (1914 – 18). The most common material used for trench art are brass shell casings, which, once decorated, can be utilised as vases. Often items will bear an inscription such as the name of a French village or theatre of war and engraved decoration or embossing. Western Aranda artist, Gerhard Inkamala. Born in 1917, Gerhard was the nephew of Albert Namatjira and grew up being inspired by his artwork and the surrounding landscapes. He became a skilled artist and during the 1940s was one of the founders of the famous Hermannsburg School of Art. In the 1950s Gerhard and his brother Adolf were included in a group exhibition in Alice Springs at the home of Rex Battarbee who was the Warrnambool-born art teacher of Albert Namatjira. In 2001 a People Scape display took place on the lawns of the Federal Parliament in Canberra. Prior to the event communities across Australia were invited to nominate people who had made a contribution to their local area to be presented as decorated cut-outs and displayed at that event. Sunbury community selected five people and contacted the local art group to create the collages.
