Newspaper clipping, titled "Want Provincial Trams Retained" re deputation of Provincial tramway employees waiting upon Government - notes trolley buses. Refers to Mr. H.H.Bell (M&MTB) and Mr. Kent Hughes as "Minister for Transport". VR to 62 gives K. Hughes as Minister for transport from 20/3/1935 to 1/4/1935. Was Minister for Railways 25/7/1934 to 20/3/1935 and 11/1947 to 10/1949. Reference to the Bell report dates cutting Sept./Oct. 1949. Record revised and image added 21/9/2013. Significant in being a detailed set of instructions for parking trams, hand overs, relief, responsibility for the security of the tram, including leaving the tram unattended. Regrettable incidents have happened. Issued 1961. Reg item 3459 has a more detailed set of instructions.Single foolscap sheet titled "Special Order to Motormen (49/1)" giving instructions regarding 1) Responsibility (for trams), 2) Relief on the road, 3) Controller key, 4) Air brake handle, 5) leaving tram unattended. Demonstrates aspects of the SEC governance system in issuing By-laws for the travelling public, as part of their Act. Yields information about fares charged for tram services in Ballarat and Bendigo. Issued to crews.Booklet with orange card cover and 12 pages, numbered 1 to 10, side stapled, off set printed giving details of fares, revised in June 1963 for both Ballarat and Bendigo, to come into force on 1/8/1963. Has details of sections etc. Was shown as being approved by the Governor in Council on 25/6/1963. Adjust the City Section fares only. See Alan Bradley notes in references re this. Full pdf copy added 28/5/2019. Alan Bradley advised 25/4/2005. In the "Courier" of 26/6/1963, the adjustments to fares from 1/8/1963 were announced. They were only for adjustments to city section fares. Fares outside the city area remained unchanged. The SEC promoted these as being cheaper city section fares. Tom Evans gave me a copy of a poster showing a Scotsman boarding a tram. The caption was: "Now! It's cheaper to travel by tram! Beats walking every time!" New economy city fares. Certificate, The Herald Learn to Swim Campaign, 1963
The Victorian Government's policy was that primary school children should learn to swim.The children of Chatham Primary School were taken by tram to the Kew Baths. The certificate testifies that Gail Norman could swim 25 yards. The Herald Learn to Swim Campaign was founded in 1929. Paper certificate printed in shades of blue and white. The document has the name of the campaign and the promoter at top centre. Other information includes the name of the person to whom the certificate was awarded and the distance swum. Journal - Hilary Bennet Mason's History of Charles Street, Surrey Hills
Hilary Bennet Mason (born 25/12/1911 in North Melbourne; died 16/3/2008) married Olive Marjory Muridge (B 20/7/1915; D 26/9/2001) on 30 September 1940. They has one daughter, born in 1947. Hilary had a number of occupations in his lifetime. His daughter referred to him as a tram conductor. The family lived at 7 Charles Street, Surrey Hills from c1960, having purchased it from William Stanton (Stan) Philp, a baker, and his wife Eileen. The title originally extended over 2 plots. The Philps sub-divided the land and built a new house for themselves at No 9. No 7 Charles Street had a well under the kitchen window; the house was extended in 1971/72; it was sold after Hilary Mason died in 2011. [REF: Personal communication from the donor; Alan Holt property register and online research.] The handwritten timeline refers to the area having been "called Irish Town as Catholic's were in the majority." Most of the writing is that of Hilary Mason, although some blanks have been filled in by another (unknown) hand. There is also an entry by John Whitford, who moved into a new home on the corner of Charles and Arthur Streets in 1982. The last entry is dated June 1996, when Hilary Mason would have been c 85 years old.This is a unique piece of social history reflecting the closeness of this small suburban street.A standard lined exercise book, brand is HEADLINE, which contains a mixture of handwritten entries and pasted in and loose ephemeral items. These include house advertising flyers, newspaper clippings of a general nature and death notices, tickets, etc. The handwritten notes mostly pertain to a timeline of residents and their comings and goings to and from Charles Street in Surrey Hills, but also include some reflections on social history. Memories of other residents of the street are recorded. There are also some personal diary notes.Front cover: "begun october 1987 / History of / Charles street / Surrey Hills / History of Charles st. 1989 / 1996 / 1995 / 1993 1991 1990 / History 1987" in biro and marking pen in blue, red, brown and green. Uniform - Badge, Stokes and Sons, mid 1910's
Pressed metal uniform badge for the Melbourne Tramways Board, workshop staff, available all lines. Round pressed steel badge with the words "All Lines" pressed into the badge around the top portion of the badge, the word "Car Works" and number "25" pressed into the lower half of the badge -with small horizontal lines within the individual letters. Has a brass finish with the Melbourne Tramways Board logo in the lower part of the badge. On rear badge two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a leather strap with a button hole cut into to enable it to be worn on a uniform. Leather strap secured with wire. Used possibly from mid 1910's when the Board was formed until it was replaced by the MMTB in 1921. Printed form on off white paper titled "M&MTB Conductor's Pay in slip", form number 3/135, dated March 1972. Enabled the conductors to record what amount they paid into the revenue office, with space for table number, name, out fit number, amounts, number of swimming tickets and signature of revenue clerk. Light purple cloth covered bound book, 48 pages "MMTB Electric Tramways and Motor Omnibuses Sections and Fares", dated April 1940. Though dated prior to the closure of the cable tram routes does not include cable tram routes. Book consists of one section, bound with sewn cloth binding on the outside with glued white paper end covers. April 1940 Details the various section stages and fares for each tram and bus route, General instructions, concession fares. 2nd copy added 5/5/2019 from donation of Barry Brooks ex Bob Prentice Collection. Manila folder, Wotan flat file, with built in fold back metal clips (see images 19 and 20) holding 9 plastic sheets that have been made to hold railway (Edmondson pasteboard) or tramway paper tickets. Sheet 1 - 25 No. MMTB tickets, ranging from 3d to 2/6 and two decimal conversion tickets, including 5 tickets which have been overstamped "City Section". On the rear are adverts for Blind Babies (Royal Victorian Institute for the blind), John Randle hair salon, Leighton home builders and the Promote Thomastown Committee. Sheet 2 - 25 No. MMTB tickets - decimal currency - two conversion tickets and other decimal currency tickets ranging from 6c to 25c. Included are 6 overstamped City Section tickets. Sheet 3 - 25 No. MMTB decimal currency tickets - ranging from 25c to $1 with one ticket overstamped "City Section". Includes one ticket with a red P overstamp. Sheet 4 - 22 No. MMTB tickets - 13 tickets overstamp P, for Pensioner, one bus transfer ticket, 3 non-cash tickets, one city concession tickets and four machine issued bus tickets. Sheet 5 - small sheet with four pockets with three tickets, - MMTB 1981 single journal ticket, MMTB day tripper $2 and MMTB bus ticket. Sheet 6 - 13 No. MMTB Section tickets, hospital travel, Australia post, incapacitated soldier and special police department concession. Sheet 7 - 8 MTA paper tram tickets and 9 The Met paper tram tickets. Sheet 8 - 23 Ballarat or Bendigo tickets, both pence and decimal currency including 6 BTM or BTPS tickets. Sheet 9 - 10 VR motor coach tickets, both pence and decimal and one single ticket - East Kew to East Camberwell. Set of four clothed backed paper ticket, printed as a MMTB "Scholar's Yearly Concession Ticket", for Juniors. Gives condition of use on the outside cover. Each issued to Roderick Atkins. Each lists the various terms for which they were available and available from Cotham and Glenferrie Road, to Callantinia Road, Scotch College.
