Snow shoes were used to move between places on the snow fields at Falls Creek and the Bogong High Plains especially during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Scheme.Historical: Snow shoes were used on the Bogong High Plains during winter. The body is made of light wood 'bamboo' with a back and front wooden cross bar. Between the front cross bar and toe, blue nylon is tied to form diamonds 'lacing', similarly the back. Between the bars, in the middle is cream coloured rope tied to form a strong basket. A shoe harness made of olive green vinyl to which is clipped brown strong woven material tape with a circular steel loop through which the tape is threaded. There are 3 steel fasteners on 1 side and 2 on the other with a black plastic fastener. At the front between the cream and blue woven baskets there is a gap called the toe hole. Cigerette case given by Dame Nellie Melba to John Charles Hughes. Mr Hughes was responsibile for maintaining and tuning her piano while on tour in the USA and AustraliaJohn Charles Hughes was born in 1882 of Scotish- Irish ancestry . He was a graduate of the New England Conservatory od Boston where he studied classical music and piano. In 1926 John Charles Hughes' wife died of cancer leaving a daughter Dorothy (who is the wife of the donor). He was unable to continue his work after the death of his wife and after a bout of alcoholism disappeared and was never seen again. Silver cigarette case with textured horizontal lines on outside surface and engraved monogram in centre. Hinged lid and clasp at one end. Ballarat artist and educator Geoff Wallis took a series of photographs of Ballarat Milk Bars in the 1970s. This is one of his favourites. He notes: “My ‘local’ is not the pub that stands on a corner only 100 metres from my home but the milk bar that is across the road from the pub in Peel Street North. It is an extraordinary example of the milk bar fulfilling its time-honoured role of being every suburb or town’s Aladdin’s Cave. It is well worth a visit. I photographed this milk bar in 1979 when it was a much more conventional shop and then continued on taking photographs of all the milk bars I could locate around Ballarat. The photographs were to be the starting point for an artistic project but this didn’t eventuate. Though my motivation was primarily artistic I was also interested in milk bars as familiar and essential parts of daily life. Their accoutrements of Peters Ice Cream cones, newspaper headlines, and colourful signage made them distinctive features of the townscape. Milk bars had been part of my life from when I first was sent to ‘the shop’ as a little boy clutching a ration card. My parents bought a milk bar in Camberwell when I was nine and though I only lived there for a year, it is still vivid in my mind. Lollies, comics, ice cream, milkshakes -- all the treasures essential for a happy childhood -- awaited any child who pushed through the door. Phillip Dresher (1823-1906), was born in Germany and emigrated to Ireland before coming to Australia in 1852. He was married to Margaret Cosgrove. After Phillip died his son John Thomas (1873-1919) took over the business. John Thomas was also a watchman for the fire brigade.black and white photograph.
