The writer and novelist Frank Hardy spent most of his childhood and early adulthood in Bacchus Marsh. This collection of short stories is inspired by his early years in the town of Bacchus Marsh in the 1930s. The collection contains 13 stories. Many of the these stories depict the poverty and struggles of working class people during the great economic depression of the 1930s. The setting is fictionalized as 'Benson's Valley' but to anyone familiar with the town Bacchus Marsh this location is clearly the setting for these stories and some of the characters are based upon Bacchus Marsh people Hardy knew at the time.Printed book. The writer and novelist Frank Hardy spent most of his childhood and early adulthood in Bacchus Marsh. Hardy wrote numerous works of fiction and non-fiction in his lifetime. His most famous work is the 1950 novel, 'Power Without Glory'. A short story collection titled 'Legends from Benson's Valley, published in 1963 is loosely based upon his early lifetime memories of living in Bacchus Marsh during the 1930s. Hardy was was an active member of the Communist Party of Australia for most of his life. He tried unsuccessfully on two occasions to be elected to the Federal Parliament as a representative of the Communist party. Hardy died in North Carlton, Melbourne in 1994 aged 76. This work is a collection of critical essays about Hardy's work and life by several different writers and critics. It also includes a posthumously published essay by Hardy and Dave Nadel's 'key to Power Without Glory'.Printed book. Paperback. 291 pages. Pages 1-32 missing. Escape is a body of work by Taungurung/Filipino artist Alan Stewart made during Melbourne’s long lockdown to reflect his longing to connect to country. “Country has always been my escape and connection to my culture. Without it, I lost a sense of self and a way to revitalise my spirit. Those early mornings and long drives helped me to see what’s special about being on country, land that holds such a deep meaning to my ancestors. I look back now and realise how lucky I was.” - Alan Stewart Artist Bio Alan Stewart is a Taungurung/Filipino artist based in Naarm/Melbourne. He uses photography to document his family, community, and personal journey as a First Nations person. Reflecting stories from his childhood—first in Manila, and then in Melbourne— Stewart’s pictures showcase his rich Filipino and Australian Aboriginal backgrounds. He is a photographer predominantly focusing on landscape and street photography, and has premiered work at West Space, Yirramboi, BlakHeart and PHOTO 2021. He was also the recipient of the Metro Tunnel Creative Program 2D Award at The 8th Koorie Art Show in 2021.
