Printed colour postcard titled "City Hall and Shoppers Square Ballarat". Has an inbound tram showing the Grenville St sign on the rear, and one of the crossbench cars loading passengers outside the Town Hall. Shows Snows building, people in the median strip - busy holiday or a Sunday. Images of the front and back of the card and a close-up of the two trams in the bottom left-hand corner. Note the lamp or coloured destination sign on the roof of the inbound tram. On the rear, the postcard has been divided into two with the words "Post Card" and "Printed in Great Britain" on the top, a "Valentine Series" on the side. Addressed to Miss J Johnstone, 30 Weighbridge St, Flemington, and with the words "Dear Jeannie, / How do you like this one. / Maggie". This aerial photograph depicts the changing landscape of Cheltenham and Highett since WWII. Photographed in 1945, there is a mix of urban dwellings and industrial development and precedes the major transformation of Cheltenham with the development of the Southland shopping centre in the 1960s and expansion in the 1990s.A large part of Cheltenham was originally established as a rural market gardening community. The railway line and station brought urban development to the area and in the north, the Highett area was dominated by the Highett Gas Works. Cheltenham became a major destination for shopping in the 1960s with the opening of Southland.Aerial photograph taken in 1945 of Cheltenham and Highett within the City of Kingston. The image includes the Highett Reserve, (top right), the Methodist Children Homes (now Southland), Nepean Highway and Jamieson Street. Highett Gas Works is visible in the top left and the land now named William Fry Reserve at the intersection of Bay Road and Nepean Highway. A visible large parcel of land on the corner of Bay Road and Nepean Highway was developed in the 1990s as the west side addition to Southland. The densely vegetated area in the upper right sector of the image is now dense with housing. Tulip Grove, Heather Grove and Gilford Street are visible bottom left. As tourism and car culture grew in the early and mid 20th century the need for street and touring directories grew. Bendigo's geographic location within central Victoria and relatively closeness to Melbourne meant that the district has long been an ideal car touring destination. A. E. Pritchard was a licensed surveyor with an office in Bull Street Bendigo and produced these handy bound directories which fit neatly into the car glovebox therefor serving both the local and state demand for high quality printed directories such as these. One hundred and thirty page printed and bound street and touring directory. Includes fold out reference and day touring maps, photographs of local 'beauty' spots and extensive advertising by local businesses. Heavy card used for front and back covers. Series of 15 colour route maps for various tram lines or groups of tram lines for the MMTB. Some have the Transport Information Centre telephone printed on them, others have a label stuck on. Some are finished with a plastic laminate finish on either one or both sides. Show the major cross streets, parks, schools, other tram routes, major stop numbers and railway lines. The roll is missing a top section, possibly (based on a Footscray roll held in the BTM Archives), DEPOT; WILLIAMSTOWN RD; RAILWAY STATION. SPECIAL E - thought to be for the Explosives Factory. Through running to City from May 1954 when track extended and connected to main system. Light grey card folder manufactured by the Roneo Printing Works of Rumford England with the file title "Fire Switches, glued to the top of the folder on the inside back cover. Contains many memos from the MMTB Traffic Managers, Depot Managers about the arrangements for the visit of the Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of York in April 1927. Also contains memo re cable tram arrangements for this event from Port Melbourne depot, arrangements for Christmas holidays and other holidays from about 1924 to 1944, including a map of the procession and printed programs by the Government Printer. Documents either typed or hand written.
