April Meeting (Newsletter No. 233, Apr. 2017) Our meeting at 8.00pm on Wednesday 12th April 2017 is our Annual General Meeting, which includes the presentation of annual reports and the election of office bearers for the coming year. The official notification of the Annual General Meeting and Agenda are on page 8 in this Newsletter. At this meeting we are pleased to have as our guest speaker Dr. Andrew Lemon, a great friend of EDHS and a Fellow and the immediate Past President of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria. Andrew is an independent Melbourne historian, author of numerous books on local history, shipwrecks, biography, schools and sport and winner of national literary awards. He has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of Melbourne for his published works. Andrew edited the Victorian Historical Journal throughout the 1990s and served on the Library Board of Victoria and the Heritage Council. This book was written by C. Frusher Howard in 1874 and this copy is the 1892 edition. C. Frusher Howard was the alias of Joseph Ostler (‘Frusher’ was his mother’s maiden name) and he was the first district secretary of the Moorabbin Roads Board. He absconded with its funds in 1867. After some time in the goldfields of U.S.A. and a bigamous marriage he published ‘The Art of Reckoning’ which was highly successful in Britain and U.S.A. He was able to pay back the money he had embezzled. He advertised that he was a Fellow of the Society of Science, Letters and Art, London, but this was a profit-making society owned by an individual and enabled members to wear academic dress and use the title of ‘Professor’. Ostler had in reality no academic qualifications. In the early 1890s he lectured on his ideas on mathematical calculation and publicized his four books in India, Egypt, Palestine and South Africa. In 1896 he returned to Australia and at the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition Howard gave daily lectures on mathematical calculations and illustrated these with the aid of a blackboard. The inscription in this book does not appear to have any local significance but the book is of interest because the author, C. Frusher Howard, was a lecturer at the Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition of 1896-7. This is a soft cover book of 142 pages. There are several pages at the back of the book advertising other books published by Cassell and Company. The cover is brown with an ornate border on the front cover and black printing on the front cover, spine and back cover. The lettering on the spine has been mostly worn away. The first page has a black and white sketch of the author, C. Frusher Howard, in academic dress. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. ‘C.F. This linesman belt was used under the 1947 Electricity Regulations and before tighter Occupation and Health regulations (late 1990's early 2000's) were introduced that mechanical lifting platforms(wherever possible) replaced the belt up the pole method.The safety concern was that it required that tools needed by the linesman had to be placed in a large canvas bag and attached to the belt (extra weight) then the linesman had to climb the ladder. Ladders had to be at the correct angle and not able to "slip" from their initial footings. A full harness and a secondary fall belt is now mandatory for pole linesmen. The safety of fellow workers could be compromised if they were required to assist or recover the first linesman if needed. In 2006 an additional 269 registered lineworkers were employed. Please note that the terminology of linesman has become unisex. The linesman's belt enabled the linesman to place his feet against the pole adjust the belt (if needed) and lean back securely allowing both hands to be free to work with. This linesman belt is very significant to the Kiewa Valley due to the numerous poles and high voltage overhead power structures that needed maintenance for the extensive "mushroom" installation of electrical power polls(wood and metal). On high poles (steel) climbing pegs were welded on, however in the Alpine areas snow in winter caused an OH&S problem which were hard to overcome. The safety of a linesman when maintenance of electricity line on poles can be highlighted by the New Zealand linesman who survived an 11,000 volt shock when carrying out maintenance. For the record 11,000 volts is four times more powerful than execution by "the electric chair". The maintenance of the linesman's belt was his responsibility (keeping it clean and in "good" condition). Labour laws change this initial responsibility, from the linesman, to the employer. Climbing pegs were installed on higher poles that extended beyond the reach of ladders.This thick leather linesman belt is made from two lengths of heavy lengths of leather straps sewn together to make up 80% of the belt. In 1903 he was arrested in Perth after suspicions were raised when he purchased expensive jewellery and clothes for his wife. Subsequently six thousand pounds in banknotes was found under his bed. Another fellow from his theatre group was also arrested and charged with bank robbery. Leighton was charged with receiving money knowing it was stolen. Investigations by the Perth police showed that Leighton was really Norman Campbell who had been born in Gippsland. He had worked as a clerk in the Victorian Savings Bank in Melbourne and then in the same role in the Sydney Savings Bank. During this time he had amassed large sums of money by forgery, a crime he spent seven years in prison for. He then emerged as the newly minted H. A. A brief biography on Grace Burke.A Tasmanian native, Grace had to fight to be involved in the nursing life as her father was opposed it, calling a dirty, filthy job. As luck would have it she chance on the matron of the matron of a nursing home at Lindisfare who spoke to her father, allowing her to go there to help out. She then move to Campbell Town Hospitown Hospital for nurse trainin, then Sydney for a midwifery course. When war broke out she enlisted and was posted to the Middle Eat in 1942. 1945 saw her at the army hospital in Bougainville, where she met a sick fellow Tasmanian, Raymond Burke of the 2/27th. Ray soon returned to the fighting but when the war was over he returned to Bougainville and they were married.. Grace's nursing background meant she was invited to join the the board of Mary Ogilvy Home, where she later became the matron for seventeen years until her retirement. Ref: Wikipedia Kelly's interest in Australian history clashed with his idiosyncratic sense of humour and this collision created his early Dobell's Cows series (1992–1996) based on the work of the artist Sir William Dobell. Dobell and his fellow artists were commissioned to camouflage airfields during WWII, and as part of this ruse Dobell made papier-mâché cows and scattered them around airfields to deceive the Japanese pilots – "Said Bill, I think the authorities underestimate the eyesight of the Japanese airmen". There is very little historical record that these cows actually existed although Dobell's camouflage activities at Menangle and Bankstown aerodrome are well documented in the Australian War Memorial and by the photography of Max Dupain. Dobell's cows were first exhibited at Niagara Galleries, Melbourne, in 1993. Whilst studying at the Slade, a work from this series, ‘Two men lifting a cow’ was reproduced in France on the front page of Libération. Caulking is a process used by shipwrights and other tradespeople to seal the gaps and cracks in boats and ships, buildings and plumbing fittings. It prevents water, air and pests from entering the through the gaps. The shipwright’s caulking box and a display of shipwright's tools are connected to the maritime history of Victoria through their past owner, user and donor, Laurie Dilks. Laurie began his career as a shipwright in the mid-1900s, following in the wake of the skilled carpenters who have over many centuries used their craft to build and maintain marine vessels and their fittings. Laurie worked for Ports and Harbours, Melbourne, for over 50 years, beginning in the early 1960s. He and a fellow shipwright inscribed their names on a wheelhouse they built in 1965; the inscription was discovered many decades later during a repair of the plumbing. Many decades later Laurie worked on the Yarra River moving barges up and down the river and was fondly given the title ‘Riverboat Man’ His interest in maritime history led him to volunteer with the Maritime Trust of Australia’s project to restore and preserve the historic WWII 1942 Corvette, the minesweeper HMAS Castlemaine, which is a sister ship to the HMAS Warrnambool J202.The shipwright’s caulking box containing caulking tools is an example of the equipment used by shipwrights in the early to mid-20th centuries. E Gordon Rupp, 1910-1986, was one of the leading historians of his generation, specialising in the Protestant Reformation (particularly Luther) and eighteenth-century England. After a degree in history at King’s College, London he prepared for ministry at Wesley House from 1933 to 1937. After further study in Strasbourg and Basel and a period of circuit ministry he taught at Richmond College from 1947 to 1952, when he became a lecturer in Divinity at Cambridge University, taking his Doctorate in Divinity in 1955. In 1956 he became the first Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Manchester University before moving to Wesley House as Principal in 1967. The following year he combined that appointment with the Dixie Professorship of Ecclesiastical History at Cambridge and a Fellowship at Emmanuel College. He retired from Wesley House in 1974 and from the Professorship three years later. He published extensively and was an active ecumenist, one of the founders of the Cambridge Theological Federation, a member of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches and an official Observer at the Second Vatican Council. "James Pinkerton, described by fellow settler Isaac Batey as ‘a fine old Scotish [sic] gentleman’, and his wife Margaret established ‘Chamois Ponds’ on Kororoit Creek in the Keilor district in 1840.44 After a fire in 1848, the Pinkerton family moved further west to a holding called Yaloke, on the Werribee River in the Melton district.45 Today, the Surbiton Park water treatment plant operates on part of the Yaloke run. The Pinkerton family is remembered in Melton in part due to the historic graves of the original settler, Margaret Pinkerton, and four of her grandchildren, which were marked by a memorial cairn in 1931. Changes to sewage flood zoning in the area in the 1990s necessitated that these burials be relocated. Members of the Melton & District Historical Society oversaw a project to relocate the Pinkerton graves and cairn 200 metres from their original site to their current resting place at Mount Cottrell. This relocation ceremony took place on 8 November 1992, with the participation of local school students and with Pinkerton descendants playing a central role. Loris BUTTON (27/02/1951- ) Born Melbourne Dr Loris Button grew up in Melbourne, completing undergraduate studies in painting and drawing at the Phillip Institute of Technology, followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Tasmania. Her PhD thesis employed self portraiture as a means for reflecting on the self, time and ageing in contemporary culture. From 1981 – 1986 Loris lived and studied in Hobart before returning to Melbourne. She lectured at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy from 1987. Since 1990 she has lived and worked in Ballarat and the nearby town of Creswick. Loris retired from an academic career at the Arts Academy, University of Ballarat (now Federation University) at the end of 2010. Loris has continued a post-retirement association with the Arts Academy through her role as an Honorary Research Fellow. Working with prints, paintings and drawings on handmade paper, her work is regularly shown in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas. Macnab was the minister of St Michael's Uniting Church (formerly Collins Street Independent Church) from 1971 to 2016. Macnab was born to J. D. Macnab and Mary Anne Louisa Hughes on 21 June 1931. Russell Mockridge b1928 d1958 was described 'as the greatest cyclist of all time'. He died during a race in collision with a bus that also claimed the lives of two fellow riders and a spectator. Mockridge started in 1946 by winning his first race of 40km with the Geelong Amateur Cycling Club. His wins soon earned him the nickname of the Geelong Flyer. He represented Australia at the London Olympic Games in 1948 and the Helsinki Games in 1952. He also represented Australia in the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland where he took gold in the 1000 sprint and the 1000m time trial and silver in the 4000m pursuit. In Paris 1952 he won the Amateur Grand Prix and the following day the Open Grand Prix, beating world professional champion Reg Harris. Later that year he won Manchester Wheelers Club Muratti Cup again beating Reg Harris. He turned professional a year later and teamed with Sid Patterson and Roger Arnold to win the Paris 6 day race in 1955. Mockridge was one of 60 of 150 entrants to finish the 1955 Tour de France. He won 12 consecutive Australian championships. Mockridge was married and had a daughter, Melinda (1955)Russell Mockridge was described 'as the greatest cyclist of all time'. He also worked in advertising as an account manager, and as campaign director for Arthur Rylah in Victorian politics. He directed the first major trade fairs at the Royal Exhibition Buildings after the Second World War, including ‘Australia Makes It Exhibition’ in 1947, the ‘Australian Industrial Fair’ in 1949 and 1950, the ‘Modern Home Exhibition’ in 1949, and ‘Made in Australia’ in 1952. The funds raised during the latter were earmarked for a ‘bankrupt’ Queen Victoria Hospital. He built a home in Brougham Street and represented North Ward on Kew Council from 1952 to 1968. He was elected Mayor in 1959. Hugh Ferguson died in 1975, aged 75. At various stages, he also acted as an insurance, postal and real estate agent. He lived in Walpole Street and later at Lota Begg (now demolished) in Westbrook Street, East Kew. In 1884, Henry Kellett was elected to the Kew Borough Council and served for 40 years; a remarkable example of public service. He was elected Mayor for a single term in 1888-9. Sir Henry de Castres Kellett died in St George’s Hospital in 1924 following a tragic car accident in Cotham Road, Kew while on Council business.
