As well as being an artist of considerable talent—even genius (she had been a favourite pupil of the water-colourist John Varley), Georgiana had been an indefatigable diarist since she was a little girl; and to this cultivated and therefore perhaps lonely young woman in the embryo town that was Melbourne her journal was her confidant and companion. Children's picture book that belonged to Phyllis Annie Diggins (nee Anderson). Phyllis and her sister Jessie Alexandra Diggins (nee Anderson) were sisters born in Bendigo. This book was donated by the son of Jessie Diggins. After leaving Bendigo the family lived in Kew. The sisters later married brothers - Joseph Diggins (Phyllis) and Victor Edgar Diggins ((Jessie). For many years the families returned to Bendigo to attend the Easter Fair, staying at the Shamrock Hotel. Phyllis was born 10.9.1908 and died 6.11.2004."Our Little Ones ABC". Ann Dale (nee Lees) was given this frame by her younger brother Thomas Chamberlain Lees, who was eighteen at that time. Thomas was the youngest son and seventh child of Lees and Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees. Ann loved her little brother’s artistic talents, which are demonstrated in this frame he designed and carefully carved for her. Thomas had cleverly finished the back with timber pieces around the images, and a section of a 1904 calendar. His “GOOD LUCK” is below the image of Ann, her husband Ellis Dale and their five children, c 1900. Sadly, Thomas died in 1911, aged 25. Ellis Dale’s father, William, was a quarryman who sailed from Yorkshire to Australia in 1852. He later bought land for Dale’s Quarries on the edge of Warrnambool in the area of Dale and Aberline roads. From the age of about eleven, Ellis and his brother worked in the quarry beside their father. In 1890 Ellis Dale married Ann Lees. Ann had lived nearby at Wangoom with her parents, Lees and Sarah Lees, who had had her photograph taken when she was a little girl, wearing her black dress. Ellis built a bluestone cottage for himself and Ann on his father’s land in Dales Road. He later added weatherboard rooms, and they named their finished home “Latrigg”. Early in their marriage Ellis recycled some empty dynamite boxes from their quarry to build a cupboard with drawers for Ann’s flat irons and other ironing equipment. The cupboard was used by future generations until recently, when Ann’s granddaughter, Betty Stone, donated it as part of the Chamberlain Dale Lees Collection. The two little girls are Regina (Nina) and Marguerita (Rita) Black, daughters of Constantine and Toula Mavrokefalou (Black). They had three other siblings - John, Elly and Olga. Their parents were early immigrants to Australia and in the 1910s Constantine opened the Paris Residential Cafe at 54-56 Swantson Street, Melbourne. Nina was passionate about fostering Greek culture and language within the Ithacan, Greek and wider Australian community in Melbourne and was very active in a variety of Greek community activities, including the performing arts and education.Photograph of a black and white photo of two little girls. This is a family photograph of Spiros Raftopoulos (Levendi), his wife Hariklia and sons Stathi and Naki, and daughter, Apostolo (Loula). The photograph was taken about circa 1937, four years after the family arrived in Australia (1934) and settled in Merbein . Spiro had been to Australia earlier in 1922; his brothers John and Efthimio Raftopoulos (Fiakas) were were well established with businesses in Mildura and surrounding towns.A laminated copy of a family group studio photograph. John Black pictured as a young child, was the only son of Constantine and Efstathia Black (Mavrokefalos). John's parents came to Australia in the early 1900s. They owned and operated the Paris Residential Cafe at 56 Swanston Street in the second decade of the 20th century. John is the brother of Olga and Nina Black, both of whom were very active in Ithacan and Greek community cultural life. The photograph features Anastasios Vlassopoulos (Kioukiouris) with his three daughters-in-law, Ekaterini, Korina and Elena, and three little grandsons. They are from L-R: Ekaterina (nee Paxinos), Korina (nee Raftopoulos), John, Anastasios, baby Aleko held by his grandfather Anastasios, Elena (nee Raftopoulos) and Peter. The photograph was taken in the village of Lahos shortly before Ekaterina and son Peter emigrated to Australia to be reunited with her husband, John. Elena remained in Ithaca, as did Korina whose son Aleko Vlassopoulos migrated to Australia following World War 2. Ithacan migration to Australia before World War 2 was unassisted. Generally it followed a pattern of chain migration with family members following one another. The men arrived first with the intention of either returning or saving enough money to bring their wives and families out when they had become financially established. Most men did not return. Toula Black (Mavrokefalou) is seated with her 2 year old daughter Rita on her knee. Her older daughter, Nina, is crouched down beside her. Toula's brother, John Raftopoulos, is standing behind them. The photograph was taken in the family home of Constantine and Toula Black (Mavrokefalos) in Parkville during the early 1920s on the christening day of their son John Black. John's sisters, six year of Nina Black and her four year old sister, Rita (Marguerita) are pictured. Also pictured from l-r: Argiro ? , who was from Adelaide; John (Panoyoti) Raftopoulos, Toula's brother; and Lily Sigalas, Greek school teacher. Lily was the sister of Alexandra Vrachna who taught two generations of Australian born Ithacan children in Greek community schools for close to 30 years.In adult life Nina Black also went on to teach Greek at the Greek Community school which opened in Melbourne in the early 1930s. An early black and white postcard from Keppel's Hotel in Marysville. The hotel was originally built and opened by the Keppel Family in 1865. The Keppel's Australian Hotel was the first hotel to be opened in Marysville. The Keppel Family were among Marysville's earliest pioneering families. On the reverse of the postcard is a hand written message and a postage stamp.
