An early example of Melbourne Legacy Club newsletter (No. 265 16/2/1932), covering the activities of Melbourne Legacy Club. Information includes speakers for the weekly Tuesday meetings, the opening of the new Club Rooms at 55 Market Street by the Lord Mayor, personal news of Legatees, and a considerable amount of space devoted to job placement for Junior Legatees, which was proving problematic for boys over 17 years of age. There is also a report by the Chairman of Committees on the activities of the Club, news from other clubs, and a clothing appeal. The overall tone is chatty but informative and the dedication to the welfare of Junior Legatees is obvious. It also announced the formation of the Intermediate Legacy Ladies Club. They had held a fete to raise money. They met on the third Wednesday each month. A newsletter from Sydney Legacy with six real life examples of the types of people Legacy help and what they have been able to achieve. It appears to have been published approximately 1990. Types of help given by Legatees included helping a widow's daughter buy her first car, providing a widow with a unit in the Legacy flats at Edgley Court, Petersham, providing allowance for text books for further study, also helping a disabled dependent swim in the Olympic Games also a Legacy holiday home for the widows to use. One widow talks about the widows' club and that 'you're never lonely. The Melbourne Legacy created a widows' visiting group in 1981. Called the "Home and Hospital Visiting Programme". The visiting group was formed of widows who would visit women in hospital or their homes or nursing homes. This photo shows Joyce Coomer (left) and Kath Silvers (right) of Coburg widows' Club enjoying a cuppa with Eileen Moore in her home.The article mentioned 'many find it easier to discuss personal concerns with another woman and Legatees recognise this.' These photos are of widows visiting another widows and were featured in newsletters to inform widows of the existence of the group and that there were always friendly faces that could provide a comfort to widows in isolation. Copies of newsletters to Legacy widows in 1960s. There were usually 4 or 5 editions per year. Newsletters include a notice from the Senior Widows Club coordinator F R G Strickland and information about events and meetings. The editor was Mrs B E Shephard. There were so many widows that the meetings had to be held at the Melbourne Town Hall to accomodate the numbers. November's meeting as a picnic in the Botanical Gardens and January the widows met in Fitzroy Gardens. In November there were calls for nominations for the committee members for the following year. Committee comprised of a President, 2 Vice presidents, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, Hon. Assistant Secretary and 14 members of the committee. The first edition in the new format was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. The newsletter was priced at 1D a copy. Various pages of interest have been added to show different news items. The newsletter from December 1958. The cover featured Mr Geoffrey Armstrong making a donation to President Rob Allison. The president's page featured a photo of office staff on the phones during Legacy Week and promoted the Christmas party. There were articles from the boys classes, including a photo of Ron Barassi playing basketball with the South Melbourne class. There was an article profiling Legatee Norman Harris and his achievements. An article about the Girls classes showed there number of classes was increasing - with new Tuesday night classes. Plus Miss Domec Carre was full time, after 23 years part-time as she was giving up her other work commitments. The ILC was recruiting new members. On page 7 there were updates from the Residences with numbers of children in each house mentioned as well as many of the past residents' names. Photos of the demonstrations were published as well. The newsletter from December 1952. It featured the Governor of Victoria Sir Dallas Brookes on the cover. There was an article about the 1952 Demonstration including 4 photos. There had been a scene with Father Christmas called 'Toymaker's dream' with toy soldiers, dancing dolls, Chinese dolls with shiny hats and golliwogs. Other items included 'Totem Tom Tom' with the senior girls dress as native American maidens. They also performed 'Good Queen Bess' in elaborate costumes with Linda Bulllivant playing the lead. Also the fantasy on the Grieg Concerto, which was a graceful ballet. Juniors and intermediates provided 'Anchors aweigh' with 'mopping the decks,' and 'flag dance' with each girl holding two Union Jacks. With figure marching and Sailors' Hornpipe as well. Some appeared in the newsletter in March 1992. The article mentions that the annual camps run for two weeks at Somers Camp (believed to be Somers School Camp). It is a wonderful gathering of Junior Legatees, Legatees, and dedicated helpers. 50 Legatees attended this camp with the personal attention almost one-to-one. With ages ranging from 22 to into the 60s, Legacy has to ensure it caters for the differing needs. Legatees headed by Camp Chief, Jim Hammon and Chairman of the Handicapped Dependents Committee, Merv Tickell, were supported by two Camp Co-Ordinators and 50 helpers known as 'leaders'. Many of the leaders are people in the workforce wishing to give something back to the community. Junior Legatees are organised into groups. They participate in horse-riding, swimming, golfing, strawberry picking, and many other activities. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents are invited to go on outings or take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aim to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions.
