Graeme DRENDEL (1953- ) Born Ouyen, Victoria Graeme Drendel is a key Australian figurative painter and printmaker who believes you should paint what you know. He studied Art Teaching at the Ballarat Teacher' College and Ballarat School of Mines in 1971 and 1972 before completing a Diploma of Teaching Art and Craft at Melbourne State College in 1974. While studying in Ballarat Graeme lived in the student hostel 'Beaufort House'. After teaching for several years, Graeme undertook a life changing and extensive travelling tour throughout Italy, United Kingdom and United States at which time he decided he would always depict the human figure. Recognised for his intelligent observations of the human condition, Graeme’s art invites contemplation and reveals the humour of everyday life. The isolation he portrays through his characters may relate back to the isolation he felt on the wheat farm he grew up on. As a prolific user of sketchbooks Graeme Drendel records close observations, which can inform his paintings. Graeme Drendel is regularly a finalist in the Archibald Portrait Prize, Sulman Prize, Paul Guest Prize and in 2022 he won the prestigious Doug Moran National Portrait Prize with his portrait of fellow artist Lewis Miller. HGC Championship Cup 1941, won by E. O. (Eric) McCutchan. Eric was an administrator with the VFL commencing in 1932, he gave 44 years' service to the league. From 1945 to 1955 he was Assistant Secretary of the VFL, and from 1956 to 1965 he was Secretary. He was Administrative Director from 1966 to 1976. Surrey Hills Mounted Police Station was located at 5 Suffolk Road (dem.) from 1889-1914. It was a police residence with two rooms as the police office and workshop. There were stables on the back fence. The property adjoined Wyclif Church in Norfolk Road. Gilbert McCallum rented from c.1914-1923 when he built a home in Westminster Street. It is his son Archie who can just be seen on the front steps. Archie remembers the 2 storied stables with a gantry for hauling feed sacks up with a block and tackle, then a polished wood slide to send the feed down. The McCallum children and local friends found this to be a marvellous slide. David McPhie, ex-police force, lived here with his family from 1923-c.1950. Two up has been played by Australians since 1850's. It was popular during WWI, during which time the soldiers referred to the game as SWY (which came from the German Zwei which is the word for two.) It's popularity continued through WWII and the BCOF constantly ran "SWY" schools. The game is now only legal to be played on Anzac day in Victoria, but in other states also on remembrance day.
