Possibly, the photo was taken prior to the introduction of through routing of trams introduced in August 1937 when trams no longer terminated in the City at Grenville St but ran through the city to another terminus. W2 510, (City) is fitted with a route number box, while W2 549 (Mont Albert) is not fitted. Both trams have auxiliary destinations boards hanging from the driver's cabins. The ornate centre poles are shown. Though the inscription date is 1930 when route numbers were being rolled out for Melbourne's trams. Used by the MMTB in an attempt to keep tram tracks clear of motor cars. It seldom worked. Signs would have been fixed to the ends of a tram so it could be seen by motorists.
