Given the tram number and the crowd, most likely the last tram from Lydiard St North to the depot. Tram 42 was recorded as the last to leave Lydiard St North on 19/9/1971. In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Sandhurst and Electric Tramways Company introduced the first trams to Bendigo in June 1890. These were battery operated trams but it soon became obvious that the battery life was unable to copy with Bendigo's hilly terrain. The trams were converted to steam in 1892. In 1899 the tramways were sold to the Electric Supply Company of Victoria and in 1903 the trams were converted to electricity. After WW1 the SEC was formed and took over the running of the trams. With the increased usage of cars, patronage of the trams began to drop off after WW2. In 1972 the tramways closed as a commuter service. The Bendigo trust then restored trams and infrastructure and began the tourist/talking trams.State Electricity Commission of Victoria Provincial Tramways: student passes One box containing various types of tram tickets. Provides a list of active Ballarat trams operated by the State Electricity Commission of Vic, dated 7-11-1967. Notes that there are 15 ST's (Single trucks or four wheel trams) and 10 bogies - all larger trams. Also records that all destination rolls were black on white, changed over from white letters on a black background.
